FILE001 contains a descrtion of each file on the tape, and is
separately downloadable. It would be an incredible amount of work for
Shmuel Golob to reduce them to smaller abstracts, but if you can round
up some volunteers, ...

ZIP-format files on CBT downloadable directly (new)

2015-06-01 Thread Sam Golob

Hi Folks,

I agree with Mike Schwab. I myself search CBTDOC.PDS with the PDS
command:

FIND : /string/ THEN(MEMLIST)

command, which is the equivalent of doing a FIND on a string in CBT File
001. So browse CBT File 001 and look for what you think you want. It
MAY be a bit more accurate than just guessing. The CBTDOC.PDS dataset
is obtained by breaking up File 001 into a pds, using the CBTUPD program
from CBT File 006. So doing a "PDS command" string search on the pds,
using it's FInd subcommand, is the equivalent of doing a plain string
FIND on the entire File 001. CBT FILE 001, while not being perfect, has
a lot more detail than the one-liners on the CBT page of www.cbttape.org.

I certainly hope this will help.

All the best of everything to all of you.

Sincerely,Sam

Download the FILE 1 ASCII to view the directory of all files.
Download the XMITMGR and install.
Download a file and view with XMITMGR.
If it does what you want, upload as binary.

Thanks! Thanks for all you do.

I know you are a volunteer and I know about volunteer organizations. I'm on the
Board of one and get very annoyed by the "you should's" from people who are
only peripherally involved.

But ... here goes. I for one would love to see some way to browse the
*high-level documentation* for a CBT file *directly* on a small ASCII-based
system. I find it cumbersome to

- search the CBT Web page for a possible candidate for some function I am
looking for
- download the file to my PC.
- upload it to my LPAR (remember to get the binary part right!)
- RECEIVE it
- browse the documentation

... only to find it does not do what I wanted. Delete the file from my PC and
two datasets from my LPAR. Lather, rinse, repeat.

Again ... not complaining. THANK YOU for maintaining the CBT tape.

Charles

Hi Folks,

I just made a new panel, accessible from www.cbttape.org, that will help
PC users. This screen will let you directly download some zip files from the
CBT Tape collection, which are otherwise cumbersome to get, unless you have a
z/OS system, or even if you have a z/OS system.
These several zip-format files were separated from the CBT Tape itself, and
made directly downloadable.

 The direct URL is: www.cbttape.org/zips.htm

To get to this panel from www.cbttape.org, just go to its home page, and
look for the "Zip Format Data" button on the left side.

Try it. You may like it. I'm sure I'll get suggestions for other files
to add to it.

For one thing, it'll make it very easy for users to get Phil Polchinski's
AMAZING calendar file!
