I don't agree (surprise!) I've always advocated putting all your eggs in
one basket, and then taking really good care of that basket with
backups, DR, procedures, dual this, dual that, etc.

For a test of a single bit you can do a logical and on a copy of the byte or
use NRK.
For testing multiple bits you can execute a TM.

You mean, EXexute a TM.

Presumably the "wrong link" previously worked. If IBM have moved the
service somewhere else, shouldn't they have provided redirects from
the old location to the new one, and/or very visible banners telling

I don't know if anyone else has come across this but HSM went into a hang state
in production for several hours. There was no indication of this and it only
came to light because jobs began to fail due to datasets not being recalled.
This has been reported to IBM and no doubt a fix will ensue.

However the customer has asked me if an alert could be generated if this
happens again. Does anyone have any ideas how this hang state could be detected
so that an alert could be generated ?

John.

I have seen situations where HSM hangs due to a hardware fault on a tape
device. If the resultant WTO or WTOR is not replied to, and/or is accidentally
removed the device can be left hanging for weeks.

Re: HSM went into a hang state

2021-12-10 Thread Lennie Dymoke-Bradshaw
I have seen situations where HSM hangs due to a hardware fault on a tape
device. If the resultant WTO or WTOR is not replied to, and/or is accidentally
removed the device can be left hanging for weeks.

The most common reason I have seen for this is HSM managing a volume that
contains the HSM CDS's.
I strongly suggest isolation of the HSM CDS's to a non-hsm managed volume(s).

The most likely reason for the hang is a grs deadlock between HSM (managing
the volume) and HSM (accessing the CDS's.
Perhaps if the condition in excess of (e.g. 15 min). alert the operator.

Regards,
John.

Re: Replacement for TM instruction

2021-12-10 Thread Seymour J Metz
For a test of a single bit you can do a logical and on a copy of the byte or
use NRK. For testing multiple bits you can execute a TM.

Subject: Replacement for TM instruction

Hi all,
I would like advice because i have a situation where i need to check a bit of a
storage area, usinganother storage area as a pattern and not an immediate.

I have something like this :
A DCX'1C'B DCX'08'
 TMA,x'08' JOX
But instead of using x'08', i need to use the variable B in the comparison,
because the content of B may change. So, i would need something like this:
 TM A,B
How can i do that ?
Thanks in advance.
Best Regards

can you declare a timeout for things interacting with the HSM ?

Check the logs / SMF records every so often. If no recalls in
15/30/60 minutes a message on console?
