Subject: Upgrading from a z890 to a z9 BC

Hi,

Our management has decided to upgrade one of our z890's.

IBM has recommended we upgrade to a z9 BC.

Do we have to use the Linux based HMC?

YES

If we do, can it control the z890 and z800 we will have in the HMC network?

YES

Will it be able to work together with the other OS/2 based HMC we have?

What do you mean? Do your two OS/2 based HMCs talk to each other today,
or do they both have the opportunity to connect to the service element of
either box?

You can have all three HMCs on the same LAN, the Linux one can control all
three machines, the OS/2 HMCs can continue to control the two old boxes.

Once you use the Linux based HMC you won't want to use the OS/2 based
HMC. Okay, that is my opinion. Laggards will have trouble using something
new. Being able to right click ICONs instead of looping around a task list is a
blessing.

TIA

Gadi

2007-11-02 Thread Salway, Nigel
The z9 requires a high-level of the HMC program. IMHO, the easiest way
to get this new level is to get a new HMC. In our case, we upgraded from
a 7060-H30 to a z9 BC. The existing 7060 HMC could not be upgraded to
control a z9 and as far as I know the HMC version shipped with a z9
can't be used to control a G5/G6 processor. As you are running z-series,
it is possible that you can use your existing HMCs, but you will almost
certainly have to upgrade the level of the HMC code to do so. Check
with IBM.

I think that HMC hardware and software is downward compatible. But not
always upward compatible.

There is a relativity easy workaround: every HMC I have worked with
includes a web server. Using a suitable browser and a suitable level of
the Java runtimes, you can perform most all HMC functions.

Note: depending on the level of HMC code, IE and MS Java may -not- be
suitable. Firefox with Sun Java runtimes has worked for me every time.

Hope this helps and good luck.

Hi,

Our management has decided to upgrade one of our z890's.

IBM has recommended we upgrade to a z9 BC.

We currently have two z890 that are in a basic sysplex. We are running
z/OS 1.7.

We also run a z800 that is not connected to the sysplex. The z800 is
controlled by the same HMC as the z890's.

As far as I remember the z9 BC uses a linux based HMC.

Do we have to use the Linux based HMC
If we do, can it control the z890 and z800 we will have in the HMC
network.
Will it be able to work together with the other OS/2 based HMC we have.
