Thanks Cristiano for the overview of translation in the OSM world and in
QGIS.
AFAIU the file/data/glossary that should be shared across projects is the
Translation Memory [transifex:6,wikipedia:7] as in TMX-XML file. I don't
know how this relates to the glossary CSV file that is available inside
iD@Transifex [8,9].

 QGIS rely on Transifex for both software and documentation localizations
[4].
 It may be worth asking them how well it works for that purpose.

Indeed. Maybe it was chosen to use only one tool hence Transifex was used
first for software and then also for documentation. They should have a good
understanding of pros and cons about Transifex or even other translation
tools and methods.

Did you get any feedback from your translators (end user of Transiflex) and
your 'final' end users (using your software documentation)? About ease of
work, required technical ability, quality of writing and so on? Do you
think that some people with language proficiency were not able to
contribute because of any technical barrier in the proposed workflow?

 Should we continue this discussion over at the LearnOSM-Coord list [5]?

I am quite happy with the wider audience here for global community
brainstorming, general ideas and feedback. We do not have many developers
and would-be translators in our internal list.

We can continue at the internal LearnOSM-Coord list for more detailed or
technical discussions and proposals specific to LearnOSM.
LearnOSM specificities:
- no software, documentation only.
- in the current form (for the good or the bad) it is not a one-way
translation from master-English to other languages. Translators and editors
in other language are free to propose, add or update contents in localised
versions without waiting for English version.
- intended for all levels, with high focus on beginners.

two more HOT related projects keeping since many years the translation
workflow in Transifex are QGIS [1] and GeoNode [2]
From my personal experience it is a very nice and reliable platform,
though I am talking from a developer perspective, and not from an end
user (translator) one.

Hi Cristiano,

We have been using Transifex in the past couple of years as a translation
platform for InaSAFE documentation, as Kate mentioned previously. In our
experience we found several problems with how it was not suitable to
translate long text or paragraph since it was splitted into several part of
text strings. Therefore when several people translate/validate these text
strings they would lose the context of the whole paragraph, and translate
only in the context of those strings. In result, made it a bit awkward to
read.

We are currently planning to change into something similar/same with
LearnOSM translation workflow, since a translator able to read the whole
paragraph and translate based on that context.

That's actually a really good idea. It could benefit not just HOT, but
the wider OSM community. It looks like Transifex supports multiple
localization formats [1], so it should not be a problem for
interoperability with other projects.

LearnOSM has been updated recently - in fact its under constant review  
update.


There are now significant parts of the site available in German, thanks 
to the efforts of Michael63-osm.


There are also additions to the Remote, Armchair  Mapathon section, 
including sections on (I've listed them this way as validators may find 
it handy to paste these links into feedback when validating squares);

Having worked with translators and translations on technical matters I
found that the best translations were done by a native speaker who worked
in the subject area.  When you try and translate a technical subject you
first have to understand the subject matter.  I once spent two hours
explaining the meanings of two lines of English to a senior translator who
wasn't happy with the quality of the initial translation.

In the end he accepted that the technical people all worked in English and
we would just do a sentence by sentence translational to the second
language that was essentially meaningless to satisfy a manager it had been
done.

It can be very difficult especially nuances.

less useful to tackle entire pages of unique text with headings and context
and flow and images.

Hi all,

It's my first post here so I'll present myself briefly. I'm Jorge from
Valencia (Spain), geospatial consultant, casual (hot) mapper and
member of the OSGeo foundation[1]. I've worked with transifex
(GeoServer Spanish strings), translated many docs from OSGeo Live
project[2], part of the beginner guide of LearnOSM a year ago and as a
matter of fact, yesterday started to translate the Coordination guide
also into Spanish[3].

About Transifex, at least in Spanish usually translations work well
sentence by sentence, even you need to have always the full text close
of course. I mean, a sentence in English almost in all cases can be
translated into a single one in Spanish so I guess Transifex could
work well with this kind of documents. And it's not just about
easiness or tracking changes, for me a very important matter is
consistency on the vocabulary, and with Transifex is easy to manage a
glossary of terms that different translators can agree, specially on
big languages like Spanish were things can be named quite differently
across Spain, Argentina or Mexico for example.
