You can just go to HMC and do a PCHID reassign from bad one to a good one in same or in another Escon Card. IOCP is complaining because you are trying to assign more than 8 paths to a Control Unit. (See Machine Limits appendix.) The service rep will use PCHID/CHPID reassignment on the SE to logically move the CHPID associated with the failing port (PCHID) to a good port on the *same card*. Check out the IBM System z Connectivity Handbook (redbook). It has an extensive discussion on ESCON channel sparing. "Reassigning the selected channel path identifier (CHPID) to another partition could not be completed. The selected CHPID is not reconfigurable. Select a reconfigurable CHPID and try the operation again."

The HMC or SE has the ability to do this, or used to so a ESCON port could be sparred over to another port. That way you did not have to code it in the IOCP.
