Phil,
Thnaks for pointing that out, I scanned that page, and missed the
description, however I was looking at the program description in the
application for the specific programs, and it states:
Program Intent
The Remote Development Program is intended soley for testing solution
provider developed software in an z/OS V1 R8 environment. Remote
Development Programs (RDPs) allow selected solution developers the
opportunity to test their software in a new environment thus
supplementing porting, migration or regression test efforts.

The use of the word soley in this seems pretty unequivocal to me. All
I can say is that the two descrptions seem to contradict each other, so
the truth is probably in the middle.

I've seen developers use this facility to develop their products IIRC,
SAS used it a few years back to develop the 64-bit support for their
C/C++ compilers. Presumably, they negotiated more favorable pricing
terms than those offered to more casual users.

Also, to clarify, this service isn't new. I've been using it since some
release of MVS/ESA V4 (1992?). It's essentially time sharing for the
upcoming release of the operating system (running under VM).

IBM configures the base system and keeps it current with the latest
driver(s) and/or maintenance. And, the people in Dallas, TX that do the
work are top notch! You IPL and customize your VM guest system and, of
course, pay for the cycles.

The other offering is running a system in house from local tape. They
send you new tapes every month or so; you reload the operating system.

I had always assumed that nearly all serious ISVs used one or the other
or both of these early development/testing options. I may have been wrong.

I'll be the first to admit that I could be wrong on it. It is odd that
the overall description, it says Development, but on the application for
a contract, it states soley for testing. I would be happy as heck to
be wrong on it, and the rates do seem relativly reasonable, still more
than a FLEX box, but a lot less than a z900 bc.

Re: Another article on the Flex/IBM issue

2007-03-21 Thread Terry Sambrooks
Hi,

Thanks for posting the link to the article Gary, it was good reading.

I am concerned that for small businesses the numbers do not add up with either
a low end z9 or the Service Option.

The article states correctly that the IBM Software is provided largely free to
PWD member. (Even the annual premium does not break the bank at $1800.)

To purchase a t-Server and FLEX-ES combination and consider renewal every three
years puts the cost at around £3000 per annum, whereas the Service Offering at
$2000 per month is considerable more and makes the difference between a viable
option and not.

Purchasing a z9 plus associated DASD is a non-starter at our level of turn-over.

Personally given the hiatus with PSI, I see Fundamentals Systems as being
collateral damage due to emulation seemingly being at the heart of things,
but that is only my opinion which could be way of the mark of course.

Regard - Terry
