SMF and LOGSTREAM Datasets
SMF data can now be sent to LOGSTREAM datasets thus removing the 32K VSAM dataset limit and reducing the frequency of switching SMF Datasets. Has anyone done this? Haven't done it yet, but looking into it. There's a good redbook available on the topic. Re: SMF and LOGSTREAM Datasets
I converted to LOGSTREAM with relative ease a few months back and I have not regretted it. I followed a document called Migrating SMF from Data Set Recording to Log Stream Logging, and it worked like a charm. I created several log streams (CICS, DB2, RMF, etc) and it has made life easier for all. Frank J. Re: SMF and LOGSTREAM Datasets
Same experience here as well. The white paper listed below was a great guide. I have some processes that I run to offload the data once a day to a daily gdg. I have not had any problems. I would not suggest doing this for LOGREC, yet. I encountered a lot of problems with running reports. Especially if there were no records selected. I was getting permission errors. IBM stated that it worked as designed. So, I converted my LOGREC back to using SYS1.LOGREC. -Original Message- From: IBM Mainframe Discussion List [mailto:IBM-MAIN@bama.ua.edu] On Behalf Of Martinez, Frank J Sent: Wednesday, September 28, 2011 9:24 AM To: IBM-MAIN@bama.ua.edu Subject: Re: SMF and LOGSTREAM Datasets I converted to LOGSTREAM with relative ease a few months back and I have not regretted it. Re: SMF and LOGSTREAM Datasets
Pesce, Andy wrote: I would not suggest doing this for LOGREC, yet. I encountered a lot of problems with running reports. Especially if there were no records selected. I was getting permission errors. Permission errors? It must be something I missed? Please tell me more about those 'permission' errors. Where do you get the errors? In LOGSTREAM putting EREP data there, using the datasets associated with LOGSTREAM or extracting it to your ACCUM datasets? RACF access? Usage of the utility using to define LOGSTREAM? IBM stated that it worked as designed. So, I converted my LOGREC back to using SYS1.LOGREC. Do you have any background documentation(s) for that 'WAD' thing? I'm on LOGSTREAM for LOGREC for many centuries, ok, wait, wait, make that 'years'. :-D :-D I can't remember having any problems with it except estimating the storage (in Coupling Facility) way too small in the beginning. To stay on topic, I plan to go on LOGSTREAM for SMF later when I'm rich and grown up... :-D TIA!
