[HOT] From osmf-talk: "Balancing the presence of the Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team (HOT US Inc) in the OpenStreetMap Foundation"

2015-11-24 Thread nicolas chavent
Hi all,

Apologies for crosspostings, resending to talk an email sent to
osmf-talk about the HOT US Inc presence at the Board of the OSMF.

Best,
Nicolas

Dear OSMF voting members and mappers,

This short note (also published in my diary [1]) to draw your
attention on the danger for OSMF (and the OSM project) in the case the
United States NGO "Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team US Inc" (aka HOT US
Inc) got a majority at the OSMF Board after this 2015 election.

Mikel Maron, Joseph Reeves and Yantisa Akhadi, all members of the NGO
HOT US Inc, are running for the OSMF Board [2]; Kate Chapman, the
former ED of HOT US Inc serves already as Board Officer in OSMF.

Shall Mikel Maron, Joseph Reeves and Yantisa Akhadi be elected, HOT US
Inc will get a majority at the Board of the Foundation.
This will provide a single organization of the OSM ecosystem (HOT US
Inc) with an unprecedented and excessive power of influence over the
Foundation.

This running of three candidates from the same organization is
puzzling and troublesome when one considers that HOT US Inc (and
therefore its perspective around OpenStreetMap) is already represented
at the OSMF Board since Sept 2013. Why extending its presence and
influence and consequently diminishing the OSM diversity represented
at the OSMF Board?

A greater HOT US Inc presence at the OSMF Board would be a matter of
concern in terms of :
- balance of powers
- diversity of visions, thoughts and practices around OSM
- board dynamics: a collective of HOT US Inc Boardees would interact
with single individuals.
This is a bad practice which is not followed by any Organizations;
this is specifically true for representative bodies (organization
representing organizations) such as OSMF

Here are some elements that OSMF voting members shall have in ming
prior casting their ballot 28-Nov onwards bearing in minds that HOT US
Inc and this perspective about OSM is already represented at the OSMF
Board through Kate Chapman.

The HOT US Inc perspective informs, like other perspectives, the work
of the Foundation and has its effect on the OSM project, there is no
need to take risks in providing this group with more room in the
Foundation which is hot enough in these times of winter.

Best,
Nicolas

[HOT] I'm running for the OSMF Board

2015-11-24 Thread Joseph Reeves
Dear all,

Apologies to those on the Members' list, I'm spamming you with this for the
second time. I sent this note to Members yesterday and it was suggested I
send to the wider HOT community as well.

Feedback would be great, and I'd also add that OSMF membership is something
that should really be given some thought if you're a keen OSM user:

I've put myself forward as a candidate for the next OpenStreetMap
Foundation Board:

https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Foundation/AGM15/Election_to_Board

I strongly believe that HOT is a important and valuable member of the wider
OSM community, and that we also have a perspective on OSM that may be very
different from some other people's. I think that the OSMF could potentially
learn a great deal from HOT; we're a small group, but an incredibly diverse
mix of people that generate some fantastic results.

My question to you all, therefore, is does our HOT perspective raise
questions or concerns that may be missing from the current OSMF discourse?
Can you share an insight into the running of smaller communities that are
culturally, and physically, separated from the UK based OSMF? Does saving
lives with OpenStreetMap give a different perspective on how the wider
organisation should be run?

I'd really like to hear from fellow members on this topic, and there's also
a space for questions on the wiki if you'd like to contact all candidates
via that means:

https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Talk:Foundation/AGM15/Election_to_Board

I'm not the only HOTie running for a place, so I think this is a great time
for some of our potentially under-represented voices to be heard.

Cheers, Joseph

Re: [HOT] Be part of a global mapping event for disability rights

2015-11-24 Thread Katja Ulbert

Thanks Lisa!

I was about to introduce the HOT community to this fantastic mapping
project myself, so I am happy to see you reaching out. I know the work
of SOZIALHELDEN and appreciate very much what they have done in the
previous years. I know thatWheelmap.org is a
useful tool to allow people with mobility impairments to participate
actively in local communities. At the same time it raises awareness to
the rights and needs of persons with disabilities.

So on Dec 3rd I will support the #mapmyday campaign by mapping in my
neighbourhood and by spreading the word in social networks, it would be
awesome if some HOT community members would like to get active on this
day as well.

Dear hot team,

We invite you to join a worldwide mapping event to raise awareness for
disability rights and accessibility. Information on the wheelchair
accessibility of public places is often scarce or hard to find, making
it very difficult for people with mobility impairments to participate
in our communities. That is why the German NGO Sozialhelden (‘Social
Heroes’), the World Health Organization (WHO) and the ITU are
launching the campaign “MapMyDay”, which will begin on December 3, the
International Day of Persons with Disabilities.

During the campaign, people around the world will be marking the
accessibility of public places such as stores, restaurants, train
stations and government buildingson Wheelmap.org, a free online map
which is also the world’s largest database for wheelchair accessible
places. If many people in many places around the world contribute
information to Wheelmap and if new conversations about accessibility
are started along the way, this campaign will be a great success.

That is where your organization comes in: Will you please spread the
word about this campaign in your mapping community, your friends and
networks and help us make this campaign a smashing success?

I have attached two sheets to this email, one with general background
information on the “MapMyDay” campaign and one with concrete ideas on
how yourmapping community can get involved. You can show your support
with something as simple as retweeting our #MapMyDay posts - all the
way to organizing a mapping event with your friends and network.
