You can just go to HMC and do a PCHID reassign from bad one to a good
one in same or in another Escon Card.

Re: INPUT/OUTPUT CONFIGURATION

2011-07-21 Thread Davis, Larry (National VM/VSE Capability)
The HMC or SE has the ability to do this, or used to so a ESCON port could be
sparred over to another port.
That way you did not have to code it in the IOCP.

you can do a channel reassign at the HMC level also

Reassigning the selected channel path identifier (CHPID) to another
partition could not be completed. The selected CHPID is not
reconfigurable. Select a reconfigurable CHPID and try the operation
again.

IOCP is complaining because you are trying to assign more than 8 paths to
a Control Unit. (See Machine Limits appendix.) The service rep will use
PCHID/CHPID reassignment on the SE to logically move the CHPID associated
with the failing port (PCHID) to a good port on the *same card*.

Check out the IBM System z Connectivity Handbook (redbook). It has an
extensive discussion on ESCON channel sparing.
