I think that you will find that the SE service console is still active.

Re: New ShopzSeries service

2009-11-09 Thread David Booher
My problem was that I was using an older 1.6 system that didn't have the
/usr/lpp/smp/classes.

For my 1.6 system, I can use the FTP/GIMUNZIP followed by the usual SMP
RECEIVE.
For my 1.7 system, I have it working with SMP RECIEVE FROMNTS using those the
SMP Java classes.

It seems to be working. Our shop still provides support for our products on
z/OS 1.4 thru z/OS 1.10, so these older LPARs are still around. As long as I
have a way to get the traditional SMPPTFIN file, then I'm OK.

Thanks to all for your help.

However, the PATH varies unpredictably from release to release,
so you're likely to get a JCL error. Then you need to experiment
trial-and-error until it works (unless the CPAC job is supersmart
and does the probing for you.) Worse, if you use a DDDEF in SMP/E,
you may get a failure with no explanation. Use the JCL DD.

You do not have to have a "CRYPTO" card to start ICSF.
Just define the VSAM datasets (PKDS, CKDS, TKDS), build the proc,
do the RACF rules, and fire it up. It will tell you that you don't have
the card, but will still initialize. We run it that way on one of
systems.

"Permanent" refers to the permanent (base) capacity setting of your CEC.
"emporary" includes the additional temporary (On/Off Capacity on Demand)
capacity. The first of those tripels refers to the current configuration,
i.e. including both On/Off CoD and Capacity Backup (CBU) or Planned Event
capacity.
The identifier is the (usually three digit) model number (such as 724 or Z02
on a BC machine), and the rating is the MSU rating.
If you have nether OOOCoD nor CBU/PE records activated the three fields are
the same.
These are CPC-values and do not reflect defined capacity/group caps. Take a

Lizette:

It's actually pretty simple in SDSF, as well. You need to use 3 SDSF
commands on the command line, once you have selected the file for viewing.

The commands are:

PT ODSN dsname volume disp
; where dsname is the name you want to save the data as; volume is a
volume serial where the data set is to be put or * to let the system
(DFSMS) select a volume for you, and disp is one of: OLD, NEW SHR or MOD
(MOD is the default).

Put the cursor on the first line you want saved and enter the command:
PT * n
;where n is the number of lines you want to capture. It can be a
number larger than what is available, and SDSF will capture all the
lines to the end of the file.

PT CLOSE - closes the data set and frees it.

The data set now contains the output you captured from the JES2 output.

When you are in SE, you can do a CC on the first line you want and a CC on the
last. Then on the command line, do a CREATE and you will get a dialog box. Just
like in EDIT.

If you want everything, then get in the list of sysouts for the job and do an
XDC to the left of the one you want. You again get a dialog box asking you for
the name, size, and DCB characteristics you want the output file to have. The
XDC will create the file, copy the data, then close the file. If you want
multiple sysouts in a single file, do an XD on the first to get the dialog box.
Then do an X on all the rest, except for the very last sysout. On the very last
sysout, do an XC which will copy the sysout, then Close it. That will copy each
sysout to the file in the order in which you did the X commands.

Re: STSI instruction question

2009-11-09 Thread Martin Packer
Hi John!

They are NOT secret, they're already in Type 70 SMF - as cut by RMF. And
have been for some time.

They relate to the increased flexibility of "Capacity On Demand" offerings
available with System z10.

Now, perhaps someone with more expertise in this area can chip in.

(Unsurprisingly I see these three pairs of numbers as all the same in all
the (many) customer sets of z10 data I've looked at.)

One of the new things returned by the STSI instruction are six (6) values:

Model-Capacity Identifier
Model-Permanent-Capacity Identifer
Model-Temporary-Capacity Identifier

Model-Capacity Rating
Model-Permanent-Capacity Rating
Model-Temporary-Capacity Rating

I take it from a bit of reading that these are values which are "hard
coded" into the machine via the millicode which is loaded and have
something to do with software billing numbers. Anybody know anything more?
Or is this an area which cannot be discussed by the "unwashed masses"?
Does the "Group Capacity" values in the LPAR defination affect them?

You do not have to have a "CRYPTO" card to start ICSF.
Just define the VSAM datasets (PKDS, CKDS, TKDS), build the proc,
do the RACF rules, and fire it up. It will tell you that you don't have
the card, but will still initialize. We run it that way on one of systems.

Very interesting. I was interested in the last paragraphs that gave
some figures on cost of software vs. savings.

In a relatively small mainframe shop, it might cost $250,000 a year to
license zPrime, and it could cost $8m to $10m per year on a big box. But
the savings can be substantial. On one large deal that Neon is working
on, the company calculates that using zPrime to defer hardware upgrades,
cut maintenance fees, and lower software rental fees could save that
prospective customer $100m over a two-year period.

That's real money, and you have to figure that IBM, and therefore its
lawyers, must be hopping mad.

This is dreadful! If the comparison doesn't work as expected,
IBM's out is to say you broke the rules, but they provide no
error message.

And nearby:

17.1.4.5 "z/OS V1R11.0 MVS JCL Reference"
17.1.4.5 Relational-Expression Keywords

The following keywords are the only keywords supported by IBM and
recommended for use
in relational-expressions. Any other keywords, even if accepted by the
system, are not
   intended or supported keywords.

And elsewhere nearby:

17.1.9 Considerations when Using the IF/THEN/ELSE/ENDIF Construct

 * You can specify symbolic parameters on IF/THEN/ELSE/ENDIF statements
provided that
they resolve to one of the supported relational-expression keywords
listed in the
preceding topic (that is, RC, ABEND, ...). Any other symbolic
parameters, even if
accepted by the system, are not intended or supported.

So,

//  SET X='STEP.RC'
//  IF (&X=4) THEN

is apparently supported, but:

//  SET Y=4
//  IF (STEP.RC=&Y) THEN

is unsupported.

Both the JCL parser and the doc should mutually be revised so that
all constructs "accepted by the system" are described as "supported"
and/or constructs not described as "supported" such as the OP
attempted result in JCL errors.

A BNF syntax diagram would be useful here.

It actually works with non-numerics - as long as the value is a valid

Birger Heede
IBM DK

Joel C. Ewing wrote:

More explicitly, the JCL reference manual states:
"Use comparison operators in a relational-expression to compare a

This doesn't directly address the special case where two numeric values
(after substitution) are being compared - in fact nowhere is it stated
that comparison of two values where neither is a keyword is a legal
syntax, although we know from empirical evidence it works with two
numerics.

The manual does imply rather strongly that the JCL IF/THEN/ELSE
relational operators work with numeric values only, not character
strings; and this interpretation is re-enforced by the lack of a syntax
for defining a character string constant.

Since string constants are not supported for these statements, the JCL
interpreter would attempt to parse "A", "B", or "C" operands to a
relational operator as a keyword and fail. So Birger is technically
correct in referring to this as an unacceptable "keyword", although this
explanation is confusing since the user obviously intended these to be
interpreted as string constants.

The inclusion of the always-true "STEPNULL.RC= 0 AND" portion of the

PSF reports it within the AFP version of the type-6 SMF record -- impressions.

It's accuracy varies, but you can calibrate it.

Re: SMF Image counts and physical page counts

2009-11-09 Thread Ted MacNEIL
>Look at SMF records 6 and 26.

Unfortunately, for non-PSF, the page counts are not entirely accurate.
For one, extra separator pages are not collected (IIRC, even the first ones
aren't).
For another, it isn't physical pages that are counted.
Rather, it's 'skip to channel 0' that's counted -- depending on the form --
there can/may be more than one per physical page.

For PSF (AFP), there are some issues with logical vs physical, especially with
2-up, 4-up (etc) and duplexed print.

Depending on the complexity of the form/overlay, your accuracy can vary.

The only accurate measure is the meter (on 3800's or later), but there is no
api (that I know of).

If you're using it for billing/chargeback, it might be good enough, if you do
some calibration before hand.

If you're doing it for throughput modelling, your better off using print times
rather than lines, pages, impressions, or feet.
Even that has a few issues due to buffers and how long before the SMF record is
written after the output has been purged.

But those don't show physical counts. That would require that the printer
itself send information back to the system. For instance, when you duplex, that
is one physical page but two "impressions" or "image counts". And other
printers can do multiple up which place multiple pages on a single physical
piece of paper. There is no what that I know of to get this information from
SMF.

Does anyone know of a way to obtain image counts and physical page
counts from SMF records? We've looked at file1 on the CBT tape and

We are at z/OS 1.10.

SYS1.PROCLIB is not being updated.

2009-11-09 Thread Enrique
Hi team,

I want to know if someone of you have faced some similar problem and its
solution or explanation.
OS/390 2.9

.-remove member SYS1.PROCLIB(JOBA).
.-from console "S JOBA"
.-the JOBA job is being started
.-IPL
.-from console "S JOBA"
.-Now the JOBA is NOT being started.

Another test

.-Remove the SYS1.PROCLIB library
.-S JOBA
.-The JOBA is being started and any job from the SYS1.PROCLIB can be
started too.
.-IPL
.-Now the SYS1.PROCLIB is not found.

Why i must IPL to take the SYS1.PARMLIB changes?
Is there some JES2 parameter to avoid this situation or PTF?

Best regards and thanks for helping me.

I haven't looked at Systems/C for a while. It gives you everything
Metal/C provides but with a complete runtime, and I prefer the syntax

IIRC, the runtime is statically linked. It would be nice if it could
optionally be loaded dynamically (DLL) to reduce the size of the load

Systems/C does offer a way to dynamically load the runtime and/or
your own packages of routines. Contact me off-list for the technical
 details.

The upcoming release also has features to aide in SMP/E maintenance
 of those packages.

The big value add for me was the cross-compiler which was

lightning fast compared to compiling in batch or USS.

Yes - people are usually rather surprised at the savings
 in time/effort in a cross-compile environment.

Also - it's important to note that Systems/C offers "IBM mode",
so you can cross-compiler your IBM programs and compile them
"just like" the IBM compiler (not METAL-C, "regular" LE IBM C/C++.)

So - you can take advantage of a cross-compilation system for building
 IBM-runtime-based programs.

Are Systems/C and Systems/C++ different products?

Not really - Systems/C++ is an "add-on" to the Systems/C
 product (you can't get Systems/C++ without Systems/C.)

It's positioned as a separate product to reduce costs for those
 people who don't need C++.

Also, the Systems/C++ compiler is a different compiler than the
Systems/C compiler. The two compilers share common components
(optimizer, codegen, etc..) , but have different front-end parsers.

OTOH, I was impressed by the failure to generate better code, e.g., using

Job opening in Sunny North Florida.

2009-11-09 Thread Richbourg, Claude
Just to let anyone know about this that may be interested.

Position is in Tallahassee, Florida and it is a state job.

Watch the wrap;

https://jobs.myflorida.com/joblist.html?dispmode=27.-5&ERFormID=newjobli
st&ERFormCode=3.502021613167675

Click on 'Computer and Electronics', then look for System Programmer III
in DC - Corrections. Under vacancy name, it is listed as 'NETWORK SYSTEM
& DATA COMMUNICAT ANALYST', near the bottom of the page. Don't know why
it is listed under Network, but it is a z/OS position.

Thanks,

Claude
