Hi HOT! Hope everyone had a great holiday! As mentioned before I'm in
Burkina Faso for the first H2OpenMap campaign. The direct survey, with the
help of local communities look working pretty fine even if drain our energy
faster than I expected. In last 4 days we walked for 18km and drive for
53.4km. During that traks we finds 57 water resources in 3 villages. 11
water tap and 45 water wells. Almost the alf of them are in deficient
conditions and doesn't give water. The first goal of this mission to test
the method we've setting up seems close to be reached. I'm excited to share
results and considérations with OSM and HOT community of Burkina Faso.
Hope to see you soon.

Importing data like this is always a possibility. There are two
considerations that are important, the first is the copyright license
of the data (you would need to get permission from that group to
include the data in OSM). The second is the quality and accuracy of
the data. Given that it is just 8 wells I would assume the creators
of the data know how it was collected, and therefore know how accurate
it is. If the license can be ascertained and the data is decent then
you send an email to the imports mailing list outlining the import and
the process. For something so small I doubt there would be much
objection as long as the license is acceptable, but it is good to let
them know anyway.

Regarding the village you are looking to map, I see it is pretty well
mapped via Bing as you noted, however it is missing buildings. I will
map out all the buildings, should only take an hour or so at most.
Having the buildings on the map makes things like walking papers much
more effective for field surveys.

2015-02-22 Thread john whelan
This is personal view, from the existing mapping I've been doing the first
question I would ask is what is the data quality like for the data you wish
to import. A lot of what I've seen is poor quality. Does the area you're
interested in have decent satellite imagery? See if you can find it on the
OSM map first, that should give you the coordinates.

After that it might be more useful if you have contacts on the ground to
get them to tag the hospitals etc. on the existing OSM map. OSMAND on a
smart phone works well but you will need an internet connection to upload
the new tags, the tagging can be done off line. Walking papers are often
used as they are a lower cost solution.

Re: [HOT] H2OpenMap

2015-02-22 Thread Francesco Giunta
Hi John, thank you very much for your message,
I hope to have understood what you had writing, unfortunately my English
skill is poor.

Is my opinion that mapping water well by satellite imagery is a poor
quality work and definitive I do not want to do that. But thanks to those
who do, someone can fix those data by ground mapping campaign. The data I
would like to put in the map are more like these ones ( if not yet in OSM):

   -

http://thewaterproject.org/get_project_lists?country_name=Burkina-Fasoproj_status=3
   - http://www.ali2000.it/index.php/archivio-progetti-left/2013

I'm planning to go in a Burkina Faso village in November, I work in that
area since 2007, to drill a water well in a village I know, need it. At
the same time I would like to ground map the area and meet OSM/HOT Burkina
Faso community to share the project.

My mapping kit will be something like:

   - paper form field
   - garmin GPS dustproof
   - GPS Camera dustproof
   - if I lose or are stolen the gps and the camera, I'll have a dust proof
android smartphone in my poket with OSMAND or Geopaparazzi or some other
   app I've not chose yet

overpass water_well query: http://overpass-turbo.eu/s/7Ov
the visualization map I'm working on: http://www.h2openmap.org/map

The objective is to provide a pilot project, replicable on other areas from
other NGO. Find a good work-flow, (best practice?, protocol? how can I say
in English?) and put good data in the map and in OSM.

There are lot of things I would like to discuss with HOT community about
that and I'm sure HOT community can be very helpful.

Than you John for your attention and patient,

Cheerio Francesco
