It's possible you shouldn't have asked this question. It
sounds as though you want to ask questions and get answers
without otherwise participating. If you get only responses
to your questions, you'll never see or reply to other
people's questions that you might know the answer to. You
also won't see all of the other good information that shows
up here. And, as already pointed out, you won't see the
answers to the same question you have that was asked by
someone else and already answered.

Some people remember those who take without giving, and
won't respond to their questions.

Now, it's possible that you normally browse the Listserv
via the web interface and do, in fact, read (and maybe
reply to) more than just your own Q But that is
certainly not implied by the way you asked your question.

Put a special sequence of characters in the subject of your post and configure
your mail reader to flush any IBM-MAIN messages without this sequence.
Unfortunately, this will also cause you to miss any replies from people who
respond to the digest without updating the title.

Set your account to NOMAIL. When you wish to ask a question, set it to MAIL,
post your question, wait for a few days while people reply, and then set it
back to NOMAIL. You will receive more mail those few days than just the
responses to your question but it should not be too onerous to hit the delete
key.

Set your account to NOMAIL permanently and browse threads you start via the
archives.

Any of these approaches will cause you to miss the fact that someone posted a
question almost identical to yours and already received an answer. Reponses to
redundant questions frequently result in a recommendation to search the
archives.

Thanks, Wendell! FWIW, this thread is simply full of constructive
feedback that I actually always love receiving. I haven't felt beaten
upon on here in at least a few years. ;-) Even if I do again at some
point, I'll know that it stems from frustration with one of our outputs

I'm glad to hear that you like the new PDFs. After I got used to them, I
think even I prefer the new style over the old one. We just apparently
need to rework some specific pieces of source to ensure that it all
renders well, and the feedback in this thread has been fantastic for
pinpointing those instances.

Re: SMPe "rollout" of maintenance

2019-03-15 Thread Jesse 1 Robinson
We have needed to manage/maintain multiple releases of "MVS" for decades. We
always create a new CSI for each release and tie all components to that CSI
with DSN qualifier(s). There is NO mix-n-match. The main motivator is that
while a CSI can have multiple TARGET and DLIB zones, it can have only one
GLOBAL zone. For any given APAR, two different z/OS releases may or may not get
multiple PTFs depending on FMID: not all components are necessarily updated in
each z/OS package. Moreover, we install each ServerPac into its own CSI. With
multiple sysprogs doing the work, I can't imagine mushing different releases
into a single CSI.

OTOH we stick with a single CSI throughout the life of a single release. PTFs
get installed in one place.

That's how I like to operate, with one variation: I prefer to rotate among
sysres sets rather than cloning and deleting, and I don't dedicate a sysres set
to one LPAR except when I'm in the process of promoting a testing a new level.

I have a target zone for each sysres set and a dlib zone for each dlib set. If
I need to add maint (even just one ptf) to a res system, but don't want to
change an already existing one, I clone the existing sysres set and target zone
and zoneedit the pack names. My catalogs are always set up to use ** and
IEASYMxx so that nothing gets messed up.

I maintain lots of sites and literally hundreds of zones this way. When I no
longer need one, I scratch the sysres set and the dlib set and delete the
zones. It's a pretty solid way to handle things.

If anything happens due to maintenance, I always have something to fall back to
without having to change anything except the IPL volume and the load parms.

Re: Highly technical question - how do I only get my posts?

2019-03-15 Thread Susan Shumway
I sometimes use Google Groups to access a thread because, for example,
it displays all responses chronologically regardless of the thread
branching - makes it easier to print or forward complete feedback from
you all. I poked around there and found an "Email updates to me" topic
option that *might* accomplish what you're looking for.

To give it a try, go to a topic (e.g., the URL for this one is
https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/bit.listserv.ibm-main/qlwJxFzmo_Q
), click that tiny down arrow under the topic title (the hover text
calls it "Topic options"), and select "Email updates to me." I clicked
it and see that it doesn't seem to have any additional options, so I
suspect it just emails your Google account every time there's a new post
in a thread. It's worth a shot, I guess.

VCHID for Hipersocket

2019-03-15 Thread Gilson Cesar de Oliveira
We are upgrading our boxes from zEC12 to z13.

One of the interfaces we have been using is Hipersocket and for z/13, manuals
say that for Hipersocket, the VCHID (Virtual Channel Id) should be at the range
of 7E0-7FF.
We have used CHPID Mapping Tools and the IODF generated for this channel set
the VCHID 7C0.

Does anyone know if it is correct or do we have to change the VCHID in HCD
using the range recommended in the manual (7E0-7FF).

Please, if someone could help we appreciate that.

IN SYSMOD JADB62H. THE RETURN CODE (12) EXCEEDED THE ALLOWABLE
 VALUE. DATE 19.074 - TIME 02:41:58 - SEQUENCE NUMBER 68."

The key is "SEQUENCE NUMBER 68". SYSPRINT segments are utility messages
listed in the output and identified by an arbitrary sequence number. It can
frankly be a PITA to find this segment in a large APPLY, but it will often tell
you exactly what went wrong. In any case you should read the segment before
hitting the PMR/ETR button. This advice pertains to any install/utility problem
during APPLY.

still face the same error.

we are planning to have only one version and all both 6.2/6.1 fmids are in

2019-03-15 Thread Jousma, David
Did you follow the instructions in the Program directory for allocating,
mounting, and creating the proper directory structure? Also, just so you know,
if you have a prior version of Ent COB installed, it will be deleted. If you
need both around, install the new one in its own target and dlib zones with
different dataset names.

Re: Software volume category

2019-03-15 Thread R.S.

Kees,
You explained how it works, thank you for your help.
It does not differ to much for real tapes.
I also use DEVSUP custom-defined categories for library (volume)
partitioning purposes.

Does it answer my questions? Unfortunately no.  :-(
(My questions are for better understanding, education. I don't have any
problem to solve)

BTW: I also use separate categories for PRIVATE volumes, but I was told
by some IBM-er it is not needed, since PRIVATE volume can be mounted
only on Volume Specific Mount Request = by the volser. Categories are
necessary for Non-Specific Volume Request ("hey, ATL, give *some* tape
for output").

I mean SMS-managed tapes, and possible entries in DEVSUPxx member, for
example default
MEDIA11 =000B
(this is default for JC media, also called EATC)

Question: where the category is recorded?
AFAIR it is recorde in the ATL, that means Library Manager (PC inside
the library).
However is it recorded anywhere on z/OS side?
Neither VOLCAT, nor RMM show this value.

Q2: Is there any difference between ISMF.2. (Volume - Mountable tape)
information and output from IDCAMS LISTCAT VOLENTRY(Vvolser) ?
Of course I don't mean visual aspects, rather source of information.
LISTCAT takes info from VOLCAT, what about ISMF panels? Is there any
complementary information, i.e. recorded in SMS CDS?

Q3: What is the purpose of volume categories? Is it specific for just
z/OS (mainframe systems) or it is something widely used by ATLs?
Is there any table describing default categories including media JD and
JE or it does not make any sense, because this media is not supported in
z/OS?
(note: JE media is for TS1160 which is not supported in z/OS neither
directly, nor as VTS backend)
