Re: Hercules; more information please.
Howard, There was a discussion about running the z/VM 5.3 Evaluation Edition on Hercules a few months back. I don’t think a definitive conclusion was reached. Here’s the relevant paragraph from the license agreement: Usage Restrictions z/VM Version 5 Release 3 Evaluation Edition operates on the IBM System z10 Enterprise Class (z10 EC) and IBM System z10 Business Class (z10 BC). The Program requires hardware that implements the IBM 64-bit z/Architecture in order to execute properly and therefore You are not authorized to install or use this Program on any machine that does not properly implement 64-bit z/Architecture. For information about specific z/VM machine requirements and programming requirements, see the z/VM: General Information manual, GC24-6095 Dennis If ye love wealth greater than liberty, the tranquility of servitude greater than the animating contest for freedom, go home from us in peace. We seek not your counsel, nor your arms. Crouch down and lick the hand that feeds you; May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that ye were our countrymen. -- Samuel Adams, 1 Aug 1776. Greetings all, I’ve just read through the posts on Hercules. I’ve heard about it but don’t know much about this software. Does it run on a PC in Windows, Linux…what? Is Hercules a shell for z/VM and/or z/OS and if so where does one get legal copies of both? Being that I’m still on the beach I’d like to know where I can find out more about Hercules and install it on my home PC. Being out since the end of March … thanks to lay offs at the bank I worked for isn’t much fun and a mind is terrible thing to loose. If I had something at home to fool around with, that would be great and perhaps keep some of my skill warm. Thanks

If you have no other common disk for local things, then the Y-disk would be appropriate. Rob

Thanks to all. After my brain began to work again I recalled that I had done this for perfkit, vswitch, etc., BUT since they all have templates available in the user directory, I guess it didn't stick to my 1970's college brain. And, yes I will continue to read the manuals, but just hoped someone had some insight. To build on what John and Bill have said, every product has to have some place to store its data (base files, service updates, build lists, etc.). Decades ago it was decided that each product would have its own user ID created to store the data. Each product could have its own installation/service scheme (SES and the Shared File System hadn't been invented yet). Further, it is possible to have multiple releases of a single product installed, and each has its own set of files. Keeping them separate is much easier when the disks are owned by separate user IDs. Oh yes.Even apart from tinkering with the last 12 bits. Very right about lower case: that gives us several on July 24th, 1973. Rob
Hercules 'HMC DVD-RAM support'
Has anyone tried the new HMC DVD-RAM support supposedly available in Hercules 3.06? There's no info at all on how to implement it After getting a zVM ramdisk loaded and logged into MAINT -- INSTDVD fails as it doesnt seem to find the CKDx files it's looking for which are on the DVD. I googled this to death and find a couple people complaining of the same thing, but no answers.. Since the release notes for 3.06 clearly indicate HMC DVD-RAM support -- I'm just curious if anyone has actually tried it -- I would expect a hercules.cnf option of some kind pointing to the dvd or mounted filesystem, but none is documented.Frustrating! It's there but no one seems to know how to make it work ;-) Scott p.s. Was going to post this on Hercules mailing list - but it requires a Yahoo id (no thanks). Thought this would be the next best place...
