They work for me as well, though I don't use them so much. It only
took me a while to understand what precisely they do and how to employ
that. Include masks basically put exclude masks on all other images
that coincide with the mask and leave the image with the include mask
unmasked. That's the only way to do it since the blending stage has no
notion of masks, only of alpha channels, so you can only take away
bits from images. And that's also the reason why overlapping include
masks don't work - you get holes in the pano. The content is taken
from the bit that's masked with the include mask, excluding all other
content other images could provide for that area.

So that's what was happening sometimes when I used include masks.
Couldn't Hugin rather use a more intuitive logic: merge the parts where
two include masks overlap? This could be achieved by setting the alpha
channel to 0 only if the pixel is not part of an include mask.

That would be great!

Now if only there was a way to check and easily tell when masks on
different images overlap.

Yeah Kay & Daniel,
Thanks. I did find the zoom setting. Unfortunately I also found some
bugs with its function on Macs and also with the mask editing
features. I did report them on the Hugin bug site though.

I can zoom in the mask tab (use the zoom menu). I have no problems
with the size of the cursor or mask.

Try ctrl left and right mouse clicking to add and remove points to a
mask. The Help has a more comprehensive desription.

Cheers,
Daniel.

They work for me too. The mask interface is very well thought out int
terms of indicating how it effects overlapping areas in the other
layers. My only gripe is that i wish the mask drawing tool were more
usable. The cursor and outline seem overly large for the task, you
cant zoom while drawing the mask (or even after one has drawn the
mask,) and frustratingly you can't add or remove points to an existing
mask although you can move existing points. It's possible I just
haven't figured out how to do do these things yet. I only just
stumbled onto how to zoom the planosphere in the fast preview a week
or two ago. :-)
The guys who have made this software have put a lot of thought into it
and it's always getting better.
