Re: z13s with single CPU able to use SMT?

You could try an RMF CPU report, which should show MT information if it is
enabled.

But the "+N" on your display seems to say the multiple cores are online but not
available for use, so you wont be using them. The underlying hardware is
telling z/OS "no" I guess.

Re: z/OS 1.13 - USS Upgrade Problem

2012-06-18 Thread Patrick Loftus
This doesn't apply to HFS filesystems, but here is a post from a slightly
different topic which may have some bearing on the problem you found:

"Just found this information related to the ZFS delay I'd had, which I'd filed
away. It's copied from a redpiece. I chopped bits out here and there I think,
but the full text is in the following Redpiece:
http://www.redbooks.ibm.com/redpieces/pdfs/sg246580.pdf

2.12.2 Mounting zFS file systems copied outside the sysplex
If you have a specific system located in another sysplex that is used for
preparing and servicing UNIX System Services file systems that are type zFS,
then the first mount may take at least 65 seconds. This is caused by the write
protection implementation.

As long as the aggregate is attached read-write, the identifier is active in
block zero (0). As a result, on ADRDSSU COPY or DUMP processing, it is copied
as well.

When you mount or attach the aggregate in the target production system, zFS
sees this identifier. Because it does not reflect the sysplex environment, zFS
waits 65 seconds for an update of the time stamp value within the identifier.
If the aggregate is used read-write outside of the sysplex, then this time
stamp should get updated twice a minute, as mentioned earlier.
If no update occurs, this shows that the identifier is there without a reason.
In this case, after the 65 seconds, zFS attaches and mounts the aggregate.

To avoid the 65 seconds wait time on access to the aggregate in the production
environment, unmount or detach the source aggregate in the service system
before using ADRDSSU COPY or ADRDSSU DUMP.
OR
Switch the source aggregate to read-only access, using the ISHELL modify
interface from the mount table panel or the /usr/sbin/chmount shell command.
Then copy the contents of the aggregate. This switch removes the write
protection identifier, as well."

Our CICS v3.2 bill went up something like 10% in 2011. We're on v4.2 now, as

We're just upgrading to IMS v12 from v10, so there's another 10% on that bill

Now both are rising around another 10% in Jan. Ouch.

IBM would argue they're delivering a lot of new features for the money.

Re: ZFS MountCall / Osi Wait

2013-06-17 Thread Patrick Loftus
I have these notes from an IBM Redpiece. I can't find the original copy, but
here are my notes.
Doesn't answer your question of how to cancel the recoveries though. I'd be
interested in that answer myself. We have a system with almost 700 ZFS
filesystems, and IPLing that after a failure can take about 15 mins to recover
all the filesystems.
Not sure why yours is taking almost an hour though.

START OF NOTES --
2.12.2 Mounting zFS file systems copied outside the sysplex
If you have a specific system located in another sysplex that is used for
preparing and servicing UNIX System Services file systems that are type zFS,
then the first mount may take at least 65 seconds. This is caused by the write

As long as the aggregate is attached read-write, the identifier is active in

When you mount or attach the aggregate in the target production system, zFS

waits 65 seconds for an update of the time stamp value within the identifier.

OR
Switch the source aggregate to read-only access, using the ISHELL modify
interface from the mount table panel or the /usr/sbin/chmount shell command.
Then copy the contents of the aggregate. This switch removes the write
protection identifier, as well.
END OF NOTES --

We also now run the following JCL as part of our z/OS cloning process:
//ZFSADM12 EXEC PGM=IOEAGSLV,REGION=0M,
// PARM=('-aggregate  SYS1.SIGYROOT.OSY7A1 -recoveronly -verifyonly')

I know what you mean - I also find it annoying, and it just seems a bit messy
somehow.
Other culprits I know of are CA MSM, and CA Common Services (TNGE component).

On a related note, from an automation point of view, you can beat a simple "S
taskname", with associated "initialization complete" type message, and "P
taskname" with associated "shutdown complete" message. And then there is
WebSphere Application Server.

All,

I have been thinking about this for awhile,, but cant seem to find the answer.
 So asking my fellow listers if I am missing something. Workflows are a one
and done affair, and for repeatable processes you need to add it again.The
problem is that the filesystem location for the workflows are usually buried in
various installation manuals, not always easy to find. Lately, I have been
working with the zCX workflows to provision, alter, upgrade, etc.

My question is that it would be nice if there were a panel that would
optionally bookmark all of the various workflow definition files that have been
used or might be used again? I dont see that? Am I missing something?
There is something somewhat rudimentary in the create workflow screen with the
pulldown, but I dont know if thats zOSMF doing that, or the browser doing that.
  But then that would likely be just for me?

What if we had a public workflow that we expected many people to use to
provision xyz?

I'm sure there is an answer to this, I'm just not picking up on it.

Dave

Re: ZFS Address Space, shared ENQ but filesystem isn't mounted

2022-12-29 Thread Patrick Loftus
Consider the following command in that case:
  https://www.ibm.com/docs/en/zos/2.4.0?topic=commands-zfsadm-detach
And have a look at the other zfsadm commands in that manual whilst you're there
in case anything useful jumps out at you.

Re: ZFS Address Space, shared ENQ but filesystem isn't mounted

2022-12-29 Thread Patrick Loftus
Perhaps see if the zfsadmin fsinfo commands reveal anything that might give a
clue:
https://www.ibm.com/docs/en/zos/2.4.0?topic=commands-zfsadm-fsinfo

e.g. any shrink/salvage operations in progress, is it quiesced, what is the
status, any connected clients.

I'd open a Case with IBM on this one if you have support.

Tried that. Didn't work. Told me that the file system that was contained in the
ZFS dataset was mounted somewhere. OMVS disagrees.

2023-01-05 Thread Patrick Loftus
Interested to know more about that recommendation for zOSMF, as the zFS manuals
indicate since v2r3 it's beneficial to move zFS back to OMVS address space.

Wonder how the situation will differ, if zFS didn't run as a separate address
space (as recommended, at least for zOSMF's benefit).
Instead if zFS was managed by the OMVS STC itself...

And the default is noswap I see, meaning a "swap" can be done at a later time:

IBM has come back to me that this current situation is a result of running
BPXWMIGF without the swap option. I asked them if it's documented anywhere.

Re: How to determine if Enhanced HOLDDATA received?

2023-01-18 Thread Patrick Loftus
If you do a cross zone query against the SYSMOD name of the FMID (e.g.
HRF77B0), then select the GLOBAL zone, then "L" for HOLDDATA, you will see all
the SECINT class holds if they are there.
If they've also received the SECINT assign statements, there will also be
SYSMODs with a SOURCEID of SECINT.

Kurt,

As one the do not run apply check, how can I determine if such holddata was
receive or not? I believe that second holddata is relatively rare so if one
receives holddata, how can we determine the source for it?
I respect the decision who can access the data, but I need to understand if
the client received such holddata or not during security assessment

Re: How to determine if Enhanced HOLDDATA received?

2023-01-19 Thread Patrick Loftus
The holddata for SECINT looks like below. Note the function SYSMOD, not PTF
SYSMOD ID:
++ HOLD(HSMA230) FMID(HSMA230) REASON(BHx) ERROR DATE(yyddd)

 COMMENT(SMRTDATA(FIX(UIx) SYMP(B5.9,T5.7)

 CHGDT(yyddd))) CLASS(SECINT).

++ HOLD(HSMA240) FMID(HSMA240) REASON(CHx) ERROR DATE(yyddd)

 COMMENT(SMRTDATA(FIX(UIx) SYMP(B5.9,T5.7)

 CHGDT(yyddd))) CLASS(SECINT).

++ HOLD(HSMA230) FMID(HSMA230) REASON(BHx) ERROR DATE(yyddd)

 COMMENT(SMRTDATA(FIX(UIx) SYMP(B7.5,T7.2)

 CHGDT(yyddd))) CLASS(SECINT).

++ HOLD(HSMA240) FMID(HSMA240) REASON(CHx) ERROR DATE(yyddd)

 COMMENT(SMRTDATA(FIX(UIx) SYMP(B7.5,T7.2)

 CHGDT(yyddd))) CLASS(SECINT).

++ HOLD(HSMA220) FMID(HSMA220) REASON(AHx) ERROR DATE(yyddd)

 COMMENT(SMRTDATA(FIX(UIx) SYMP(B7.5,T7.2)

 CHGDT(yyddd))) CLASS(SECINT).
Etc etc

This is unlike the normal full holddata, which can be the PTF SYSMOD ID's:
++HOLD(UJ09068) FMID(HBB77B0) REASON(BA64026) ERROR DATE(22314)

 COMMENT(SMRTDATA(CHGDT(221110))) CLASS(PE).

The optional SECINT ASSIGNS file, which you don't have to download, look
like this:
++ ASSIGN  SOURCEID(SECINT) TO(UIx).

++ ASSIGN  SOURCEID(SECINT) TO(UIx).

++ ASSIGN  SOURCEID(SECINT) TO(UIx).

++ ASSIGN  SOURCEID(SECINT) TO(UIx).

++ ASSIGN  SOURCEID(SECINT) TO(UJx).

++ ASSIGN  SOURCEID(SECINT) TO(UJx).

++ ASSIGN  SOURCEID(SECINT) TO(UJx).

++ ASSIGN  SOURCEID(SECINT) TO(UJx).
Etc etc
In the example from Dave Jousma, with the APPLY SOURCEID(SECINT), I believe
this would only work if you've also obtained the ASSIGN file from Resource
Link too.

When you run the REPORT ERRSYSMODS report, for SECINT HOLD CLASS it will the
"SYSMOD NAME" as the FMID ID, which is different to a "normal" HOLD which
lists the PTF SYSMOD.
Made up example::
HOLD SYSMOD APAR ---RESOLVING SYSMOD HOLDHOLD
FMID NAME NUMBER NAMESTATUS RECEIVED CLASS SYMPTOMS
HMJ4102  UW31189  AN80203  UW32213 GOOD   YESPE
HSMA230 HSMA230 AHx UIx GOOD YESSECINT

We may be talking at cross purposes here; I'm concerned about the hold class
SECINT, not the source with the same name. The SECINT hold is on the PTF
with the exposure, not the PTF correcting it.

   LIST HOLDDATA HOLDERROR.

Hi,
I gather there is no supplied connector specific to z/OS.
Does your site use SSH to connect to z/OS and reset passwords, or do you have
an in-house written connector?
Thanks

Yes. Once a day, or when my checked out password expires I sign on to Cyberark
and checkout the new password. I then can use that to logon to any system
regardless of the RACF database it uses.

Is it still true that IBM does more extensive testing for quarterly RSUs
than on the other monthly RSUs? It's been suggested to me that this may no
longer be the case. But wisdom used to be to perform maintenance on the
quarterly's.

My understanding was (may be dated) that IBM performed more stringent
testing with zOS, CICS, DB2 and other components at the quarterly RSU level
that wasn't done on the other monthly RSUs.

Re: Introducing IBM Virtual Dev and Test for z/OS

2022-06-16 Thread Patrick Loftus
It's possible the IBM Z requirements are for the "Virtual Dev and Test for z/OS
instances" component, and the x86-64 requirements are for the other two
components, "Virtual Dev and Test for z/OS web and Software based license
server" and "Image storage server".

These components are mentioned in the hardware requirements.

One more little confusing item I noticed: In the announcement letter under
Software requirements Operating systems we see:
• Ubuntu Server 22.04 LTS for IBM Z and LinuxONE; IBM z/Architecture(R) •
Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, 18.04 LTS, and 20.04 LTS; x86-64 hardware • Red Hat(R)
Enterprise Linux (RHEL) Server 7 and 8; x86-64 hardware

This is just weird. What are those two Intel Linuxes doing there?
Surely, surely this doesn't in any way involve i64 emulation on real zArch
hardware?

It's an odd omission, certainly.

However, if you don't absolutely have to use DFSMSdss, DFSMShsm *does* allow
wildcards and will backup files in a directory subtree. Available in z/OS 2.3
with PTFs or in the base from 2.4 onwards. Andrew Wilt of IBM did a very
complete presentation at the last GSE virtual conference on the topic.

The notepad structure itself would reside on a Coupling Facility, so there's
no possibility of creating or using that structure without a Coupling
Facility LPAR, regardless of CFRM policies or CFRM CDS datasets.

Do you currently have a CF, running a Parallel SYSPLEX ? or multiple CF's ?

  what box are the CF's ? one on the z13 one on the z15?

I think the only factor I can see, without knowing your complex would be if the
CFRM policy, if any has been built at the appropriate CFC level to support both
processors and you have enough storage defined for the CF's to support DB2 data
sharing.

Is there a way to list the associated File System that houses the directory
and an associated file(s)?

I can get the best guess by doing a D OMVS,F which will display the mount
points for each file system, but,

Wondered if there might be something available that given a specific file of
interest, it would be able to display

The actual File System?

Re: FTP problem

2021-08-19 Thread Patrick Loftus

He's tried z/OS to z/OS and had same issue.

I'd probably stop using the Windows client, and focus only the z/OS
client, FTPing to the z/OS FTP server on the same system, to rule out
any complications from Windows, and as many as possible from external
network.

Gadi,

You mentioned Windows delay. Have you tried a z/OS FTP and noticed a longer
runtime?

Hi James,
SDSF doesn't report any paging.
I haven't seen any paging in a long time.

Check storage while you’re at it. Could address spaces be swapping out because
you are so low?

 Hi,
 We are in the midst of a DR test.
 A user is complaining that they are have problems using ftp.

 When the issue the ftp command from the command line in windows, they get the
prompt for the user name almost immediately.
 Once the user enters the password and presses enter, it takes over a minute to
get the prompt for the password.

 Has anyone encountered this problem.

 We do not have a similar problem on our production system.

 The production system is a z15-t02. The LPAR has 92 GB of storage.
 The DR system is a z13s. The LPAR has 16GB of storage.

 Both are running z/OS 2.3.

 Any help would be appreciated.

 Thanks

 Gadi

Re: Has D OMVS,P output gone AWOL?

2024-08-28 Thread Patrick Loftus
Manual says the 042I gets issued "In response to a DISPLAY OMVS operator
command where process data was not able to be collected".

So you were not able to gather PFS data.

Do other OMVS displays look normal, such as D OMVS,O or D OMVS,L ?

Nothing for zFS?  e.g. BPXF288I Physical file system ZFS is terminating

I assume you have FILESYSTYPE(ZFS) in the BPXPRMxx that D OMVS shows is
in use?

What happens why you try to issue a valid or invalid command directed at
ZFS? e.g. F OMVS,PFS=ZFS,command

So there should be definitions there.
