Re: [HOT] Mapping in Ecuador - validation

2016-04-24 Thread Mike Dupont
the validation problems that I have seen are with changes between versions
of imagery. It might be good against bing but not against the last images
post event. No automated process will pick that up.

This is something that I have been thinking about. What about road
closures or planned road changes etc. Fires and crime. These are real
time or planned events that could be supported by their own layer in
OSM. Right now I don't know of any place that we could effectivly
store and publish road closures from a city in osm.

Re: [HOT] Hurricane Patricia Update: October 25

Hi all,
I dont know if I am doing something wrong. I am reading up on the
damage from patricia.
here it says https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hurricane_Patricia#Mexico
"The small town of Chamela was completely leveled" but looking at this
imagery
tms[99]:https://api.mapbox.com/v4/digitalglobe.vivid-latam-caribbean/{zoom}/{x}/{y}.png?access_token=pk.eyJ1IjoiZGlnaXRhbGdsb2JlIiwiYSI6ImNpZzRqYng4OTJ1NWd0emt2b3Q2dWhwNXQifQ.8ohSIF9elaL6Z6Cx69Joxg
in josm I do not see any differences between the bing images and the
original. I do not see any damage like we saw in nepal.
https://www.openstreetmap.org/?mlat=19.53&mlon=-105.07&zoom=15#map=15/19.5300/-105.0733
can someone point out the damage recorded so far? what has been the
impact of this storm?
thanks,

Prabhas, I would like to again express my condolences for your country.
I took a look at one tile. Going to need guidance. The bing and this layer
are off. It is hard to determine what is going on on these photos. Some
validated examples would be helpful. Basically it would be good to have
things we can point to and say : this is what that looks like on fuzzy sat
photos.

Re: [HOT] Free data for humanitarian purposes

2012-10-08 Thread Mike Dupont
Hi Lukasz,
Some ideas :

1. One source of data is the freedom of information request, formal
and informal. if you ask local agencies and companies for data you
often will get it.
2. I never heard about COD, but it reminds me of http://www.data.gov/
there is an open source app ckan that people are using.
hope that helps.

Hi there,
I am resigning from HOT, because it is so tied to OSM. and after being
refused membership to osm and being accused of being a troll, I a
going to go away
and work on my own for a while before I have something to share. I
still support HOT but i dont support the OSM board any more.
thanks,

Re: [HOT] Changes to Bylaws and Articles of Amendment

2012-08-27 Thread Mike Dupont
Hi kate,
I dont have time atm to review this. we are running a conference in kosovo.
but i do want to bring up one issue, that the osm board has decided to
block my application to even join the osm, supposedly because I did not
accept the CT, which I did, I would like to be a candidate for the board,
and my platform is to stop the license madness that is damaging the
community so badly. I would also like to make it easier for people to join
osm, because kosovars cannot afford 18 euros, they are earning 100 euros a
month if lucky.

I would like to ask the people from HOT to support me and also would like
to make sure that HOT is not going to kick me out for some strange reason.
thanks.

HI there,
I also see that HOT has to do with developing countries to help prevent
problems as well. I can tell you about my experience in community building
in kosovo, where I am right now organizing the fourth edition of the sfk
conference. I have some slides online on this topic, that I presented at
zagreb.

ok,
well this would be to take the dump files from frederik for example

This could be done, and then uploaded to archive.org. it could run on
anyones PC.
question is, Mkgmap does that work for you. Has anyone produces a
single file yet that you find good?
what type of resources are needed to do this?

I would like to nominate andrzej zaborowski for HOT,
he has :
1. tracing different maps during various HOT activations
2. translated the learnosm.org materials
3. done some imagery tiling / WMSing for people to use

According to his own accounts. I have "seen" him many times online and

Re: [HOT] Sop of work

2011-11-27 Thread Mike Dupont
Hi Frans,

The methodology for mapping is : focus on the important things.
You have a very large amount to do, lots to learn. It will not be
easy. You will never have enough people, and there will never be
enough time.
So start with focusing on the important things : Major roads, names of
them. Major points of interest. Mountains and landmarks. In cities
focus on places that people want to visit.
Take a look at travel guides and wikipedia articles, see what is
mentioned first, make sure those things are on the map. Focus on what
people are going to look for.

Also , learn from others. See what other people are doing on hot projects.

HOT is humanitarian, so basically, you are preparing for disaster.
When something horrible happens in your country, people are going to
need maps. You are going to need a team to work on this, a large team.
So you need to work on building up skills for people. Take a look at
places where flooding, earthquakes etc occur. you are going to want to
map those areas. Look at places affected by the tsunami etc. Those
costal areas will be in focus. You never know where disaster will
strike, you you need to be prepared.

Also, look what Mikel Maron is doing in Kibera http://mapkibera.org/
they are mapping a slum. this is also a humanitarian project. People
in poor condition need help. you can look for unmapped roads or
makeshift towns and try and map them.

But all if this is going to need a team, the best way to start
teambuilding is to invite experts. You have mappers in indonesia,
contact them.. Invite mappers to come and talk to your team. Schedule
a mapping day. Get GPS devices. Talk to schools etc. You need to be
aslo on the talk-id mailing list, and using the OSM resources that
people have mentions. Many of your questions belong on other forums.

my final bit of advice is this , read this article on how to ask a question :
http://catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html#forum
you need to choose your forum carefully to get the right answers. the
people on HOT are totally overloaded with work. You need to build up a
team and find funding for it.

If you really want to do something good, collect money for airplane
tickets and hotel costs for some OSM experts and invite them to do a
workshop with you.

thanks,
mike

2011-11-25 Thread Mike Dupont
Here is my text, I wanted to share this because I think it is
important and also applies to other members of Flossk :
Besfort asked to join HOT. He would like to help. He has done month
long contributions to OSM and has been also teaching and supporting
users in Kosovo. OSM work in kosovo is basically HOT work, because all
contributions to OSM in kosovo help the people directly and
indirectly.

Re: [HOT] Admins for HOT Tasks

2011-11-05 Thread Mike Dupont
I would like to help out more, but dont even know where to start. We
are busy with our upcoming conference and I have to prepare my talk.
It would be good to have a simple howto guide to help out.

Re: [HOT] HOT's Mission

2011-09-24 Thread Mike Dupont
well, as I understood HOT was to help people out. Sometimes you need to
develop software on the way, but not as the primary goal.
I develop tools to do things when I am working on hard problems, but these
tools are to serve the purpose and they are not the goal, but just that, a
tool.
So, I understood HOT as having the end goal of improving the maps to improve
peoples lives.

If you ask me if building another Ushandhi is inside the scope, I would say
no, it should be its own project, but to scratch together tools to help
massage data, I would say yes that is part of the process.

Re: [HOT] GPSToGo

2011-06-19 Thread Mike Dupont
>>HOT, the WMS hosting & image processing steps we have taken.

for the albanian flooding we had our own hosting on our own server. We did
not have gps devices cause no one could afford to help. We has support of
giscorps. We also had some data from city of shkoder.
For kosovo we used the same server (which is now offline), gps devices where
donated by unhabitat, drlizau, rrota.com and myself. in the beginning we
also hosted the data ourselves. now thanks to mikel we are using the
hypercube for some layers. The images, we got from begging, had no money.
Except Bekim from immap who purchased russian topo maps and donated alot of
data himself. And not to forget logisticsplus www.*logisticsplus*-ks.com,
which donated imagery, data and manpower.

I hope this is what you wanted.

[HOT] Recommendation for Humberto_Yances

2011-06-13 Thread Mike Dupont
Dear Committee,
I had the pleasure to work with Humberto_Yances from Colombia on flooding of
Colombia project. We worked together on importing the administrative
boundaries of Colombia and on the wiki and other validation issues.
It would be great if he got the chance to come to the SOTM.
thanks,
mike
