Short on Storage
We periodically have Short on Storage conditions with CICS. Not being a CICS person, I'm trying to find out what can be done to monitor and or prevent Short on Storage conditions. Of the top, I don't think it's really possible to expect we'd be able to absolutely prevent them. Basically, how can the CICS guys be proactive in trying to prevent the SOS condition. Also, is there a way our Operations staff could react quickly to relieve the SOS condition prior to calling the CICS guy, waiting for him to VPN into the system to troubleshoot etc... Re: Alter access to datasets
Does anyone know if the STGADMIN Facility Class will allow the Storage Guys to ALTER a dataset that they do not have direct access to? The RACF Administrator thought we could remove the ALTER access from our SYSPROGs and that the Storage guys could ALTER in the event of problems. ex. running out of space, directory blocks etc... Then they would only grant access to SYSPROGs for upgrades. -- For IBM-MAIN subscribe / signoff / archive access instructions, send email to lists...@listserv.ua.edu with the message: INFO IBM-MAIN
Re: Alter access to datasets
ex. CAI.OPS.OPSLOG or COMPWARE.LMS.CHKPTA The concern is someone will do something and try to delete a log entry to cover their tracks. These are mostly ISV products that I'd think would be tracked in SMF records. My thought would be to accept the risk, since these are not critical datasets. Auditors have a different opinion. The next thought is to remove the ALTER access and then give us temporary access when we need to upgrade the products or "fix" a problem. -- For IBM-MAIN subscribe / signoff / archive access instructions, send email to lists...@listserv.ua.edu with the message: INFO IBM-MAIN

Storage Guard
Does anyone remember a product called Storage Guard? I believe it was a Boole and Babbage product. It was able to provide a highwater mark for DASD Pools and I believe HLQ, with minimum overhead. I'm looking for this product, but not sure if it was sold or rebranded. If not, does anyone know of other products that can provide this information? Right now, I only know of products that do point in time sniffing, so we can get close, probably do 15 minute intervals, but this is not as accurate and has a lot of overhead. Message Handling
Does anyone know why a message would change when it's sent to the system log? Example: When the message comes out in the CICS started task log it is: 2014292 03:16:16.20 STC31160 0090 +DFHMQ0307 I 10/19/2014 03:16:16 CICSPROD Successful connection to queue manager QMGR. When it hits the system log, it is: 2014290 01:06:05.99 STC25627 0090 +DFHMQ0307 CICSPROD Successful connection to queue manager QMGR. Notice it drops the date/time after the message id. Verify APF libraries
We're making the change from LNKAUTH=LNKLST to LNKAUTH=APFTAB. We've compared what is in LINKLIST to what is in APFLIST and came up with a list of datasets that are not in APFLIST, but could need to be APF-Authorized. Is there an easy way to determine if the datasets need to be APF-Authorized? Is there any SMF records that might show if a dataset was previously used as being APF-Authorized? Changes to the system/3rd party products
We've been getting a lot of questions from audit regarding how we can tell if ALL changes are authorized. In the past, we've told them all changes are tracked/approved via our Change Management Software. The changes are not actually promoted via the CMS though. Recently, they've been pushing the issue more and now it's come to us having to track all system dataset, as well as 3rd party product datasets and each one that's changed tie it back to a Change Package. Has anyone else ran into these types of issues and if so, how did you handle this. Does anyone have any method/product to do this? Re: Changes to the system/3rd party products
We will create a package for most changes that might have impact. It does not do the actual update to the dataset/member, but it's for documentation purposes. Re: Automating weight and/or CP changes
So if we have 4 CPs and I want to turn one off on a particular LPAR, I would be able to do this with CPM by issuing a command? or If I want to change the weights because we have different settings from night/day. Automating weight and/or CP changes
Does anyone know if it is possible to automate weight and/or CP changes. ex. We have been told by auditors that all of our JES2 JOBCLASSes should have COMMAND=VERIFY. This would protect from someone coding an unauthorized command in a JCL that could go undetected. Has anyone else ran into this type of problem and if so, how did you protect against it vs. coding COMMAND=VERIFY.
