My old Arab is Insulin Resistant and the vet says he may have Cushings too. She said to watch him very carefully and check his hooves in the mornings before I turn him out. She said he could get Laminitis very easily and it would not be anything I'm doing as I have him on a pretty low carb diet already... That's what I was talking about, Ferne. Even with the best of care, there will be times when horses will develop laminitis. Managing diet and exercise can help and maybe even prevent some cases, but there's a limit to how much a person can do. I'm very happy that so much research is underway on this topic - it's amazing how much is known now compared to 10-12 years ago when we had our first cases here. [IceHorses] Hi ! I'm new, too
Hi ! I've been reading the list for a month or so, and thought I'd better introduce myself. My name is Cindy, and I live near Algonquin Park, in Ontario (Canada !), with my family, 25 dogs (we dogsled !) and 4 horses. I've just bought (and am patiently awaiting delivery) of a Barefoot London saddle. I also purchased a Dixie Midnight pad to go under the London and the Physio pad. Has anyone used the Dixie Midnight pads ? Have any experience with them ? I recently received loan of a gorgeous Icey gelding, and needed a saddle that would fit him, plus I needed a saddle that would fit at least one of our other 3 horses. I'd been toying with the idea of a treeless saddle for quite a while, and chose the London after trying it out on the Icey that I am borrowing. I found it so soft and secure, that I was sold on it. Never sat on a saddle quite like it, and it really seemed to fit me (and fit Bruni, too). I like the idea of the Dixie Midnight, so I'm hoping it is a good idea Anyone tried them ? CindyF

[IceHorses] Re: bolting/eating fish
I've found that the clipping in the fall helps to some extent, but the Lalli, who is imported from Iceland tends to be more sluggish mid-Sept-Nov. each year even if the weather drops into daytime 60's/nights 40's (we're in Santa Ynez, Calif). When I first addded him to our family 14 years ago, I thought something was wrong with him & drew blood incl a T3/T4. It was low for that period then came up. Each year I have drawn blood to track it & the same thing happened low T3/T4 for that period. Drew blood every 3 months year round for 6 years, but the thyroid came up each time after that fall period. Our other guy Selur, who is Canadian born gets a little sluggish, but have only a little drop in his thyroid. . not as much as Lalli. Other Icelandic owners around here (we used to have over 200 in our Valley alone) noticed the same thing even with clipping. Elizabeth Haug @ Viking Saga said that the first generation imports seemed to suffer the most, but even her Calif. bred horses got less energetic. Phill/Robyn/ Christine from the Icelandic Horse Farm told me the same thing when I was so worried. Lucky you who have horses that this doesn't happen to yearly!!! Kaaren BTW, since I added the Hilton (Chamisa) Herbs/Himalayan Salt & actually started to do daily Jin Shin on Lalli for 10 min., they are much better, but still not as energetic as other times of the year. Lalli's blood work also shows improvement during this time since adding the latter. Maybe next year he will improve more??!!

I should have posted this yesterday, but with the holidays, I just thought of this as a good medium to get the word out. I hadn't really thought about the old "hair/energy-zapping" saying in a long time until last spring - late February, maybe? Sina had a little ongoing lameness and seemed lethargic - I was worried about her. The vet came out and did a fairly extensive lameness exam (no x-rays) and could see her little "bobbles" but advised me to work her through it. (The vet thought she'd possibly tweaked something during pregnancy/delivery.) The vet pointed out that I needed to do a generous clip job on her to work her - I'd done a minor trace clip on her the previous fall, but we could see that wasn't going to be enough. I clipped her that afternoon. It took a while to work through the lameness "bobbles" but we did and she's fine, but the lethargy improved immediately. That was a huge relief to me, because I was reading that the lethargy was associated with her feeling bad due to the lameness. Once I saw her energy return, I didn't feel so bad about asking her to exercise. I re-clipped a couple of others after that, and saw a similar change. I think I appreciate the value of clipping a little more every year. Karen Thomas, NC

I haven't done this in a while, but years ago, I had little speakers for a Walkman (that long ago bit the dust), and I put them in a cantle bag, and I'd ride in the ring sometimes to music. The horses seemed to respond to the music - or maybe the music just changed MY energy level and they followed my lead. :) I'm not big on headphones on the trail though where I think I should be very aware of what's around me. Re: [IceHorses] Ipods
Funny you should mention Ipods. My girlfriend and I were saying how we like to here what is going on around us when we ride. So we don't like to use them while riding. That is just us. But we have 3 of them for our cars and working out. I love them. > I'm not talking about riding with the iPod on a regular basis. I don't even like to drive a car with the earphones on - I'm afraid I'll be distracted and not hear a siren or something I should know about. I'm just talking about the rides where I'm working on a particular skill for me, or working on teaching a horse something in particular. I have a tendency to watch a video, and think "wow, what a great idea - that seems easy!" Then when I get on the horse, I suddenly draw a blank. That's one thing I have liked about the Parelli program, and wish more trainers would incorporate - those nifty little guidebooks that you can take with you for in-the-ring review. I have always ridden (not always by choice) horses that tended to be on the hot side. I think they're quieter when the weather is warmer. I'm thinking that horses might also be calmer/warmer when their coats begin to grow in the Fall and the days are still warm. And all those Thoroughbreds and my current TWH are why I love Icelandics. >> No, they really do eat herring sometimes. The farmers would stick a barrel out in the winter and the horses would help themselves. Years ago, my husband picked up a bucket in the feed room and saw a small mouse in the bottom. He has that universal overgrown-little-boy trait of seeing an opportunity to tease someone (usually me, sometimes one of our pets) in just about everything. On a whim, he turned around to the barn aisle to my old Quarter Horse who'd followed him into the barn, and he put the bucket under his nose - thinking he'd startle him and make him jump back. Wrong. Sundance slurped up the little mouse in about three nanoseconds, live, much to my horror - I don't think Sundance even saw what was in the bucket. I watched him like a hawk for several days (while Cary slept in the doghouse) but he was fine. Actually, everyone was fine except the mouse, but I was only worried about Sundance. (Otherwise, I'd probably be a widow - I was NOT happy with Cary!) That is a true story. However, from that incident, it does not logically follow to say that "Quarter Horses eat live mice." And it REALLY doesn't logically follow to say that QH "should" eat live mice... :) A lot of things happen in Iceland (or in Redneckville, USA) that horses survive, but that doesn't make them desirable. Gotta be careful when assigning cause versus effect. Karen Thomas, NC (Does that story qualify as a "one-rat study"?)
Re: [IceHorses] Re: bolting/eating fish
> And I have found some of them DO get more lethargic in the autumn (september, usually) when the main coat-growing is done. Just my own experience. Sure. But the "saga" is that they get lethargic because they are growing the hair, as if the process of growing hair is zapping their energy. My horses will act lethargic when they are HOT...regardless of the season, or whether the coat is actively coming in, or if we have an unusually hot day in January. The ones who get clipped don't act that way, unless I clip them too early, and too much coat grows back in before cold weather. That blows the hair-growing-theory to me. Karen Thomas, NC
