z/VM RACF installation planning
Group, We are looking at using RACF for z/VM 6.1. We have RACF for z/OS V1R12 and are looking at sharing the RACF database between z/OS and z/VM. The RACF System's Programmer Guide has reasons why we should run the RACF utilities from the z/OS side. Our z/VM mainly has just z/LINUX guests and the directory doesn't change often. When sharing DASD in R/W mode between CPUs some performance issues may arise. Q). Can the RACF database be maintained from z/OS and just have a R/O link to z/VM? For as little as we change z/VM can we just load the "z/VM" record changes from MVS? MVS can tolerate the z/VM RACF records. Can it also generate the z/VM records or tolerate us loading the records from an MVS program? Q). How much RACF database direct record manipulation should we think of doing (or can we do)? However, it's our understanding that z/VM RACF requires HLASM; which is an additionally priced product on z/VM. For this reason, we provide our assembler on z/VM to keep the costs down. If you're just using it for the RACF requirements, it can help save some $$$. On z/OS - HLASM "comes with" the operating system, but, I don't believe that is the case on z/VM. - Dave Rivers - -- riv...@dignus.comWork: (919) 676-0847 Get your mainframe programming tools at http://www.dignus.com -- For IBM-MAIN subscribe / signoff / archive access instructions, send email to lists...@bama.ua.edu with the message: GET IBM-MAIN INFO Search the archives at http://bama.ua.edu/archives/ibm-main.html
Re: z/VM RACF installation planning
Dave, I haven't done this, but looked into it one time. I would think the issue with trying to keep the RACF DB Readonly on z/VM is that it's not just your admin updates that occur, it's things like the last time a person logged on, etc. That info is continuously being updated. We ended up running separate RACF DB's. I don't recall there being a requirement for HLASM. I seem to recall you only needed that if you were installing exits. You may want to post this on the IBMVM list. They are mostly well versed in both z/VM and MVS. Speaking of IBMVM there was a pretty good thread earlier this year along the lines of can/should the RACF DB be shared--http://www.mail-archive.com/ibmvm@listserv.uark.edu/msg34524.html. I find that odd, as an ex-VMer that IBM doesnt include HLASM .. Allen: I find that odd, as an ex-VMer that IBM doesnt include HLASM ...with VM ..it does with z/OS ..
