Re: problem with spool volume serial

No, I've just gave up. Now I'm thinking, how to convince people to cold
start, in order to completely change the spool's volumes prefix (that
would be better for our naming conventions). And if they won't agree, I
will just cut the last letter from the prefix.

problem with spool volume serial

2006-06-28 Thread Dorota Sorokulska
Hi,
We have defined in SPOOLDEF 5 character prefix assigned to jes2's spool
volumes. That gives me maximum 40 volumes according to JES2
Initialization and Tuning Reference book:
IBM recommends that you limit the prefix to 4 characters (well...) only
so that you are not restricted to a maximum of 40 volumes as is the case
if you use a 5-character prefix which also limits the suffix to a single
character (A-Z, 0-9, $, #, @, -).
The problem is, that I've already defined 39 volumes with all available
suffixes except '-' and now I'm trying to define the last one. Let's say
that the spool volume prefix is 'SPOOL'; I defined volume 'SPOOL-' with
HASPACE dataset but after issuing command $S SPOOL(SPOOL-),FORMAT,P I've
got message :
$HASP003 RC=(04),
$HASP003 RC=(04),SPOOL(SPOOL-) - CONTAINS AN INVALID SUBSCRIPT

Can anyone help? What I'm doing wrong? Or what have I missed?

Thanks
Dorota

If your current prefix is SPOOL, you should be able to change it SPOO
and it will pick up all your current volumes and allow you to specify a
whole bunch more if/when needed.

zos 1.4, but we plan migrating to 1.7. If you're right about the dash, I
should start thinking about changing this prefix and prepare for cold :)
But id doesn't change my current problem - what's wrong with dash in 1.4?

Dorota - what version of z/OS are you running? It looks starting with R5
the dash - is no longer supported.

Just a wild guess, by have you tried:

$SSPL('SPOOL-'),FORMAT,P

?

Since the dash is a special character, perhaps the entire parameter must
be enclosed in tick marks?

I think it was a typo in the manual. The Summary of Changes section in

I believe a cold start should not be needed. From the manual:

Modification: Cold start. If originally specified with 5 characters
and the fifth character is removed, then $T operator command is
allowed.

This last sentence is what should save you from a cold start.
