In the announcement letter for STP on October 10, 2006, IBM had a
Statement
of Direction that read:

"Statement of general direction

Enhanced Coordinated Server Time accuracy
IBM intends to enhance the accuracy of initializing and maintaining
Coordinated Server Time to an international time standard such as
Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). The then current server is planned to
have the capability of attaching to an external time source, such as a
Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver.

Network Time Protocol (NTP) client support
IBM intends to enhance the STP design to provide Network Time Protocol
(NTP) client capability, so that Coordinated Server Time may be
initialized
and maintained to time provided by an NTP server. The purpose of this
function is to allow the same time across an enterprise comprised of
heterogeneous platforms.

All statements regarding IBM's plans, directions, and intent are subject
to
change or withdrawal without notice. Any reliance on these Statements of
General Direction is at the relying party's sole risk and will not create
liability or obligation for IBM."

Either we just move the serial cable from the S100 to the z9, or we set up
STP to use NTP from the S100. In any case, there is no rush since the z9
will work with the 9037s that we already have installed.

Here's the blurb from the S200 brochure:
"Sysplex Timer for Mainframe Sync

A dedicated Sysplex timer port outputs
serial time strings for IBM mainframe
Sysplex systems. The Sysplex Timer
provides a common time reference
across all the members of an IBM
Sysplex. The Sysplex Timer is a key
component when systems on multiple
CPCs share access to the same data."

It uses the RS-232 interface to the 9037.

Typically 0.0001 second deviation or less.

We implemented GPS external time sources via the Symmetricom SyncServer
S100 last year. The current model is the S200, listed on www.sync-server.com

Using the S100's sysplex timer output, our deviation from the atomic time
is 0. When we were using the dial-up modem, it always was at least .1
seconds off, and sometimes more. We always had to go in and test the modem
to make sure it was still working.

Now, I never have to worry about it, and the sysplex timer is always in
sync with the LAN NTS servers with 0 deviation.

Step 1: Buy the PC interface card from IBM, with the interlink cable and
related software for the PC.

Step 2: Install same in PC to be used as interface. Connect interlink
cable(S) between PC and 9037-002 boxes as indicated in documentation.

Step 3: Connect 9600B (or faster) modem to PC with appropriate cable.
Also connect modem to telephone line.

Step 4: Activate Sysplex Timer application on PC and follow on-screen
instructions. Have the phone number handy for your external time source.
I used ACTS, the Automated Computer Time Service from the National
Institute of Standards and Technology, in Boulder, Colorado.

Here's the doc from NIST:

http://tf.nist.gov/service/pdf/computertime.pdf

This document, on page 5, describes the algorithm for calculating a loop-
back to calibrate the time signal. The 9037-002 Sysplex Timer utilizes
this feature. On my Sysplex Timer, the most recent time synchronization
message had the value 111.9 in the field msADV. Since this value starts at
45 ms, the 111.9 value is that measured by the loop-back calibration
algorithm.

Time was when ACTS counseled against using such a high speed modem
because buffering and DSP introduce unpredictable latencies.
Simpler is Better. At that time, they also documented that the OTM
was correct at the center of (I forget which) bit in the OTM character.
I no longer see such text in the ACTS doc. Perhaps it remains in
the help text that ACTS supplies on command.
