RE: [IceHorses] Dog available
Anneliese, Here are some pictures of pit bulls. I did some searching and blue eyes generally aren't desired in the breed, but they do occur. If the dog is young, her head won't have achieved its full broadness - note the picture of the puppy on this page - picture 1A. http://www.apbtconformation.com/NEECF.htm Note that the white chest and leg markings are really common in that breed. We once picked up a "lab mix" puppy who grew up to be apparently a full pit bull. (She was mostly black with just a little white on her chest.) I had no idea how different the dogs look when they are young. I can't say that the dog in the picture is indeed a pit bull - a lot depends on her age. But, I sure wouldn't rule out her being at least a cross, possibly even pure. Maybe not, but it was the first breed that crossed my mind when I saw her picture. Of course, a single picture can be misleading. Is she black or chocolate? She's young? About how big? If she's under about 3 months, the blue eyes could still turn amber. We do fear that Linda's property is gone, although that has not been confirmed. I continue to pass all your wonderful information, thoughts and concerns along, and they are most appreciated. Will continue to report as I have info. Hug your horses today and ask them too to send thoughts to their fellow creatures... I know they are listening. Love, Gail __ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Re: [IceHorses] State of Emergency in CA
We have 2 active lava flows going on right now1 really is not an issue for us, but there is a new one that started a few months back...We have been able to see the RED glow at night from our round pen.It probably will not come towards our land, but it can cut off our highway that connects us to Hilo (if the rate of flow stays the same, it would take 4 years to cross the highway, its about 6 miles from the highway now...however if the lava changes from A'a which is slow moving to the very fast pahoehoe, it could cross the highway in a matter of days) ..we would not be able to get out of here to work.we would have to relocate on the other side of the flow so we could get to our clients. If that happens, one unfortunate thing is that our road, which is the historic old railroad from the 1800's would be used as an evacuation route, it would have major upgrades and eventually get paved.I would be saddened.we would move. But the price of our land would go up immensleywe would probably move to Florida, a very horse friendly state. Anyway, we are always prepared, I have an extra inverter, an old trailer that is UGLY, but can carry our horses and other belongings, with the truck and trailer I could move what I neededwe also have a Berky light water filter, it is a BIG countertop model, it will filter any type of water for drinking...that will defintley come with us..but we live in a state of being prepared, I guess thats what of the side benefits of living off grid.I could install my solar panels on my trailer roof and live out of that if I had to! If you've never seen what a lava flow can do, imagine everything in its path is burned, then covered up with HARD rock. (sometimes up to 20' in depth) Nothing can grow for years.and years. Of course I can live with this, but to live where there are hurricanes every year would be hard for me...weird huh? The Earth is a living organsism. [IceHorses] fire/room for a few horses
I am difficult to get to, but if anyone needs a place for their horses, I can make room. I have about 25 acres in the mountains between Tehachapi and Lake Isabella, in Kern County. About 50 miles east of Bakersfield and 40 miles west of Tehachapi. I am a native Californian, so I have survived many many fires. I have only had to evacuate 2 times in about 65 years. Wildfires scare me to death. I once saw a fire start in Agoura, and make it to Malibu in two hours. I have pictures of when the fire started and it was horrible. My prayers are with all who are running from the fires. I know it is a nightmare for you. Janet Westminster Caliente, CA 93518 661 867-6101
[IceHorses] a funny
I just thought of something funny that someone said this weekend. I rode with my friend and her dad, who I have ridden with for years and years. We were talking about Tivar being a "finished" horse like my Jaspar, and how nice it is when a horse is like that, reliable, can take them anywhere etc. and he said yes, it was such a loss that his horse died of snakebite because she was a horse like Jaspar, that we rode, together many times, when jaspar was a heathen and his Sophie was a heathen, and between us both we broke many bones. But nicole (autistic) pipes up and says "you know on the highway when someone dies they put up a little white cross. they oughta put up little white crosses on riding trails where people have fallen off their horses!" and her dad says "well if they did that where me and janice have ridden Nicole it would look like arlington cemetery. No one could have room to ride their horses on the trails for all the little white crosses." hahahahha that was a good one. bless his heart. and now he is riding a complete maniac heathen arabian mare. I had to spend the whole ride making sure teev did not get too close cause she would fire off a kick at him. sigh. it will take at least a year, most likely two, of constant riding and work for her to become a "finished" horse. I've been in contact with a friend in Idyllwyld, I think she is ok where she is, but has no electricity, maybe it will be repaired by 7 tonight. She says she has been sitting in the dark all night, with her wolf by the door and her iguana in bed with her for heat, she says it's cold up there on top of the mountain. Very nerve wracking, even for those not exactly in the path, you never know where the fire will spread to next. I remember the 94 earthquake in LA, I was on the far end of the county, but for a minute I thought my little house was going to come down on me. I was shocked when the news went on, I'll never forget it, a newscaster came on the air, not really ready for tv, all shaken, and then when the pictures started to come in, the collapsed freeways, it was crazy, and the people in the middle of it didn't even realize everything that was going on until later. Re: [IceHorses] State of Emergency - Anneliese's stray
Incidentally, I have another stray I have to find a good home for. People dump them on the lonely road behind our property. The last one was an English Setter (very sweet bird dog) and Karen got her. This one is a young female Blue Heeler type. I don't know enough to tell if she is pure-bred or not. If she's half the dog that Connie is, then she'll make a wonderful dog. Connie is sweet and gorgeous. Speaking of my crew of cast-offs, I need to get a new picture of Frank the pug. He just got home from the vet's where he had his last vaccination. He was about five pounds when we got him...and he's 13.5 now. He's gotten so HUGE! He gets his surgery next week. Karen Thomas, NC

I will elbow him hard, jerk his lead, take a sharp thumb and jam it in his chest and make him walk backwards several steps, every step talk grouchy to him. I know that sounds mean. if i did it to any of my other horses they would be devastated, but I have to be MORE mean to him to get his attention, but once I've lost him, he's lost. Just dangerous. Also, another thing is if one training method isnt working, try another. That was a breakthru I had with Fox. being firm was making him worse, so I switched to lots of sweet talk and rewarding with treats. Tivar will do ANYTHING for me if he smells a treat in my pocket. I am sure he fantasizes the whole ride about the juicy moment he will be able to have it :) He will reach and sniff me and when he smells it, relax, lick and chew, cause man, he knows that treat has his name on it at the end when he has been a good boy :) haha. What I am doing with stonewall isnt working. I am going to try parelli now with him. He needs confidence. But any time one of my horses starts walking over me I jam a sharp thumb in the chest and make them walk back a few steps. But sounds like you tried that :) I dont know what to do about the buddy sour thing! Stonewall has that but luckily it isnt one particular horse as long as he isnt alone he is fine. Hi Janice, I guess I have the same disease. I fell apart yesterday as I watched CNN and the clip they had of some horses that they let go out of corrals and these were from a boarding stable. The horses were running into the hills like a wild herd in absolute panic. I swore I'd never have more animals than I can move to safety. We continue to pray for all. I plan on going out to my boarding stable today and hugging allot on my boys. One who just came from Escondido. It's very dry and suppose to be 90 here today. Bernadette

>>> Dirty water won't hurt them, as long as it's not scummy. When it's time to clean the tank, I use a small sump pump to pump the water out onto *the* lone tree that's in the pasture, near the barn. The water isn't wasted, the tree gets watered, and I can scrub out the tank. When we had the long power outage from a huge ice storm back in 2000, we were very limited in where we could get water for the horses, since so much of the county was also without power, and the roads were a horrible mess. We got some of the horse's water from the pond near our house. Man, it was a CHORE to haul enough up in buckets - the ice was too thick and slippery for even the tractor we had then to cross, so we had to walk it on very slick ice, one or two buckets at a time. But, it worked. It reminded me that many horses DO regularly drink from ponds. I'd still love to be able to dump my water troughs daily, or at least every other day, but I have to be realistic. Janice, It is your compassionate heart that causes you to grieve for the unprotected. I had a woman who did the hiring for the drivers who drive the Special Ed buses in our district. She said she chose people who kept animals. She apologized for how that sounded, but she said the same desire to nurture and protect usuallly carried over into all areas of a person's life. If you ever really needed to do some family nursing, you'd be in there with both boots. Nancy

I saw a clip on the news this morning in CA of a pickup truck with 3 dogs in the back and a horse tied to the bumper winding down a road with bumper to bumper traffic. That and all of our list friends dealing with this really brings it home. It's so frutsrating to not be able to do anything to help. All of you are in my thoughts. This did motivate me to review our emergency evacuation plan. I have a list of places to go with the animals in all directions, I have emergency water always ready to go. Since I don't have a trailer, I have a list of people with trailers to call that have agreed to come if I needed them, I have dog and cat crates ready, I have food ready, I have a list of all the things I would need to throw in a bag to take, etc. But the one thing I realized I forgot was to plan for the humans so I sat down and made that list, too. OC fairgrounds are closed. There is a wonderful place in Winchester (inland) that is well out of any harm's way.I sent you his phone number by private mail yesterday. I still can take 5 or 6 horses and dogs, too. Bedroom is now open (was being used last night for an evacuee). Gail, The info I gave you about possibly evacuating to Trabuco Canyon...forget it. I've been talking to friends there and they voluntarily evacuated their horses yesterday as there is a fire burning in nearby Silverado Canyon (set by an arsonist!!) and very near Cook's Corner. I'm just thinking off the top of my head of coastal stables...some other possible evacuation areas are: Laguna Woods Equestrian Center (the old Leisure World still has a stable and is accepting horses) OC Fairgrounds in Costa Mesa Hansen Dam Equestrian Center (above LA) LA Equestrian Center near Burbank El Toro Stables? (the old marine base might still have their stables/corrals/pens up - it's in Irvine). Huntington Beach has a stables Nellie Gail Ranch in Mission Viejo It seems that it might be better to stick close to the coast as you drive away from the fires. My prayers are with you all...what a terrible fright this is. Trish

I saw them interview someone on tv who's house was burned and they said where they were was "horse country" and it showed horses running around crazy with flames all around. I felt terrible! I dont know whats wrong with me. I have a disorder I guess. After hurricane katrina I had a brother who lost everything he had worked for all his life and his family had to go separate ways and live different places for a whole year, then the victims displaced began to move into our area, living in RVs in the walmart parkinglot for godssakes. I felt bad for them, terrible, I helped all I could. but then one day on the front page of the newspaper, it was a half page picture of a little scuffy dog with a collar, in the middle of devastation. So obviously hurt and confused and wondering where his people were, I collasped in grief over it. I still can't picture his little face without tearing up. I guess I have a mental disorder they havent named yet, st. francis complex or something! So many people, like Nancy, do so much good for fellow humans, but nursing people scares me.
