Just for clarification, it's opinion, not luck.
In my *opinion*, these cyberdraculae aren't necessarily suitable for Linux.

I said rare.
Linux ... without VM ... rare. Not never, just rare. Sheesh!

Is there a free evaluation copy of Linux for z/VM?

2011-04-04 Thread Hughes, Jim
Is there a free evaluation copy of Linux for z/VM? There are rumors
from those flying at 50,000 feet that we may be asked questions about
Linux on z/VM.

On the other hand, would it be a proper use of this forum to post the
questions here or is there a Linux for z/VM list?

Hi, Jim.

Yes there are free evaluation copies of Linux for z/VM available from
the major vendors, plus there are non-commercial versions of Linux for
s390Debian, Fedora, Centos, for example. I can point you in the
right direction if you would like further information.

Yes, the is also a Linux on S/390 mailing list that discusses running
Linux on both an LPAR and as a guest of z/VM. To subscribe to the

There is a mailing list for Linux on zlinux-...@vm.marist.edu

Both Novell (SLES) and RedHat (RHEL) can be downloaded at their respective
web sites.. you'll be looking for the 's390x' binaries. You can download
and use for free (respecting the various GPLs, etc).. and then purchase if
you want support and access to updates, etc. There are also other flavors
(e.g. CentOS) but if you likely want to stick with SLES or RHEL. Most
government agencies I've worked with have been using RHEL on both the
mainframe and other platforms.. but that's just from personal experience - I
haven't done a survey or anything :) Usually, for ease of migration and
support - you stick with the distro you use on the distributed platforms..

In a word - sharing.

In LPAR mode you can run 1 linux per LPAR. Under VM can share the memory,
CPU/IFL, DASD and run lots of linux.

Re: Is there a free evaluation copy of Linux for z/VM?

2011-04-04 Thread Richard Troth
Being the purist, I appreciate that Linux on z can run without z/VM.
However ...

The value of virtualization is still not recognized in a lot of places
and situations. D/R preparedness is a biggie. One D/R plan has most
of your app-hosting systems run virtual. So when you bring things up
on the recovery HW, the app servers actually see NO CHANGE. Ahhh...
But that's just one example.

And then there's what Mark Pace said: sharing. Linux is a good system
and getting better all the time. But it simply cannot compete with
the scalability and robustness of z/VM for sharing physical resources.
And the insertion loss of running VM (eg: with just one guest,
instead of running that guest native) is so low compared to other
hypervisors. It's good that native Linux is an option, but it's rare
that I would recommend it.
