Will it run ?

2011-04-06 Thread Graeme Moss

Hello Fellow Listers,

I have the opportunity to work on upgrading a VM/ESA 2.2 system to z/VM 5.4
on a new z10. I am wondering if I can run a copy of the 2.2 system under 5.4
on a z10 during the build phase ?

Cheers

VMVTAM

2011-01-12 Thread Graeme Moss

G'day Listers,

during a recent z/VM upgrade (in which VTAM stayed at V4R2) it was found
that source for our members contained in VTAMUSER LOADLIB was not carried
over from a previous upgrade. While we have been able to use the previous
version of the loadlib to keep VTAM going we want to recreate the source
members as they may be needed in a forthcoming rationalisation of systems.

Using the macros contained in the VTAM maclibs (e.g. USSTAB in VTAMBLD) the
code in VTAMUSER LOADLIB can be disassembled.

Has any-one done this before and is willing to share code ?

Cheers
Graeme

Re: Adding an CPOWNED volume

2010-03-04 Thread Graeme Moss
Just to clarify. If you didn't have volume in CPOWNED list in SYSTEM CONFIG at
last IPL and you have a spare SLOT (ie marked as RESERVED) then you need to run
DEFINE CPOWNED command to place the volume in the designated SLOT.

If you do not have a spare SLOT then you will need to update SYSTEM CONFIG and
IPL.

We are licensed to run z/VM 5.x on our z9. I do not believe there is a
restriction that it must be the host system in a lpar thus running lpar -
vm - linux - hercules - vm is quite legal. I am trying to asertain should
I bother going to our procurment people to ask them to talk to IBM about
licensing z/VM 6.1 for the z9.

We need the licence to be able to place an order so that z/VM 6.1 can be
downloaded.

Any production use of z/VM 6.1 would be on a z10.

I would like to get this sorted as it would probably reduce the pressure on
me to configure a new system with all the third party software to supply to
clients. Our marketing team would like to sell clients more z10. Also it
would be a bit of fun to do and I could justify the diversion into the land
of Linux.

electronic download of z/VM

2008-09-03 Thread Graeme Moss
Here is my experience with my testing of electronic delivery of z/VM. It may
be of use to others in similar situations or fellow listers may be able to
suggest improvements.

For electronic delivery IBM recommends the installer download the zip files
to their workstation, unzip and then as one option transfer to mainframe. I
work remotely, living in Australia and working on mainframes in US. I
connect to work via a satellite link and use vpn over that link. My download
quota is 3 Gig per month.

Given my broadband limits, I prefer to download directly to mainframe
Linux, unzip and then transfer back to VM. I already do this for CA
products.

I was surprised to find that I could not use a ftp client on the mainframe
to get the zip file so as the url prefix was http:// I thought of using a
text based web browser. I installed CHARLOTT and tried with the url only to
be told that the url of 309 characters was greater than allowed string size
of 256 bytes. I went to www.tinyurl.com and converted the IBM url into
something smaller. This time charlott was able to handle the link and I
downloaded the rsu portion of the order.

The next step will be to set up NFS between VM and Linux to transfer the
unzipped files back to VM.

The easiest way to improve this for me would be have ftp instructions as
occur when service is ordered because a) ftp could be used and b) the real
order which will include other products may be placed by admin staff and I
will have to teach them how to save the 309 character url to send to me.

Netstat command from VM:Operator

2008-07-31 Thread Graeme Moss

Mike,

As of z/VM 5.3 there has been a change in way to get NETSTAT working. See
Knowledge base article TEC437559 at CA Support Online.

At our site the NETSTAT command is trapped by VMOPER and a msg sent to a DSM
running WAKEUP.
The DSM sets SECUSER to the requester (OPERATOR) issues the command then
sets SECUSER OFF

Here is a code snippet
do forever
 say 'Waiting for requests'
 'wakeup ( iucvmsg'
if rc = 6 then leave
 if rc = 5 then
   do
   pull request
parse var request . 'MSG' sender command
   call doit
   end
end

doit:

command = strip(command,'B')
if subword(command,1,1) = USER= then
 do
 sender = subword(command,2,1)
 command = subword(command,3)
 end

say date() time() 'Issuing' command 'for' sender

'cp set secuser' sender
command
'cp set secuser off'

return

This happens for any linked and accessed mdisk not just
MAINT.

If I do LINK MAINT 190 120 RR followed by ACCESS 120 Z
instead of VMLINK the S disk is retained.

Am I missing a VMLINK parameter to cause the existing link
and access to be retained ?

Hi Clifford,

I follow instructions Part 4. Service procedure in GC24-6099-00 z/VM V5.1
Guide for Automated Installation and Service available from
http://www.vm.ibm.com/pubs/index.html and use SERVICE and PUT2PROD execs.

I am trying to apply a PTF to my z/VM 5.1 system

I received the PTF from an IBM FTP site, I received three files:

ftp4385.txt è I received this as an ASCII file

The next two files were defined as binary f 1024

  vlst4385.bin

  vptf4385.bin

Next I FTPed the above files to my z/VM system in the same above format

After getting them to my test VM system I DETERSE the files using the
following syntax:

  ‘DETERSE VLST4385 BIN A VLST4385 SERVLINK A’

  ‘DETERSE VPTF4385 BIN A VPTF4385 SERVLINK A’

  NOTE: No errors here.

I get errors when I try to install the product envelop.

When I enter the following command I get the following error message:

a.. ‘VMFINS INSTALL INFO (NOMEMO ENV VPTF4385’

I followed the directions carefully but I missed something.

Restricted access to Virtualization Basics LVC

2008-01-03 Thread Graeme Moss
Listers,

I am trying to watch replay of live virtual class for
Virtualization Basics http://www.vm.ibm.com/education/lvc/
but get an error Restricted Event - You cannot attend the
event because it is restricted to invited guests only.

I have been able to watch the 5.3 Intro and 5.3 Performance
Update with no problems. Any-one know how to get invited to
Virtualization Basics.

Re: Service Methodology Query

2007-11-27 Thread Graeme Moss
I received a private reply from IBM so am including the meat
of the email but without the contact details

The first PUT2PROD could be skipped, however the two
invocations of the service exec are necessary. The only
time you can invoke the service exec with multiple envelope
names is if they are part of a logical set ( VMSES format
stacked tapes), as is the case with a multiple volume RSU.
The service recommendations from the bucket are delivered as
COR service and requires a specific invocation of the
service exec with that envelope name. The service exec keeps
a cumulative list of actions required by PUT2PROD. This
allows multiple service sessions to be followed by a single
PUT2PROD.

Subject: Service Methodology Query

Hi,

I have downloaded RSU 0702 for z/VM 5.2 and also the PTFs
mentioned in upgrade ZVM520 subset 0702RSU document.

These were applied serially using the sequence of commands
SERVICE ALL
PUT2PROD
SERVICE ALL
PUT2PROD

My query of you is
1)Could the first PUT2PROD be left out ?
2)Could both lots of PTFs be included on the one
SERVICE invocation ?

Thanks in advance
Graeme

VM Magic alternative

2007-09-19 Thread Graeme Moss
G'day Listers,

We have VM Magic from SDI running on an old system which we
wish to upgrade but VM Magic does not run in 64 bit mode.

VM Magic is being used to emulate 9345 dasd. There are
applications that have device type coded in programs which
would make conversion to 3390 difficult.

Does the list have any suggestions on what we can do ?

Thanks in advance

PIPEDDR TERSE and other stuff

2007-07-11 Thread Graeme Moss
Greetings Listers,

PIPEDDR can use TERSE or PACK stages for compression or use
no compression.. It only fails if TERSE option is specified
and the stage is not available. It is written so it does not
rely on TERSE

I have used PIPEDDR with PACK option to transfer complete
3390s from one data centre to another and it works well. It
saved the delay of waiting for a courier to take a
cartridge.

Just an aside, I thought I would update the code so it used
standard PIPES but when I did that TCPIP packets were lost.
Maybe TCPCLIENT and TCPLISTEN have different code or maybe I
screwed it up or maybe it was timing.

Another aside. Thanks to the author Bruce Hayden publishing
the code I was able to use PIPEDDR as a model and instead of
using TRACKREAD and TRACKWRITE to read and write dasd I used
READER and URO to read and write spool making a very simple
NJETCP link.

zVM 5.3 Delivery query

2007-06-12 Thread Graeme Moss
Hi Listers,

I have been reading the zVM 5.3 GI manual and FAQ about how
5.3 can be ordered, delivered and installed.

page 20 of the GI states that DVD can be moved to a mdisk
and then installed from the mdisk. This provides more
options for customer environments and can facilitate
electronic delivery of z/VM

The answer to the last question on page 53 of the FAQ has a
note saying that The z/VM base operating system cannot be
delivered using Internet delivery of ShopzSeries

Since the note in the FAQ is in an answer talking about SDO
does it mean that the z/VM base can't be delivered on its
own but can be if part of a SDO ?
In other words will an order need to specify physical media
(DVD or 3490) to get z/VM 5.3 ?

Hi Dennis,

I have a feeling that when I follow my cheatsheet below that
during rebuilds when applying maintenance the rebuilds fail
due to storage already in use. Haven't tested but
maintenance goes on fine on systems without the increased

I'd like to add a few thousand help files (for VM:Manager)
to MAINT 19D.
What's the proper way to do this? If I just COPYFILE them
to the disk,
HELP works, but PUT2PROD chokes the next time it tries to
build the help
segment. Could the segment be getting full, or is there a
VMSES command
that should be issued to add the files, so that all the
proper VMSES
control files get updated?

High Level Assembler

2007-03-07 Thread Graeme Moss
Fellow Listers,

I have been asked if we need High Level Assembler.

We have three exits that I know of
- VMSECURE but this can be done in REXX.
- RACF (I have read CMS Assembler is OK)
- RSCS - still to be examined

Does any-one know of a product that we need HLA HLATK for.
We run zVM 5.2 with CA VM:Manager suite.

Thanks

Re: BFS Timestamp

2006-09-18 Thread Graeme Moss
I have just tried the native command 'OPENVM listfile' which
gives the same timestamp as for the CMS file. Therefore it
appears that PIPELINES is changing the displayed timestamp.

I have read HELP PIPE BFSSTATE and there is no mention of
the displayed time being altered.

Should I report it to IBM ?

I have a file in SFS which is the subject of OPENVM PUT with
options REP and OLDD.

When I look at the directory using BFSLIST the time stamp is
4 hours ahead of the timestamp of the file in SFS.

Q TIMEZONE gives EDT West 04.00.00 Active.

My question is Is the BFS timestamp in UTC?

(I have also tried OPENV PUT without option OLDD (defaults
to NEWDATE) and
OPENV GET with OLDD and they seem to confirm BFS is in UTC
and SFS EDT)

If the BFS timestamp is set to UTC, is it adjustable ? Where
can I learn more about it ?

Thanks

Thanks Rob, for the info about UTC as well as where to find

The real help comes with PIPE HELP instead:
   4. The time of last modification is reported in a format
that is suitable
for sorting. The time is UTC; no timezone offset is
applied.

ICKSADSF

2006-06-21 Thread Graeme Moss
Stand-Alone ICKDSF seems to only be orderable via UK15426
and UK15427 as documented in II01692.

In the dim past I seem to remember generating standalone
programs by punching a three-card loader then punching the
module before closing the punch. The punch file was then
read into a cms file and afterwards using a movefile to put
it on tape.

Does this work for ICKDSF and if it does where can I find
instructions ?

Should I even worry about keeping ICKDSF and ICKSADSF in
sync ?

Thanks
Graeme
