A failure at SHARE

2009-08-28 Thread Steve Comstock

Well, yesterday I was able to attend a full day at
SHARE in Denver. It was great to see old friends
and colleagues, to put faces to names I've seen on
ibm-main and other forums, and to meet new folks.

But I guess I have to admit I was a total failure
on one account: I was not snubbed by anyone! I
found everyone to be friendly and inclusive. No
one ignored me if I made eye contact. What did I
do wrong?

Nothing. You live in Denver, so the sycophants were hoping they could get
an invite to your hacienda for a free meal. IIRC, Thursday is dessert

Back when the z9 announcement was done here I queried the product
manager whether the hoopla re consolidating everything back to one
footprint indicated an abandonment of the sysplex dream.
Mm - of course not !
The z10 and even larger engine counts seems headed in the same
direction.

Personally, unless fully implemented, I don't see the point to parallel
sysplex. In other worlds clusters work, and cloud is well above the
event horizon.
Will z/OS still be a player, or will zLinux be the dominant force in
this pond ?. Barbara won't be happy if it's the latter ... :0)

(Friday question about priceplex)

It happens that independent systems/apllications are sysplexed
(connected together) just to get savings from licenses etc.

Q: why not to put all the systems on one large CPC?
From licensing point of view it can be as effective as parallel sysplex.
From RAS point of view - well, application A on CPC A and app. B on CPC
B is not more secure, unless you really integrate it.

Privileged progams are responsible for making conscious informed choices
about the subpools. The translation to/from SP252 for naieve callers taking
the (SP0) default has been around longer than I have. But I doubt very much
that that would even help in this case. The interface specification for the
API says...

* Enabled for I/O and external interrupts
* Holds no locks
* In task control block (TCB) mode
* With PSW key equal to the job step TCB key <=== Here's the first clue
something is wrong
* In primary address space mode
* In 31-bit addressing mode
* In either supervisor or problem program state <=== And here's the second
clue
* With no FRRs on the current FRR stack.

The doc goes on to say immediately after that;

"You can call the binder in both problem program and supervisor state and in
any PSW storage key."

The last statement appears to contradict the statement in the interface
definition, nevertheless as you are aware that statement is quite
problematic for privileged programs. The PSW key must match the job step
task's key - I believe that the requirement is specified this way because
load modules and program objects are step level resources and the binder
uses a low private step level subpool during processing.

But they also say the caller can be in supervisor state... and the only way
that could be a safe thing to do would be in an address space with an APF
authorized job step task, or in an address space with a system protection
key specified via PPT. The more prosaic case of a piece of (privileged)
infrastructure code performing a service on behalf of a completely
non-privileged program appears to me to be ruled out on integrity grounds
despite the ambivalence in the wording of the documentation.

I believe that the API was written in a completely naieve fashion much like
any other batch program and certainly without any thought to properly
handling the nuances presented by a privileged caller in an otherwise
non-privileged environment. Given that, we elected not to persevere with
using it. However, just to be crystal clear. These deficiencies of the API
were only the final icing on the cake. The real deal-breaker is that the
multipart class architecture of PM3 (as currently implemented) is unusable
at all. So even if the binder API were to be refactored at some time in the
future to behave like any other well formed system service, the result would
be moot.

Re: TSSO in a sysplex

2009-08-28 Thread Dana
So far I have made an update to TSSO to allow you to insert the system name
that issued a message, into the OSCMD operand in the AOF table. That seems
to be working quite well.

But I've come up with another question. We have two JES2plexes running in
one SYSPLEX. It appears that I am only seeing messages in TSSO from other
members of the JES2 plex, and no messages from members of the other JES
plex. Shouldn't I see messages equally from all members of the sysplex?

In reading the FM, it talks about the order of subsystems, and cautions that
one subsystem might receive a message after it has been altered by another
watcher of SSI 9, could JES2 possibly be snuffing out messages from other
JESplexes before poor TSSO gets to see them. The FM goes on to say that
SSI 9 isn't the recommended way to process WTO's now. It offers MCSOPER
and MCSOPMSG services as a more up to date way to do it. Do you think that
could possibly work better in this area?

Thanks
Dana

I'm guilty "first mention" this time and I'm unrepentant.

I said I was not going to be at SHARE and asked someone to snub
people for me. Translation: "I wish I were attending but I'm not.
Greet people for me."

Being a very strong SHARE advocate / bigot, I (and many others)
happily took the term "snub" as a name for typical interactions at
SHARE (which are very far removed from a snub).

An in-joke that is not very "in" and not much of a joke but pretty
innocuous as far as I'm concerned, and significant enough to be
added to the Devil's IT Dictionary as mentioned in this thread.

Hi all,

Under Unix System Services (z/OS 1.9), how can I copy some directories from one
to another and preserve all the attributes (i.e., last modified, last changed,
last accessed, created, etc.).

I am using something like: "cp -Rp /u/user1/source/*   /u/user2/source"

Thanks

Just a general comment on telling people to stop a thread. I agree this
thread should be stopped, and if Darren were monitoring the list like he
used to, I'm sure he would have piped up by now or disabled someones ID.
Many many threads in the past where people complain just seem to start new
threads, like this one. My advice, don't say anything. Threads like this
one might die faster that way.

And yes, I'm guilty of extending this thread too.

Oh well - Share is done and the snubbing will have to be continued again in
6 months! Maybe by then I will have a job and be able to come.

this will do what you want; but I haven't tested it.
