IMHO you bear no responsibility for the disappearance of the two students.

I actually think that the probability of you bumping into a disappearing
student for the third time in a row is highly unlikely, and I believe you will
make an excellent mentor. After all, correct me if I am wrong, isn't mentoring
students part of your daily job at university?

Great, can you go to the google app and register as a mentor:

The project that I really want to see materialize is regression testing
for panotools. If it was easier to test it might make life easier for
those who want to hack it.

Perhaps we can all pitch-in for a regression testing framework that can
be configured for different tools.

Yes I think this would be worthwhile.

Great!

We have two or three mentors volunteered so far, we need more at least
to do backup roles. Now is the time to volunteer for mentoring. We
also need a backup admin as I will have limited connectivity for some of
the SoC period.

I'm willing to be a backup admin and backup mentor. I won't be available
at mid to end of June.

I tried to apply as a mentor for hugin at http://socghop.appspot.com,
but I couldn't find a way to do so. Hugin is not listed when I select
Apply to become a mentor. Hugin is also in the list of projects that
haven't completed their organisation profile, maybe thats the reason.

Applications for students are open on 29th March at
http://socghop.appspot.com/ though please introduce yourself on the
hugin-ptx list before this time to discuss your proposal. Note that
not all suggestions are good, students will need to digest them and
come up with their own coherent project.

Our ideas list is here: http://wiki.panotools.org/SoC_2010_ideas

This page could use some work: some suggestions for skills required
for each, and suitable tasks for the patch we require from each
applicant.

We ask all applicants to set up a Hugin/panotools/enblend build
environment and produce a patch against Hugin's SVN repository to
show proficiency of the toolchain and your coding style. You can
find ideas in our tracker, either bug reports or feature requests.
Publish your patch for peer review on hugin-ptx. Note that in
previous years we asked for a simple patch to demonstrate the
ability to set up the toolchain, however this year we need evidence
of some coding skill relevant to the proposal.

Based on how I remember the process last year, I wrote this list of
assessment criteria used. Is there anything missing here or just
wrong?

* Previous Open Source Software involvement will be a bonus, but we
are also understand that summer of code is a useful introduction
to Open Source development methods for students willing to learn.

* Ability to program. We don't have any entry level positions and
will expect students to have the necessary programming
proficiency.

* Ability to manage time. Last minute applications are not evidence
of good planning.

* Previous Hugin/panotools/photography involvement (not necessarily
programming). We hope to gain contributors from this process and a
previous interest is an indication of ongoing interest.

* Our need for the proposed code. Some of the projects on the
proposals page are more needed than others, if this isn't clear
ask.

* Ability to communicate. We use the ptx mailing list, the panotools
wiki and sourceforge bug trackers, you need to be comfortable with
public communication.
