Re: Z/OS 1.4 to 1.7 Migration

2006-08-25 Thread Petersen, Jim
We are on z/OS 1.7 and have a project currently going on to migrate VS
COBOL II to Enterprise COBOL. All VS COBOL II programs are currently
executing okay under both z/OS 1.6 and z/OS 1.7.

My customer is currently on Z/OS 1.4 and is planning to migrate to Z/OS
1.7 by March 2007

Following are my observations on Z/OS 1.7 migration (Application program
Specific).

Batch OS/VS COBOL : Existing load modules will
run under Z/OZ 1.7 with out any change.

Online OS/VS COBOL with CICS TS 3.1 : Will ABEND under Z/OS 1.7

VS COBOL II : Existing load modules will
run under Z/OZ 1.7 with out any change.

JCL : All support for
JOBCAT/STEPCAT is removed

:

ISAM : Support for ISAM files are
removed. All ISAM files must be converted to VSAM prior to Z/OZ 1.7
migration

VSAM : Support for VSAM keywords
IMBED, REPLICATE and KEYRANGE is removed.

Can anyone confirm that VS COBOL II load modules will continue to run
under Z/OS 1.7. Do I need to consider anything other than the above
mentioned for the migration?

Yes, but you must supply a //STEPLIB for the run time modules.

2006-08-22 Thread Daniel A. McLaughlin
You'll probably get 100 'it depends' answer on this one. How many CICS
regions do you have? How many DBs, or other online things? How much batch?
How much development?

It's not a one size fits all situation.

z/OS 1.4 to 1.7 Migration

Anyone have an estimate of the time required to migrate from z/OS 1.4 to
1.7? Relatively small z/890 system with three LPARs. Any comments on the
amount of time is helpful.

Re: z/OS 1.4 to 1.7 Migration

2006-08-21 Thread Len Rugen
I would say that you should be able to install and convert a test LPAR in a
week or two if you don't have any of the JES2 exit conversion issues or
something like that. We have a log of fairly closely integrated software
for our size shop, so it takes us longer. Probably 2-3 weeks of work, but
interspersed with some intensive head scratching. Of course, we always get
pulled into the latest crisis or can't do anything due to production
schedules.

Your test time would vary, anywhere from none to user check-off and
acceptance.

Once you get it going in test, it should take about week of conversion prep,
maybe a weekend to hot test production, then the real conversion the next
weekend. It only took me a few days to get our test LPAR converted after
the sandbox was well in place.

Of course, then I discovered that we didn't get a Cobol compiler, ours had
went out of support, so I'm waiting on that product to get ordered before I
move on with testing.

Our biggest issues were the JES exits, new versions of IOF, Vanguard
Administrator, CA-MIM, ThruPut Manager and probably more. Some will get
moved to production on 1.4 before we convert to 1.7.

I plan for 6 months for a new OS migration.
