[HOT] DRAFT- HOT Nepal Response Community Survey

2015-05-20 Thread laura brittain
This looks great.
I wonder if you'd want to add any questions about difficulties people may have
had with the process or software.
For instance JOSM questions.
That was one reason I thought about not continuing to map at first and it's one
of the areas I want to give feedback about.
It could be a part of the loss of a lot of contributors, even with ID editor.

I'm available as a trained proofreader if anyone wants another set of eyes. But
you probably have enough. :-)

[HOT] Accidentally marked square as "Done"

2015-05-17 Thread laura brittain
Could some kind person please go into task 1047 and find tile #275 and mark it
not done?
My finger slipped.
It is not done.

Thank you so much!

[HOT] How to fully cover a grid square

2015-05-12 Thread laura brittain
Michael,
I've just been wishing for a grid, too. One that can be turned on and off so
it's not in the way.
Or the alphabet on the left, numbers on the bottom to sort of grid it like a
street map.
I do two things: look along geographical areas that already have buildings
(that's my focus)
The other is to do the boundaries of a tile and then work in in a systematic
way—like top to bottom starting on the left.
All the best.

[HOT] Suggestion to support Newbie development via Validated work

2015-05-10 Thread laura brittain
Good morning from California!
It would be great to have a validated tile that semi-newbs could examine to
learn from. Is there a way to show us one that's locked down and unchangeable?
Maybe someday it will be possible to create a dummy.

(How can we progress to where we can help with other parts of the tadks, get
more training?
Happy to just do buildings and easy things but I can be trained further.
[Not to hijack thread though])

[HOT] Worried about task 1018

2015-05-09 Thread laura brittain
Ideas regarding using newbs,
Please embed instructions (and a link to Google translate or another) in Task
manager.
Please put important instructions in Bold Capital Letters in Task manager.

Info on unlocking a tile isn't visible when you are locked in a tile and it's
hard to realize you have to go back and do that in TM.

Please don't let new JOSM users validate tiles unless they've been vetted.
In my case it would be a disaster.

HOT has been linked to all over in media. Of course you're inundated with
newbs. The message out there and in tutorials is that anyone can help with even
20 minutes and that learning how takes an hour or two. Um, no.

To avoid discouraging us, could discussions of our many mistakes be done off
the HOT list that is one of the sources we go to to learn?

Consider a message like this that pops up on unlocking a tile:
"Thank you for mapping —please come back and see what you can do to help in the
weeks, months, and years ahead."

Finally, I'm sure a lot of us would love to have someone comment on our work
and point out errors.
Just remember the feedback sandwich: one positive feedback on either end of the
criticism.

And if absolute newbs aren't helpful or needed please let us know so we can go
home.
Hope this helps! Thank you.

[HOT] Feedback

2015-05-07 Thread laura brittain
I agree with Kadja.
This seems to be useful work even for novice mappers. If it isn't I'm sure
we'll be told how to help better.
The basic guides and video are very good.
Adding simple, disaster-specific instructions will help a lot, but I'm sure
that will come.
It helped when task manager gave information about squaring buildings.
I don't think it's a waste of time to map buildings, especially in the country.
Imagine, the map might help people be found and cared for.
If nothing else, it's been an exercise in positive visualization.
I'm sure there's a place and a time to give feedback, I'll hold mine for that.
Thanks to all the OSM and HOT and KLL groups.
I'm in it for the long haul.

Re: [HOT] Should Newbies (Me) keep mapping houses and "easy" features?

2015-05-05 Thread laura brittain
Thank you Steve,
And another question for anyone:
Does anyone know how to make the JOSM building tools plug-in behave?
It works for awhile and then automatically starts making rectangles with only
two clicks. And not in the right directions.
I can't find any trouble shooting online for this plug in, even after reading
the wiki for it.

Also, the full tags mentioned by everyone aren't presets in JOSM or ID editor,
are they?
Do you enter them manually?
Is there a way to script this in the online editor?
Charlotte tried to help me but it's over my head.

I'm mainly using ID editor.

Thanks a lot.

[HOT] Should Newbies (Me) keep mapping houses and "easy" features?

2015-05-04 Thread laura brittain
Since a lot of work now needs to be done by more experienced mappers, is it
still helpful for newbies like me to trace houses and other "easy" features?
Does seeing every building in an area (especially isolated buildings) help with
rescue and aid?
A lot of these buildings seem really hard to get to, so if they're mapped it
would seem that they won't be overlooked, but I wanted to check.

Question 2:
Should blue and red-roofed buildings be marked, and if so, as buildings? They
are aid tents, right?

I'm sure I'm like thousands of newbs who are eager, dying, to help but not
wanting to waste time on unimportant tasks.
Please advise.

Thanks,
Laura

[HOT] Question about helping as newcomer

2015-05-01 Thread laura brittain
Hi,
I'm limiting my newbie mapping in Nepal tasks to things that seem simple. But I
don't want to confuse things with bad data.
After reading comments in the hotlist, I'm sticking to white squares.
Is it advisable to go ahead with:
Finding and marking individual buildings
Identifying bridges
Marking paths from roads to buildings?
These are the only things I can do without guessing, so I stick to them.

Also, It isn't clear how to label bridges. I couldn't find the dropdowns for
highway that were suggested in the instructions.
Also, does it help to mark a path that seems to disappear in trees? Some of
these buildings are isolated and I thought it would help to
show the part of the path that's clearly visible, if there's no other access,
but not sure.

Like a lot of people who are new, I really want to help. Please advise.

Thank you.
