Re: IBM Explorer for z/OS - installation problems?

2014-04-04 Thread Timothy Sipples
Several other plug-ins as/if you'd like: CICS, IMS, MQ, DB2, Debug Tool,
File Manager, Fault Analyzer, etc., etc.

By the way, if you want only the minimalist Eclipse environment sufficient
for then adding the plug-ins you wish (including the Explorer for z/OS and
others), then you can grab what's called the Eclipse Platform Runtime
Binary and follow the manual installation instructions, adding the IBM
repository to install from there. I happen to prefer that installation
path, but your mileage may vary. Here's the direct link to the current
version (as I write this), but if you're reading this more than a month or
so after I wrote it, check the Eclipse Web site for a later version.

http://download.eclipse.org/eclipse/downloads/drops4/R-4.3.2-201402211700/#PlatformRuntime

This Eclipse download is roughly one quarter the size of the usual
Eclipse package. Several more platforms are available.

Dang - I should've thought of that. Thanks! Though it would be a bit
nicer if it said something, rather then just going away silently.

OK - so now that I have it installed, I can't see what it's useful
for. It has a notepad-like editor that can edit PDS members and
sequential datasets (as long as they're not too big, it warns), and
UNIX text files. It can submit JCL, and has a different JCL editor
that can highlight some JCL keywords.

Other than that, it seems to be just another installation of Eclipse,
with all its Java-ish goodness, and broken locale baggage.

Has anyone found it useful for something? Am I missing a secret menu
somewhere that has the good stuff?

IBM Explorer for z/OS - installation problems?

2014-04-02 Thread Tony Harminc
I thought I'd try it, but on my Windows 7 the installer just quietly
exits. Of course I can provide more details if I know what's
important, but have some of you installed it and had it Just Work? Any
pointers?

I downloaded it from
http://www-01.ibm.com/software/htp/cics/ibmexplforzos and tried
Scenario 1 - Install z/OS Explorer and Installation Manager.

Thanks...

Tony,
I also tried to follow what was documented in that url and had no luck.
In the end, I just installed IBM Installation Manager and then invoked
launchpad.exe and managed to successfully spin up z/OS Explorer.

Hope that helps.
