Re: Attaching a real scsi device to a guest

2009-04-24 Thread Kris Buelens
I think there was some reasoning: all directory statements defining a
device (MDISK, SPOOL, CONSOLE, SPECIAL, DEDICATE)) have the virtual
address as the second word. But yes, then LINK is the exception.

2009/4/23 James Stracka (DHL US) james.stra...@dhl.com:
I always say to myself we are defining Virtual devices so the first UCB
is the virtual one on a DEDICATE, just as it is on an MDISK, GRAF or
 SPECIAL.

Then IBM allows LINK which is backwards, but we all know that one! And,
 both UCBs are virtual, duh.

It might have been helpful if between the two UCBs was the word USING.

 e.g.

 DEDICATE vucb USING rucb

Attaching a real scsi device to a guest

2009-04-23 Thread Bauer, Bobby (NIH/CIT) [E]
We have been fortunate to obtain a small SAN device to play with in place of
the 3390's that we are currently using to run z/VM and our Redhat Linux guest.
I've been able to dynamically attach, configure a file system and mount it. The
attach command went like:
ATTACH to LSSB as 0900

I want to add this to USER DIRECT but a DEDICATE will not work and I don't see
how MDISK will. Can somebody enlighten me?

BTW, in order to preserve your sanity (if it's not too late!) you can
replace
   DEDICATE 0900
with
   COMMAND ATTACH TO * 0900

This works even on class G users since COMMANDs execute with all privilege

Did not realize there was a 'COMMAND' statement for USER DIRECT but there it is

Yep ! got that straight !

Was just saying that it would have been easier to just have a copy of
the error message you were getting (probably HCPATR040E Device 0900
does not exist) and someone would have probably poked you in the right
direction straight away ! Just is/does/will not work(ing) is usually a
