[HOT] AWG Meeting Summary | 6th September 2016

2016-09-06 Thread Mhairi O'Hara
Hello HOTties,

So we didn't run the meetbot during yesterdays meeting, because I thought
it was only Russell and myself that were attending, but luckily Blake,
Mikel and Cristiano showed up and some great ideas were discussed:

   - Have new students signup to the Activation curriculum course via a
   Google Form
   - Each new student will be buddied up with an Activation mentor to guide
them and show them the ropes
   - Migrate the Activation course content from Moodle to GitBooks which is
more user friendly and easier to maintain
   - Arrange an Activation sprint during the Summit/SOTM to move the
content and get input from the community
   - Move Activation WG meetings to the 1st Wednesday of each month at 1400
UTC (next meeting will be on the 5th October 2016)

Unfortunately I won't be attending the events at the end of the month in
Brussels, so I leave it up to the other four to coordinate the best time
and see it through. Please use the following Google Doc to get yourselves
started:

https://docs.google.com/a/hotosm.org/document/d/1Frg8CYCPB12YUjeljK8E0sHv81UM7EPDkBrlXIYPIyg/edit?usp=sharing

Kind regards,

Dan,

Thanks! I followed Ben's advice and made a pull request on the Github

Re: [HOT] Hurricane Newton- Hitting today in Mexico (Baja California Sur and Sonora)

2016-09-06 Thread Andrew Buck
The linked task covers an enormous area, not only are the task squares
themselves very big but the bounds of the entire task are quite large as
well. It is not going to be possible to do meaningful map coverage over
such a large area in the time in which the data would be relevant to
first responders.

Therefore we will need to focus the efforts to a smaller region to have
a more concentrated mapping effort. According to the most recent
WunderGround blog the eye of the storm passed over the city of Cabo San
Lucas, this seems like a reasonable place to start the efforts unless
someone has a better suggestion.

Secondly, does anyone have contacts with ground personnel who might be
responding? I know we have some contact with the Mexican government
after the previous hurricane response there, have they asked us for
anything specific?

Fortunately the damage does not seem too severe from initial reports but
it may be worth doing some mapping in the more affected areas if people
are interested.

[HOT] Hurricane Newton- Hitting today in Mexico (Baja California Sur and Sonora)

2016-09-06 Thread Miriam Mapanauta
Hi Hot team

Hurricane Newton is hitting Baja California Sur and the state of Sonora.
Besides the harm that a hurricane can cause there are big risks of flooding
in different areas.

A colleague in the OpenStreetMap community in Mexico, Alberto Chung (cc)
reacted in advance and prepared the following Task to start mapping the
area. Please find the task below.

Re: [HOT] HOT Working Groups (was Myanmar task on MapSwipe)

2016-09-06 Thread Laura O'Grady
Hi all,

Here's the direct link to the application form:

https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSc3AdsVEHI2sP7o2U4zRlL8i9oSMZ7CUvk9TnHoct33yDLyBw/viewform?c=0=1

I've done a quick read through. It doesn't seem very onerous, especially if
there's a reasonably thought out idea that fits the funding call.

Best wishes,

Thanks Melanie - I'll follow-up directly with you next.

In the meantime, I'll hijack this thread to let everyone know - yes, we have a
handful of working groups and new people are more than welcome to jump right
in; the groups I participate in all have a 'standing list' of stuff we'd like
to do but just not enough time/people. The groups can be found here:
https://hotosm.org/working-groups - each group picks their own forum, frequency
of meetings, etc. and only Community and Security are 'inactive' but it's our
hope to have a 'chair' for all groups by end-of-year (at least that was my
choice for accomplishable goal in 2016). There is also this calendar:

[HOT] Intro to JOSM, JOSM for iD users YouTube vids

2016-09-06 Thread Blake Girardot
Dear Friends,

If you like mapping, you owe it to yourself to try out the JOSM
desktop application for OSM mapping.

It has some advantages over the OSM iD web browser based editor, but
it is a little more complicated to use.

I made a series of very informal, one take, no script, no editing,
videos that hopefully serve as a gentle introduction to JOSM.

https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL54o5PaKgnbKU-vXe11cSmmsxIYnL5oDU

Please forgive the informal, unpolished nature of the videos, if I had
to make sure they were of the same high quality that Andrew makes I
would never get them done :) Feedback welcome of course and feel free
to leave comments on the videos as well if you want to ask questions
or leave tips for others.

You can download and install JOSM from here:

https://josm.openstreetmap.de/

I usually just use the windows installer when I am installing on a
windows machine and do not suggest the jnlp method of installing JOSM.
For the most part, if you have Java already installed, JOSM installs
very easily and you can just accept the defaults and go ahead and
update the plugin list on first launch. One of the videos in the
playlist above shows how to set the preferences for JOSM that you
need.

If you need to install Java, the process should start the first time
you try and run JOSM. Go through the Java install process slowly and
make sure Java does not try and install the "Ask Toolbar" or change
your browser settings.

Anyway, if you like humanitarian mapping, it is totally worth it to
start using JOSM. I am happy to help anyone learn to use JOSM via an
interactive web session if you want some "virtual hands on" training,
just email me directly.

Cheers,
Blake

2016-09-06 Thread Russell Deffner
Hi Laura and all,

That is a pretty tight window for the QGIS grant, however I went ahead and
added it to the Fundraising Working Group’s ‘pipeline’/spreadsheet. We meet
every-other week, next one is Wednesday the 14th; however, we have some
projects that are also time sensitive and we may do a ‘less formal’ FWG meeting
this week.

If you’re interested in this stuff, we definitely welcome more people (i.e.
more people == more opportunities we can apply for). Let me, Tyler or Cheryl
know and we can get you into the mailing list, etc.

Sincerely,

Hi Pete,

Thanks for sharing this data in QGIS format with the list. I look forward to
taking a closer look.

Speaking of QGIS they currently have a grant application call (due date
Thursday September 15th, 2016):

http://blog.qgis.org/2016/08/04/qgis-grants-call-for-applications/

I noticed one of the potential projects they might fund is:

·Implementing a new feature in QGIS

If there are any developers out there who have ideas about a plug-in that might
be used in conjunction with the Tasking Manager and/or MapSwipe that HOT would
find useful I'd be happy to read over and provide feedback on a grant proposal
for this funding call. I have experience writing/reviewing grants with some
technological aspect but not specifically with this organization.

Best wishes,
