Re: What is 'MVS-recognized' disablement?
MVS-recognized (AKA "legal") disablement means that you have a CPU lock, a spin lock, or a super bit (bits in PSASUPER). Since no spin locks are programming interfaces, nor is PSASUPER, that basically leaves the CPU lock "for you". As Jim Mulder correctly posted, if the system releases a spin lock or the CPU lock and sees that the system is not legally disabled, it will enable (i.e., not preserve your previous disablement state): STNSM -- now disabled SETLOCK OBTAIN,TYPE=CPU -- still disabled SETLOCK RELEASE,TYPE=CPU -- now enabled Similar processing occurs if you have an FRR. If you are not legally disabled, RTM will give control to your FRR enabled (it does not matter if the FRR is set before or after you illegally disable). SETFRR ... STNSM -- now disabled blow up -- still disabled FRR entry -- enabled The cases where the system uses STNSM are typically those where it does not mind ending up enabled if something bad/strange happens. Re: Question regarding RACF migration.
Rick makes a good point. Once the great 1.9 divide has been crossed, we've never found any reason not to share the RACF data base in each plex. Even when templates had to be applied to the data base itself, lower releases always tolerated them. I know everyone does migration differently, but we have kept the same data base allocations and content since at least the early 90s. RACF *data* is never migrated along with ServerPac. Re: ISMF Question
Kees, If you play around with this you could discover that a "blank" entry can only be used in a very specific configuration. And I always do recommend anyone with a question first start by playing with a construct (not the production ones of course) and see what it does. For example if you have COMMAND or BOTH specified for the Command or Auto Migrate field, then you cannot use "blank" for Primary Days Non-usage or Level 1 Days Non-usage Same would be true if you specified Admin or User command Backup Auto Backup . . . . . . . . . And then tried to use "blank" in the proceeding fields. I think it would have been helpful if IBM had documented that in the Help Panels, rather than a user needing to try to use "blank" and then get an error message. I always did believe in more robust documentation in the help panels for ISMF but IBM has not quite gotten around to that yet. Conclusion, the "blank" entry is used in a very specific construct, one that has very little control over it. You are not specifying any details to ISMF. So it does nothing. There are no actions to take for a data set with that type of construct for the management class. So, no migrate, no automigrate, no backup, no gdg backups kept, etc. This may allow the STORCLAS to control the file but the MGMTCLAS will not do anything, from what I can remember. Re: What is 'MVS-recognized' disablement?
In a message dated 11/21/2007 5:44:16 P.M. Central Standard Time, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: >Acquiring a lock does not turn on a super bit. It turns on a bit in the locks held string. Right. I mis-remembered what I found by instruction stepping through GETMAIN many years ago, which was that a request for certain system subpools which require the requester's being authorized caused three tests, the success of any one of which would allow the request to be honored. The tests were (1) any super bit's being on, (2) any lock held bit's being on, and (3) the CPU's system mask has I/O interrupts masked off (aka "physical disablement"). I was building a front end to the I/O FLIH at the time and wanted to get a piece of ECSA while disabled. I discovered that having interrupts disabled was not honored everywhere in the GETMAIN instruction path, so I turned on a super bit and then got my storage OK. >I would recommend against writing any code which turns super bits on or off. I did this because I saw it done in IBM's I/O FLIH (IIRC), so I knew I could get away with it. Maybe next time I'll remember to get a disabled spin lock instead. It's also not a good idea to build FLIH front ends, in general, and unless your employer wants one built. Bill Fairchild Franklin, TN **Check out AOL's list of 2007's hottest products. The only other area I might also consider is your backend tapes for the VTS should you decide to add more virtual tapes. Make sure you have enough of them to support any additions you might make to the VTS. Lizette > > There are two main ways to tackle this situation, and likely you will > need to > do both. > 1. G'day, I want to know from a technical perspective if some one needs to migrate an existing system from an older version of OS (say MVS/ESA, OS/390 etc to Z/Os) what is the impact on RACF?. Would migrating the RACF to a newer version be a big enough Project(like a 6 months to 1 year kind of project)?. Or as in any migration from one version to another, RACF is also automatically handled?. Please advice. Thanks in advance for your response. Transparent TCP tunnel
Hi, Years ago, at another shop, I used a little app to redirect TCP traffic to one TCP port to another in USS. I think it was from IBM and was called tcpmap and parameters given were something like localhost port remotehost port. Problems is that I can't find any reference to this util/src anywhere. Somebody knows where to obtain this util. Basicly we are trying to forward one port to another on the same IP addres. Coudn't find any reference in the communications server docs to achieve this, so other suggestions are welcome as well. / Robert Winder De informatie opgenomen in dit bericht kan vertrouwelijk zijn en is uitsluitend bestemd voor de geadresseerde. Re: VTS Scratch Count Issue
Jacky, There are two main ways to tackle this situation, and likely you will need to do both. 1. The VTS is low on scratch volumes. The way DFSMSrmm handles this CBR3660A wto is to trigger a procedure for running expiration processing. Usually this is enough to return some volumes to scratch status. 2. If #1 does not give you enough scratch volumes you need to look at whether you really have enough defined in the VTS. If you really do need more logical volumes you have to follow the procedure to add/insert more logical volumes. You might want to refer to the redbook SG24-2229 where it states You insert logical volumes in a VTS by defining their volsers and their media type in the Library Manager's Insert Logical Volumes window (Figure 6-19). Physical cartridge movement is not involved. To access the window, select System management on the Library Manager Commands pull-down, then select Insert VTS logical volumes. Prior to inserting the extra logical volumes you should check how the tape management system will handle this; by default DFSMSrmm will automatically take ownership and add them to its CDS - but your system may be configured differently. ISMF Question
Hello list, I have an (awfully) basic question about ISMF: when defining SMS constructs (e.g. mgntclas) I can enter numbers of a "blank". I cannot find anywhere what the meaning of the blank value is. Where can I find what the system does, when I leave blank fields like: Primary Days Non-usage . . . . (0 to or blank) Level 1 Days Non-usage . . . . (0 to , NOLIMIT or blank) Backup Frequency . . . . . . . . (0 to or blank) Number of Backup Vers . . . . . .(1 to 100 or blank) Number of Backup Vers . . . . . .(0 to 100 or blank) (Data Set Deleted) Retain days only Backup Ver . . . (1 to , NOLIMIT or blank) (Data Set Deleted) Retain days extra Backup Vers . . (1 to , NOLIMIT or blank) And many more. Re: MFNetDisk fastsync is ready.
MFNetDisk FastSync mode is ready. New documentation. OK, I suppose that now is the time to distribute my new feature FastSync. I also add more pages to my documentation and more data about the FastSync and the risks and the operations. The next step will be to add support to some of the Shark CCW to enable FastSync to support it. However, my ASync mode already supports the Shark CCW so do not worry, the product will work with my current release using mixture of ASync and FAstSync for FastSync mode. Confuse? Read my documentation and understand how I do that. I also want to clarify that you can use my PowerPoint presentation for free and without any limitation. For example, You can present my solution to any potential customer and even make money from this presentation (for yourself). -- For IBM-MAIN subscribe / signoff / archive access instructions, send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the message: GET IBM-MAIN INFO Search the archives at http://bama.ua.edu/archives/ibm-main.html
z/800 to z9 upgrade questions
Hi We plan to upgrade our z/800 C01 to a z9 machine. We have currently about 130 Mips and we would need a double capacity. Some questions: - one processor or two ? - we heard that the ICF now a unique processor or can be shared with a general processor , but not with IFL. If it is in "non dynamic" mode , what would be the CPU load ? - is it possible to "upgrade" the z/800 for a test period to see the performance of the new configuration ? -- Miklos Szigetvari Development Team ISIS Information Systems Gmbh tel: (+43) 2236 27551 570 Fax: (+43) 2236 21081 E-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Info: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hotline: +43-2236-27551-111 Visit our Website: http://www.isis-papyrus.com --- This e-mail is only intended for the recipient and not legally binding.
