There should be a universal rule that managers
not
have access to technical (aka sharp) objects.

Went out of town to a conference. Got a panic call. My boss had 'fixed'
the system. Took over an hour to walk him through recovery. I told him in
colorful terms not to fix anything else until I got back to the office.

OTOH, I've fixed things pretty well myself by not understanding that with
which I diddled.

I figured out that you went through panel 6 (storage group) and then
option 4 (volume) and then option 1 (display). When you enter
panel 6 (storage group), change the CDS Name from 'TECH.SMS.SCDS'

The thing you want to see in the display is:

Either do a CONVERTV on the volume using DFSMSdss or REINIT SMSVL8 and
SMSVL9 with the STORAGEGROUP parameter and make sure that those two
volumes have been added to the CSLFGRP2 storage group (option 6, option
4 (volume), Define. Activate from ISMF Option 8.

Bob,

You do not need the VOL(*) parm if it is SMS-managed. VOL(*) will not tell
SMS to span the file over the 9 volumes; in fact it tells SMS to use one
volume. However, the DATACLAS assigned may include the dynamic volcount
parameter which might enable the volume to span.

Can you double-check your STORCLAS routine and ensure that this data set

You can define an SMS managed VSAM file without specifiying the volume
parameter IF your Dataclas has a volume count defined. In the example
VOLUME(*), you would normally get 1 volume; but IIRC the VOLUME COUNT or
the DYNAMIC VOLUME COUNT parameters in the dataclas will allow additional
volumes to be added.

Re: unable to Allocate Space on User Volume

2006-09-05 Thread Richards.Bob
Bob,

As others have pointed out, the ACS routines need to assign this dataset
a storage class (SC) in order for this dataset to be SMS-managed. If you
do not know how to modify the SC routine, let us know. We can help you.

In the very least, you need a filter list that contains either a mask of
the dataset, or a fully-qualified dataset name in single quotes. Then
you need to make sure that the SELECT logic tests for that filter list
and assigns a storage class. Finally, make sure your storage group
routine SELECT section test for that storage class and assigns it to the
CSLFGRP2 storage group.

Re: unable to Allocate Space on User Volume

2006-09-05 Thread John Kington
Robert,
The absence of IDC0181I messages means that your ACS routines did
not assign a storage class nor a data class to your vsam dataset. You
need to look through your storage class ACS routine to see why no
storage class was assigned.
The DFSMSdfp Storage Administration Reference documents the ACS
routines. You will probably want to have a copy at hand.
If you want help going forward, you will probably need to provide the
entire ACS storage class at a minimum. I would think twice before
posting something this sensitive on the mailing list. Perhaps you
know someone in another shop that can help you if you are the
only z/OS person left.
Regards,
John

This data set name does not match your FILTLIST you sent earlier - or have
you merely inserted an 'x' in the data set name to obscure it for some

I have to wonder if these data set names are new. That is, have you just
modified your STORCLAS ACS routine to include these data set names and
assign them to a STORCLAS? If so, did you translate and validate before you
re-activated your SMS configuration? The messages below still indicate you

It may have been updated, but it certainly hasn't been translated since
then.

Bob, you said earlier:
This list has always worked until SLFVNTE was added. If you have modified
the STORCLAS routine, you must translate it and validate it before you
activate your SMS configuration.

Absolutely what I meant. I actually updated my test lpar with code similar

catch having him display the ACDS.

Bob,

Could you go to option 7 (Automatic Class Selection), then do option 5
(Display ACS Object Information) and post the results? Are they what
you expected?

Robert,
Verify that the volume is in CONVERT status in ISMF or the vtoc (IEHLIST)
shows that
it is a SMS managed volume. QF just indicates that the volser is defined to
SMS.

Bob,

Go into ISMF Option 6, and list CSLFGRP2 you added the volumes to. When
the display appears, type LISTVOL next to CSLFGRP2 and scroll over to
columns 24-26 and tell me what they show for the two volumes you added.

Also have you given us *all* the error messages?
