Actually it seems to be one of those quotes where its hard to pin down
 who really said it:

Here's another good quote (Gail Ivey uses it on her posts):

The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do
nothing. -- Edmund Burke 1729-1797

It takes a strong person to stand up to things that are considered the norm
but that may actually be hurting the horse.

Not just anyone can do it. Probably most people can't. Good men are
swimming upstream, walking in the opposite direction of the parade, fighting
the crowd. Not
only that, but good men take abuse from smart, highly educated, yet
ignorant people.

Not everyone, may be not even more than a few, will take the chance, to stand
up for the horse.

I am proud to say that we have more than a few on this list!!

[IceHorses] The Half-Pass

2007-02-16 Thread Judy Ryder
Descriptions of the Half-Pass:

The half-pass is a lateral movement where the horse moves both straight and
sideways simultaneously along an imaginary diagonal line.

The horse is bent towards the motion around the rider's inside leg.

The neck is bent so that the horse's outside ear is on the same line as the
inside shoulder and the head is at the vertical.

The horse should be slightly bent round the inside leg of the rider in order
to give more freedom and mobility to the shoulders.

Unlike the easier leg-yield, the horse is bent in the direction of travel,
slightly around the rider's inside leg.

They keep your butt relatively clean.

They aren't as slippery as a bare horse's back.

If you want to ride longer and you weigh more than a flea, you can add a
spinal pad to add a little protection for the horse's back. Maybe other
reasons, but those are what comes to my mind right off the bat.

Re: [IceHorses] Saddle Measurement Boards

2007-02-16 Thread Judy Ryder

Of course, that is not the only measurement you need to have for a saddle.
 It's 3D, so there's more than just a few.

The saddle will fit one way when it is placed on the horse and the horse is
just standing there.

The saddle can actively impact the horse when there is a rider in it, and
when the horse is moving.

Let's see how this works: Can you get a series of three pictures... one of
the horse, from the side, just standing, with no tack (halter OK); one
picture from the same side with the saddle on; one picture from the same
side, with the rider in the saddle (rider: wear minimum, tight clothes so
the saddle fit can be seen).

Re: [IceHorses] Creating Templates of Horse's Back

2007-02-16 Thread Judy Ryder

CREATING TEMPLATES OF YOUR HORSE'S BACK FOR SADDLE FITTING

 By Dr. Kerry Ridgway

More from Dr. Ridgway:

Saddles are for obvious reasons built symmetrically, so when placed on a
horse with muscle hypertrophy (enlargement) on one side, the tree rotates
diagonally into a position in order to establish similar contact pressure on
both sides of the wither pocket.

Torque of the saddletree, however, may make contact and place excessive
pressure on one side of the lightly covered thoracic spines and leaves more
open space on the opposing side.

Pressure exerted in areas close to bone (with little muscle covering) result
in a significant magnification of the pressure. The result of this
unilateral pressure is pain, and loss of ability to perform bending and
lateral movements.

The pressure can also create chiropractic joint issues in the thoracic
vertebrae of the withers. The shoulder that is bulged laterally may strike
the edge of the
panel or bar as the scapula moves through its range of motion. This can
create significant muscle bruising and serves to further twist the saddle.

Because the opposite shoulder typically has more slope, the saddle may tend
to fall or slip to the sloping shoulder side of the horse.

This is a second reason for pressure on the thoracic spinous processes.

The problem of slipping to the side is particularly troubling if the croup
is also involved and is lower on the same side. This is can occur when a
high/low conditions exists in the hind feet as well.

More often, however when the horse is observed in motion, one side of the
croup raises more on one side than the other it relates to, muscle balance,
chiropractic or joint issues in the hind limbs. Regardless of cause, it
creates an even worse scenario for slippage when combined with shoulder
asymmetry.

RE: [IceHorses] Creating Templates of Horse's Back

2007-02-16 Thread Robyn Hood
Hi Judy,
This is another good article by Dr Ridgway. While most horses tend to have
diagonal lowness (low shoulder and diagonally low hip) and that makes the
saddle slightly easier to fit, it is a bigger challenge when the horse is
laterally low - low shoulder and hip same side. In these cases the rider
will constantly feel the saddle going over to one side. That is made even
worse if the riders collapsed side is the same as the horse's low side. You
can tell which side collapsed (or is contracted through the ribs) because
that on that side the rider may have a tendency to lose her stirrup or have
it feel a different length than the other side.

And, what about the 'lucky ones' who are too small to wear a bra?

[IceHorses] Vosal

2007-02-16 Thread Karen Thomas
What is a vosal? Is that another word for bosal, or a misspelling of bosal?
Or is it something different?

I believe the difference is that a bosal is a stiffer piece of equipment,
made from lariat rope (and may or may not have a wire within it), and a
vosal is a more flexible piece of equipment, made more from rope or nylon.

RE: [IceHorses] The Half-Pass

2007-02-16 Thread Karen Thomas
Unlike the easier leg-yield, the horse is bent in the direction of
travel, slightly around the rider's inside leg.

I have been surprised how rarely anyone I've encountered with Icelandic's
has talked about leg-yield, but how often I've hear trainers talking about
getting the horses to do half-pass or shoulder-in. I have taught most of my
horses to leg-yield, but not many pleasure horses I know are really prepared
to do an actual half-pass or shoulder-in. It takes time for the horse - and
the rider - to get conditioned and learn to do either of them correctly.
