I don't think so. As far as I know, z/VM does not emulate the old S/370
I/O architecture (SIO et al.). Now, if it did, that would be
interesting. If it did, then you would be able to run OS/360 (as well as
MVS 3.8j) on an IFL. Wouldn't that be interesting?

Who's up to starting a project to "port" OS/360 or MVS 3.8j to run on an
IFL? Just kidding.

By using Daemon Tools (http://www.daemon-tools.cc/dtcc/download.php) you can
make your system believe the ISO is loaded into a virtual DVD drive.

Then you can use Windows Explorer to examine the ISO. Only part of this
image contains a folder with the VOB files that can be burned to a DVD using
your favorite burner.

Thanks Jim - if you come up with something better I would gladly try to host
it. I can admit to knowing who Wally Cox is and agree there is a similarity.
The ISO format worked because it was provided to me. I could try to zip the
contents and let people unzip it. They still need their own way to view it.
That is where I wished I could plop it in my DVD player.

I am only hosting it, so anyone with a better format is welcome to snail mail
it
to me or post it on their own site where I can doenload it.

It gets much worse the older the mag tape !!!

Don't even unroll or attempt to mount a mag tape on anyone's tape drive if
the tape's content is valuable. Instead have it "read" by specialists. I'd
contact the Computer Museum first and follow the expert's advice.

In 1964 mag tapes had an iron oxide layer on a mylar backing, perhaps 200 or
as much as 556 bpi. Around 1975 a tape librarian demonstated to the CIO the
value of "permanent tape retention". Few of the 10+ year old tapes were
still readable. Typically when you removed them from the case (tape's
container) a cloud of "rust" fell out.

No maybe about it. We had to borrow a projector and screen whenever

The first place this tape should go is to the Computer History Museum,
where Al Kossow can get it into the archives.

Control Program of OS/360 reel tape

2007-09-04 Thread Sylvia Gorman

Hi all,

It's been a while since I posted here. While cleaning out my office
I ran across a 15 inch tape reel. The label says "The Control
Program of IBM Operating System / 360". It's dated 1964 and it says
it's 60 minutes long. If anyone would like it I'll be glad to send
it, if you're willing to pay for shipping. It weighs close to 10
lbs. and I live in Illinois (if that gives you any hint on what
shipping might cost).

I'm currently set to 'no-mail' on the list, so if you have questions
or want the tape, please reply directly to me.

Thanks,
Sylvia
