Re: How long to install a ServerPac

2008-07-09 Thread Brian Westerman
It really depends upon the involvement of the staff at the site that I'm
installing it on. If I do it myself, it typically takes a day or two to get
to the first IPL, and from 2 to 4 weeks to first production IPL, depending
on the mix of software that needs to be configured. If there is also a LOT
of non-IBM software is involved, it can add about 25 to 50% to the time. At
a site that is making a HUGE jump where I have to perform a lot of upgrades
to the other stuff that they are using, there is really no way to tell how
long and get it right. Sometimes it's very quick and sometimes (when
problems arise where I might have to deal with a vendor), it can take a
while longer.

If the client helps a bit I can shave off about 5 to 10% of the time. If
they help a lot, it normally throws the timetable into a shambles and it
takes a REALLY long time. :)

I usually did them alone, in about 6 weeks.

Please answer with number of people on the project, and approximate
number of weeks to complete the project. I know what I tell people a
project like this should take, but I would be interested in knowing
how far off I am.

Re: How long to install a ServerPac

2008-07-08 Thread Staller, Allan
It depends on

1) experience of sysprogs
2) #number of sysprogs involved
3) major subsystems installed (CICS, IMS, DB2, MQ, WEBSPHERE.)

The more subsystems involved, the more sysprogs involved with all of the
conflicting demands, scheduling and coordination involved. The CICS
guys, IMS guys, DB2 guys... all want to do their own maint.

The experience of the sysprogs with respect to server pack (and general)
will also have a significant impact on the schedule.

The testing cycle is the third major impact. How many test shots,
frequency, ...

In my case, from receipt of order to ready to implement is 7 days. No
major subsystems and only 1 sysprog. When properly timed with the
available outage cycle (quarterly maint outages), it can be as little as
30 days from receipt to production implementation.

If I was lucky enough to have nothing else to do, probably a few
weeks. As it is, usually several months.
