HSM Duplex tapes

2009-01-06 Thread O'Brien, David W. (NIH/CIT) [C]
HSM duplxing requires that both the Primary and Alternate tapes be the same
length (or the alternate needs to be longer).

Is there any chance that requirement will change so that a 9840D could be the
Primary while duplexing to 9840Cs, a shorter tape?

Just a rumor heard at work that I would like to confirm or deny.

Thank you.

The names of our original files are DFHSM.HMIGTAPE.DATASET and
DFHSM.BACKTAPE.DATASET.

Tape name is irrelevant. HSM use non-specific volume request (mount
scratch request).
HSM inserts additional qualifier in dataset name, COPY to distinguish
it from original. So it is up to you to direct original to local and
copy to remote library. If you're using IBM ATLs then you can use ACS
routines for that. Hint: assign different STORAGE CLASS, the rest should
be indentical for both copies.

Re: Name of HSM duplex tapes?

2007-01-27 Thread Joel C. Ewing
From z/OS V1R6.0 DFSMShsm Storage Administration Guide, section on
Names of Migrated Data Sets, 2.1.21.4.17:
The following tape data set name for each copy of a cartridge-type
tape volume is created by the TAPECOPY command or the duplex tape option:

  prefix.COPY.HMIGTAPE.DATASET

and similarly in section on Generating Names of Backup Versions of Data
Sets, 3.1.7.4.7:
The tape data set name for each copy of a cartridge-type tape volume
created by the TAPECOPY command or the duplex tape option is:

bprefix.COPY.BACKTAPE.DATASET

It would appear your prefix value is DFHSM.
