Re: hipersockets on a VM layer 2 vswitch

Yes but the layer 2 vswitch is running on z/VM ver. 5.4.
Does this mean we will need to set up a layer 2 hipersocket on the z/OS
side as well? Thank you Mark, yes we are running z/OS ver. 1.10 on the
LPAR running the TSMTCS app.

You need a very modern z/OS for layer 2 connections to work. You don't
say what level of z.OS, but I think it has to be minimum 1.10 if not
1.11.

The choice of layer 2 or 3 depends on how you configure the qeth driver.
See the Device Driver book on DeveloperWorks for details on that. When
using a VSWITCH, the guest must conform to the type of VSWITCH (IP=layer

Sorry if I wasn't clear: Layer 2 and Layer 3 connections of any sort can
share an OSA. So, yes, two VSWITCHes can share an OSA without regard to
the layer-ness of the VSWITCHes.

Greetings,

I saw this post and would like to get some verification on running both layer 2
and layer 3 on the same OSA.

So we can now have say a z/VM running Linux guest on a layer 2 to an OSA along
with a layer 3 TCP stack on the same z/VM using the same OSA?

Would we be able to also have other LPARS either z/VM or z/OS share this same
OSA with layer 3 as well ?

From my understanding you had to have OSPF to share the OSA’s with other LPARS
( mainly with the z/OS )

We currently have the new Z10 box

Anson,

From the top of my head (I can't verify anymore, no access to z900 lpars
left), both layer 2 and layer modi should be supported (if you are current
enough on your OSA microcode level).
But what won't work on a z900, is sharing the osa with layer 2 and layer 3
traffic. As I recall, the first to connect to the OSA could set the mode (2 or
3) and all other shared connections have to use the same mode (just like the
portname).
The restriction got lifted with z990, there you can use the same shared OSA,
mixing layer 2 and layer 3 connections.

Yes the OSA does support the Layer 2. It took us some time and effort
but it does work. Are you setting this up so that it allows you the
ability to move
Linux guest from one VM to another while retaining it's IP address?
If so you will need to start assigning MAC addresses and keeping track
of that as well.

This is what we used to set the layer 2 OSA

You will need to set the group:

You will also need to set the group:

CP SET PORT GROUP GLAN515 JOIN F###

CP DEF VSWITCH VSWF### ETH VLAN 515 RDEV F### NAT 515 PORTN OSAPORT

CP SET VSWITCH VSWF### GRANT X X = guest name or user

note you will need to have a LAN to point too.

It fails during the re-boot of the install when it starts to perform the

Russel,

Have you been successful with the install over an OSA defined on a
layer 2 network?

We are running z/VM 5.4 with the latest PTF's and SUSE 10 SP2 trying
to perform the install using the IBM scripts.
It is failing every time during the re-boot phase of the install.
If you are asking about the subject paper, no we did not. We used a

I thought there were previous threads describing the correct PARMFILE

No real trick to it.

First, make sure you have everything setup properly on the FTP server.

On the same VM as your FTP server, log on to CMS, and try a FTP.
This makes sure your FTP server is setup properly.

Then, on the same VM as you are doing the Linux install, logon to CMS
and try the FTP.
If successful, you have a good server and good communications.

As installed, the FTP server is not configured for what you want to
do.
The following is a snipit of the changes I have to make:

Install vsFTPd ftp server
Must be done to be an install server.
When done, don't need winscp for FTP transfers, but it will

Has anyone ever successfully built a Linux guest under z/VM on a layer

Are there any tricks to get the installs to work?

The theory is that with the layer 2 network in place we will be able
to
move Linux guest from one z/VM to another and potentially move from
one
box to another box as long as the OSA's on them are connected to the
same layer 2 network and that the OSA's are defined the same so that
the
Linux guest can retain their IP address's no matter which box they are
running.

Supposedly for load balancing and when maintenance is required on the
z/VM systems there will be minimal outages on the Linux guests.

Hopefully I have made some sense.

Hello everyone,

I am please to announce an updated paper Sharing and maintaining SLES
10 SP2 Linux under z/VM, and an associated tar file with scripts and
configuration files.

The paper is available on the Web at:
http://linuxvm.org/present/misc/ro-root-S10.pdf
The tar file is available at:
http://linuxvm.org/present/misc/ro-root-S10.tgz

The other authors are Steve Womer, Rick Troth and Kyle Black.

This is an update to the IBM Redpaper published in 2/08 with a similar
title. The updates in this paper are as follow:
-) Based on z/VM 5.4 (previously 5.3)
-) Based on SLES 10 SP2 (previously SLES 10)
-) Linux scripts and z/VM REXX EXECs added/updated
-) Linux script to create read-only system now named mnt2rogld.sh
-) Disk space of each Linux system increased
-) /var/lib/rpm/ is bind-mounted read-only over read-write /var/ file
system
-) More detailed section on maintaining Linux

There is a counterpart paper based on RHEL coming in hopefully about a
month. Watch this space.

Thanks to many people who made this possible - just to name a few: Brian
France, Dom Depasquale, Carlos Ordonez, Brad Hinson, Mark Post, David
Boyes, Ernie Horn, Steve Shultz and Hongjie Yang.

We had hoped to also add a section on DCSSs and NSSs but ran out of
time. Maybe it can still be added.

Enjoy! Feedback is welcome.

No real trick to it.

First, make sure you have everything setup properly on the FTP server.

On the same VM as your FTP server, log on to CMS, and try a FTP.
This makes sure your FTP server is setup properly.

Then, on the same VM as you are doing the Linux install, logon to CMS

If successful, you have a good server and good communications.

Thanks,

We were able to get past the FTP error. The issue was within the layer 2

VSWITCH definitions. We needed to have the VLAN and the NAT LAN
statement set to the same LAN name ( 515 ).

Now we are able to ping the VM machine on the layer 2 along with the
linux guest when the first phase of the install has completed. Now we
are running into another problem which seems to be with the Linux
install script issue working on the layer 2 network.

The first phase does runs, but the phase 2 part fails. Below are the
console messages leading up to the failure and the VNC connection error.
