2017-02-04 Thread Ahasanul Hoque
Thank you Rebecca. Since we the Bangladesh OSM community doesn't have any
formal registration, we are suggesting the University chapters to apply for
the micro grants since each chapters have a structured committee with
adviser from the institution. I can say that HOT gonna get 3/4 micro-grant
application from OSMBD community.

We hope and believe that few awardees of this program will be from
Bangladesh.

opening after clicking. Finally we gave up and did the editing using iD.
Still much eager to know the solution. Please share if you get any.

Fyi, we were working on the missingMaps project #1391

Thanks

Re: [HOT] New member

2016-01-16 Thread Ahasanul Hoque
Hi Annie,
Welcome to HOT. Glad to know your background and interest. OpenStreetMap(OSM)
<http://www.openstreetmap.org/about>is an ongoing project to map the world
and the worldwide volunteers are always working to improve the map. OSM
gained publicity as a disaster response aid in 2010 after the Haiti
earthquake and the non profit Humanitarian OSM Team
<http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Humanitarian_OSM_Team> was formed. You
are welcome to contribute to the HOT mission via Tasking Manager
<http://tasks.hotosm.org/>. You can know more about HOT here
<https://hotosm.org/about> and learn the OSM by following the easy tutorial
given in learnsom <http://learnosm.org/en/>. Feel free to ask by hot
mail-list if you face any difficulties in this regard.

Happy mapping !!

Best regards

Ahasan

Re: [HOT] Tom Taylor passed away Dec. 24th, 2015 - Goodbye Tom

2015-12-28 Thread Ahasanul Hoque
Dear Tom’s family,

I am so sorry to hear of Tom's death and we, the Bangladesh OpenstreetMap
community want to express our most sincere sympathies to the family during
this difficult time. Tom was a highly valuable and respected member of our
great and dynamic global community of HOT and OSM and the effects of his
passing are already being felt the community.

I knew from Tom’s profile that he started osm with geocaching. What a bold
career and life he lived!! No obstacles stopped him in his journey for
contributing to humanity. From some HOT members I also have known that he
made many great contributions to the OSM and humanitarian field. He was
chair of LearnOSM working group. He told in his user’s profile “*Possibly I
can do some mapping while I'm away*”. We wish Tom will always be mapping in
heaven too. His work here will not soon be forgotten.

Tom will be greatly missed by HOT community and everyone here in Bangladesh
community is saddened by his death. Know that our thoughts and prayers are
with Tom and his family and friends during this difficult time.

With sincere sympathy,

Ahasan

[HOT] OSGeo Bangladesh

2015-11-08 Thread Ahasanul Hoque
Hi,
Through the mail from Kate we got informed that OSGeo has started a new
committee to build a closer relationship with the UN to encourage use of
open-source geospatial software. Then I thought, I should also share that
in Bangladesh there is a OSGeo community group has been formed in last 17
October, 2015 and the first meeting was held at World Bank office Dhaka.

16 participants representing Geospatial, IT and programming professionals
discussed about potentialities, road map of OSGeo in Bangladesh and a
demonestration of open data handling by Django using python. The 3 hours
meeting ended with the decision to enrich the participants in different
geospatial technologies and geospatial languages in a collaborative manner
among themselves followed by launching new projects in near future.
Opensource Geospatial specialist* Ariel Nunez, from GFDRR-World Bank*,
Washington DC presented the potentiality of OSGeo to the interested
participants with openstreetmap data extraction and management examples.

Best regards

Re: [HOT] Adding a disaster layer to openstreetmap

2015-11-05 Thread Ahasanul Hoque
Hi Rieger,
If I understand well your query then it is easy. What format disaster data
you have ? If it is GIS format then you can download the OSM layer as base
in ArcGIS 10-10.3 all versions. You can show that also in QGIS by using
Openlayer tool to download the OSM data.

Thanks and regards

Re: [HOT] Follow up on Academic Research Discussion from the HOT Summit

2015-11-02 Thread Ahasanul Hoque
Hi Robert,
This is great. I have been encouraging the students to do their research
about OSM /HOT data for long. Now some university and students are showing
their interest to see the growing nature of OSM and HOT in Bangladesh. Some
students already asked me for some possible research ideas, I have given
them some what I already added in your docs. I shared the docs with them
too. Lets see what they choose and write in proposal. I shall share you the
update and connect them with you too.

Thanks for the initiative.

Re: [HOT] Suggestion needed for designing an OSM based project

2015-10-28 Thread Ahasanul Hoque
Thanks to all for your support and suggestion.
Thanks Dale, I shall contact with cate before that I just wanted to some
example if they exist.
Thanks Blake, I also believe that OSM defers to local insights and
understanding of what works best for the local community and its not
important whether the project is humanitarian or not, the matter is how to
look at it. The land is government owned free land what were distributed to
the poor landless community but now illegally captured and encroached by
some people. that is why the organization wants to keep the data in open
platform where the community can share the status of the parcels. The
project areas areas are lying in food vulnerable zone of Jamalpur district.

Hi Marc,
Thanks for your reply. No I havnt contacted with cadasta but i will do that
soon. Interesting to see the link you shared and thakks for your
understanding the project that I told in my mail. You are right, its not
important whether the project is humanitarian or not, the matter is how to
look at it. The land is government owned free land what were distributed to
the poor landless people but now illegally captured and encroached by some
people. that is why the organization wants to keep the data in open
platform where the community can share the status of the parcels. I also
agree with you that this is a data preparedness too for any type of
emergencies since the areas are lying in food vulnerable zone of Jamalpur
district.

[HOT] Suggestion needed for designing an OSM based project

2015-10-26 Thread Ahasanul Hoque
Hello,
Take greetings from Dhaka Bangladesh. I need a help to design an OSM based
project. An organization is thinking to digitalise some of their project
land areas, keep them on open platform and get regular update on the
tenure, rearrangement of allocation/splitting of the parcels, feature
change status regularly. But the land parcel's measurement is a vital, it
should have inch level accuracy. Also, they are thinking to get all the
updates through a mobile app from field.

I found a strong potentiality of this idea with OSM . Now wondering, do
anyone know any example or similar type project what was/were based on OSM
? it will be great help for designing the project as well as for spreading
OSM in Bangladesh if you kindly share the links, report, experience alike.
You are also welcome to put your valuable suggestion in regards.

Thanks and Regards

Re: [HOT] Mobile Offline Data Collection Project

2015-08-02 Thread Ahasanul Hoque
Dear Ragi,
I just saw the list of feature included in your app, It gonna be a great
app. We have used ODK before and recently OpenMapKit developed by American
Red Cross which are also good offline data collection app.
https://github.com/AmericanRedCross/OpenMapKit . Are these all features you
included in your mail support offline ? Have you tested this app for doing
any mapping ?

Thanks for you great effort. Keep the good work up.

Best regards

I went for a recoinnesasance survey yesterday for piloting the household

to make field paper of that pace but showing total bank. Surprisingly, in
iD, and JOSM showing the same. There is no tile in that zoom level

Can anyone please suggest how I can make the field paper of this place ?

[HOT] Suggestion needed: Household level OSM in Bangladesh

2015-03-07 Thread Ahasanul Hoque
Hello dear Mappers,
Hope you all are doing great. I need a kind suggestion from you guyz.

Last week I facilitated a OSM training at Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics
(BBS) which is the is the only national Statistical institution responsible
for collecting, compiling and disseminating statistical data of all the
sectors of the Bangladesh economy to meet and provide the data-needs of the
users and other stake holders like national level planners and other
agencies of the Govt. Under the auspices of the computer wing of BBS, a
development project entitled *"Strengthening Capacity of BBS in Population
and Demographic Data Collection Using GIS"* is being implemented. The
objective is to prepare digital enumeration area maps for conducting
various censuses and surveys, aiming to reduce non-sampling errors.

I introduced them with OSM, now they want to do a piloting. In that case
some issues arise like, *How should the House/building draw: rectangle or
as a point ? *since, In JOSM based task mapping each households mapping is
difficult.and during field paper mapping to draw the exact shape is
difficult. That is why people are suggesting to map the households as point
not rectangle.

Would you please suggest me *what should I do in this case from their
experience (if have) ? It is very important for OSM, if we can make it
successful then whole Bangladesh will be mapped in future by BBS.*

Thanks in Advance.

Many thanks Pierre and Pete for your helpful suggestions. Much appreciated.
We already started to draw the features using JOSM as much as possible. I
would follow that methods used in Kamrangir char in last Missing Maps
Project. Trying to collect some more GPS/androids. Lets see.

*Would I get support from HOT (as in Kamrangir Char of Missing maps
Project) to upload all the road and major features what will be collected
initially by 1/2 GPS holder to track all possible roads and features ?*

Kind regards

[HOT] Need Suggestions: Union Mapping

2015-02-09 Thread Ahasanul Hoque
Dear Jorieke/ Pete and all,
Hope you are fine. I would like to inform you that we (WSP-World Bank)
collaboration with CARE Bangladesh has intended to map (house hold level)
an union of Nilphamari District named Botlagari starting from end of this
month. Though in the OSM data this remote area almost blank. Do you have
any suggestion what might help me to finish this union in a easiest way ?.
FYI, this union have almos 9000 households. We will have 16 trained local
mappers and we have 3 androids and 1 GPS. Looking for your urgent
suggestions:

Please see the union in below umap link:

Re: [HOT] [Talk-bd] OSM for mitigation project

2015-02-02 Thread Ahasanul Hoque
Dear Frederic,
Think you already have got my reply of your earlier mail ccd with viven and
steven.
As I told in earlier mail that since 2014 jan there is restriction on
flying drone without permission. One of my Japanese researches group (cc)
have done almost same study as you in Jamalpur district in 2013. It was an
ADB funded Govt (Bangladesh Water Development Board) project. I think you
could get the permission through BWDB or DDM.

I have read your methodology used in Haiti and like the PGIS approach, it
can give an accurate data set. Wondered to see that you are using NIR
camera and NDVI data also what was not used in Haiti. Waiting to see its
use. It will be an interesting study for me. Some tools are not familiar to
me like Orfeo-toolbox and Pix4D.

See you in April.

Best regards

2015-01-31 Thread Ahasanul Hoque
Hi Stace,
Glad to meet you. I am Ahasan from Dhaka Bangladesh, I am here expanding
the OSM in Bangladesh and trying to build up OSM community for about two
years. I have been providing OSM training to a lot of university and
college students, NGO workers and Govt officials to pupularize OSM. Here
the volunteers are enthusiastic, dynamic. They want more and more field
based practice what can be possible only with a organized initiative. As
example the Opencity Dhaka project of world bank where about 30 students
mapped <http://www.openstreetmap.org/node/257375894#map=16/23.7166/90.4084>
three wards of old dhaka city and a recent Missing Maps Project in
Hazaribagh
<http://www.openstreetmap.org/node/257375894#map=16/23.7380/90.3690> and
KamrangirChar
<http://www.openstreetmap.org/node/257375894#map=16/23.7380/90.3690> sub
district what were coordinated by Pete Masters and Jorieke Vyncke. By two
weeks time about 20-30 volunteers completed field based survey to map these
area.

Glad to know that you want to commence a mapping in Kendua upazila of
Netrokona. I think its possible to do with our OSM mappers here. Please
visit our OSM Bangladesh face book group
<https://www.facebook.com/groups/152627941462625/> where you would see our
activities. Some more training and mapping parties I am planning to
organize in near future by our community.
For your project area we can use them and it is also possible to train up
the local community there to finish it. Please let me know what you are
thinking and the update from your side sothat I can announce it among our
OSM mappers accordingly.

Thanks and Regards

Thanks Jorieke and Pete for all your hard work in today's training session.
Happy to be part of this Missing Map and HOT initiative. The volunteers
from OSM Bangladesh Community who got training today are also motivated.
Some more volunteers are also willing to join with us, I will bring them in
monday.

I would like to thank to them who are volunteering remotely in this project
