Horse and sheep blood is used to make rattlesnake antivenin. Very small amounts
of venom are injected into the horse. The amount is gradually increased until
the horse or sheep develops antibodies in it's blood, blood is extracted and
spun in centrifuge. The serum (liquid part of the blood) contains the
antibodies and is used as antivenin. I think goats are used to make scorpion
antivenin in Arizona.

>From the pictures, I'm not sure I'd consider the Western Sensation to have a
"base" of 4" longer than the other Sensation models. The extra length on
the western model appears more like a "skirt" on a treed western saddle than
what I'd consider a "base" on an English type saddle, which may or may not
be relevant to how the saddle fits the horse. A skirt is mostly for looks,
and if it's soft, it doesn't really matter too much how long it is. This
sounds picky maybe, but I've wondered if a western Sensation might actually
work better on Melnir, because it doesn't have the wide "flaps" down the
side, even though the base/skirt of the saddle is longer. I just can't be
sure what dimension makes the Hybrid walk back a little on him.

But... I don't need another saddle - the dressage works fine. :)

[IceHorses] Re: sensation hybrid ? for Karen

2007-11-24 Thread Kaaren Jordan
Just to clarify, the XL (extra long seat ) seat does not change the base
length of the Hybrid or any other Sensation saddle. The cantle is just
moved back 1" on the base & the dressage cantle is not as wrap around or
deep as the standard Hybrid cantle so it is more roomy/less confining than
the standard Hybrid cantle for the rider. Nothing changes for the horse.

Karen has 2 Hybrids with the dressage flap & XL seat with dressage cantle.
Janice MacDonald has a Hybrid with dressage flap
& st andard Hybrid cantle. I think I am the only dealer that has demo
models in the Hybrid with English Trail flap/XL seat dressage cantle &
Hybrid's with dressage flap/ XL seat with dressage cantle. They are my best
sellers of all the models so far.

The first few off the presses dressage Sensations were about 3/4" - 1"
shorter in the base for the horse than the then standard English Trails.
Dressage models do ride a bit smaller for the rider as well because of the
deeper pommel & deeper cantle in that model. The slightly shorter base
length occured in just these first few models. Since then all the
exchangeable parts for the Sensation are die cut at the manufacturers so
base lengths/all parts are about the same. All that being said, humans are
making them & leather handles/stretchs differently from hide to hide so
there are still some very slight variations from saddle to saddle . The
Western Sensation is the only model out right now that has a longer base
length for the horse of about 4".

Most saddlers don't even reflock with pure wool any more, so I'm not sure
where you'd find it. I think anyone who deals for Stubben might have it -
not sure if they'd sell you some though.

>From all I've heard, I'd gather that there are a lot of design flaws with
the Hilasons that you don't find in the better brands, even the
not-too-pricey brands like Barefoots.

The Sensations work the best for us. Maybe you'll get lucky and find a
used one before long. Unfortunately, used ones seem to get snapped up
quickly.

I really don't like the idea of a Bob Marshall saddle in a seat size that
big on any Icelandic that I've seen. The BMSS get REALLY long in the larger
seat sizes.

>>> Karen, you mentioned once that your husband is a bit more solid built,
and rides in a treeless, what size saddle does he use?

He hasn't ridden in a treed western saddle in so long that I'm not sure his
size, but I'd guess he'd need at least a 17", maybe bigger. His last treed
saddle was an 18" Free N Easy Flex Panel saddle. Before that, an 18" Duett
brand dressage model and it was really too snug for him. He now rides in a
Sensation Trail model now, standard seat length. Unlike the Bob Marshall,
the Sensation has no rigid parts, so we don't have to worry about loin rubs
or his weight being transferred to the back of the rigid cantle. He's free
to balance his weight where the horse's conformation demands, even though he
is a big rider. (He still needs to ride a decent-sized, strongly-built
Icelandic - no saddle will make him seem like a small rider!)

Also, if a treeless saddle only weighs about 10lbs and is flexible,
would it really cause that much of a problem if it sits further back over
the loin, as long as the rider sits balanced in the centre?

I'd say that's pretty much true...EXCEPT for the treeless saddles that have
rigid pommels and cantles. The Sensations are flexible throughout, but some
treeless brands have notable rigid parts.

This is key: while I thought my old BMSS was fairly comfy, and Sina did
pretty well in it for a while, all BMSS's have a rigid pommel and cantle and
they can't be removed. There are some newer style treeless saddles similar
to the BMSS (Torsion, Barefoot, etc.) that have rigid pommels and cantles,
BUT their pommels and cantles zip open, and you can remove the hard pieces.
That's exactly what I've done with my Torsions, and re-stuffed them with the
pillow-stuffing stuff you get in the craft department at Wal-Mart. If you do
that, you eliminate the rigid pieces, but it still gives a surprising amount
of shape to the saddle, to keep them from rolling. (If you take the time to
learn to mount carefully.) That isn't an option with the BMSS's.

Even though I have to be grateful for the BMSS being one of the first
treeless saddle options available, a lot of people now consider them to be
"part-treed" compared to saddles like the Sensations.

Did any of this help, or did I make it worse?

It's not really the weight of the saddle that counts, it's where it
places you in relation to the horses back. If the saddle places you
on or near his loins you're going to cause him pain. It's best to try
find a saddle that places you in that sweet spot we all strive for.

RE: [IceHorses] sensation hybrid ? for Karen

2007-11-24 Thread Karen Thomas
Hello Karen, Why do you think the hybrid does not work as well on
Melnir? Is he built a lot different from your other horses, shorter back??
Renee

He's built differently. First, he's smaller, but what I suspect is the
bigger issue is that he has pretty laid-back shoulders - not upright, but
angled back. He also has a rather long humerus bone, one that is more
parallel to the ground as opposed to some of the more show-type Icelandic's.
For instance, I'd count Runa as my most "show-type" Icelandic. She has a
rather upright shoulder with more sloped angle to her humerus. In other
words, Runa has the conformation for nice gait in her rear end, but her
front end conformation makes it easy for her to do a true rack, with some
"lift and fold" to her front legs. Melnir is more of a long, flat mover -
he's built to foxtrot and/or runwalk, although he can saddle rack.

All that said, I CAN use a Hybrid on Melnir. It was really the 17" Torsion
that didn't work well on him - it "walked back" on him. My particular
Hybrids are the extended seat models, so I suspect the shorter, standard
seat versions would be fine. My Hybrids will work, with a breastcollar.
But, since he's a smaller horse anyway, I just use my standard-seat
Sensation dressage model on him - it's more attractive with his smaller
proportions and it works like a charm.

To put this in perspective, four years ago I would have been VERY happy to
have any of these "problems" with Sina. None of these are serious issues,
especially compared to what I went through with her, but since I do have
options now, I use them.

It's on the edge of what I would consider to be too long. It's a 14
inch saddle on a rather large Icelandic (13.3). It doesn't slide back
at all, when it's on Gusti it doesn't move. I'm sure we could ride
around with the girth undone and it would stay right where it is.

However, having said that. Gusti does move out better in the
Sensation. I started looking through pics of when we first tried the
Sensation on Gusti. My daughter and I noticed a difference in him. So
maybe it IS too long for Gusti.

I don't know. What does everyone else think? Do you think it's too long?

Here is AZ it is very rocky. My friend Carla who is on
the list sometimes rides barefoot. My new guy is
sensitive with shoes on. Not use to the rocks. I
ride Scooter with fronts only because he isn't easy to
shoe. He does great.

 > Does someone really think this saddle fits this horse?<

I think the saddle needs to be brought forward a good bit more than it
currently is, and if I had it on my icelandics, it would migrate forward so the
girth finds the sweet spot underneath, not so far back as it is in the picture,
I mostly ride on a torsion saddle and it is a nineteen inch seat, and it
doesn't sit so far back on the loins as you say, and I got the 19 in. Hilason
western style that also sits nicely on the iceys but I don't prefer it as it
has a horn that gets in my way when I bend down to put my foot back in the
stirrups, one of these days one of my boobs is going to burst when I have to go
forward, I am so used to riding without a horn in front that it is an annoyance
now, but the saddle is useful for new riders who aren't used to treeless
saddles and balance seats so in that regard, it is nice to have a handle to
grab until they are a better rider and as I had mentioned before, I have 3 very
different shaped icelandics and one cream draft horse so it is nice to have
treeless saddles so I can switch them around, my old half breed big horn saddle
with full quarter horse bars wasn't wide enough for any of my horses so I sold
it to a neighbor who owns a appy pony and it works great on him, and she has a
1 year old icey colt who looks to be much more narrow than mine and will
probably fit him too when the day comes to start him under saddle. I did get
pics of my big red saddle but haven't figured out how to get it on the site,, I
know I went to my yahoo address the last time I put in pics but I don't
remember after that. Any help would be appreciated. The pictures are on my
digital Kodak camera, if anyone is familiar with that.Jeannette in very cold

In my area that I mostly ride in, I do not need shoes.
However, travel even 30 miles in another direction,
and you do, so I am going with boots for those times,
and the easy boots that don't go above the coronet
band for long distance.

On another list I'm on, those are fighting words, but ... how many of you

All of our endurance horses are shod because of rocky terrain. We never
needed to shoe the Welsh ponies because they rarely left the arena, and the
good old pony Gypsy that raised our daughters had shoes only one summer
when they simply rode her until she couldn't be barefoot

When Bev and husband return from Hawaii, I'll ride Tosca a couple of times
in a lesson format, then she's all mine . She would never need shoes for
what Stephanie will do with her, but I am on a mission to make her a really
solid citizen before she goes on to her career as a therapy horse. For one
thing, there are a couple of grandaughters who will probably be thrilled to
have a chance to keep her fit.

I really agree with this Karen. There are Cushings horses, I believe
we have a cushings Icelandic which we manage very carefully with LMF
low carb feed. Every batch is tested for the sugars.

And there are people who just plain overfeed their horses, give too
much grain, do not know what to look for...think that a fat horse is
a good thingall this shows up in their feet so fast that a good
farrier can tell if there is a change in food if there is a problem.

Both things happenits whats makes up a big percentage of our
farrier business. Sally is a Physician so she really understands the
research and dealt with IR humans in her clinic in Seattle. The vets
love her (except for the ones who do not like anyone else who knows
anything...an unfortunate humane characteristic) as they can actually
talk medical terms in dealing with these horses.

Some horses are IR and some are overfed and fed incorrectly.
Sometimes out of ignorance, sometimes thats how the owners show their
love to their pets.

And of course road founder, thats another whole issue of overworking
a horse...

Re: [IceHorses] Oh my...

2007-11-24 Thread Nancy Sturm
Karen,

I'm real nervous about the treeless saddle concept because of riding with a
lady who weights a lot less than I do, but still has difficulty getting on
and off her horse. She works for Candace Kahn, so I suppose she's using one
of the saddles Candy sells. She rides 50's and 75's, farther than I
probably will, and her horse sometimes gets s little sore and weary. That
sounds pretty stupid. Her horse is more sore and weary than you would
expect her to be.

I am concerned about my weight (160 lbs) and I am trying to do something
about that and about the horse's back over the longer times we might spend
out on trail. When I first returned to riding after my back injury, I
worried about not staying centered. I knew that I wasn't because my right
stirrup leather kept stretching. I seem to have resolved that. I have to
wonder if it was associated with scoliosis. My right shoulder wants to drop
lower too if I am not thinking about staying balanced - even while typing.

It depends on the saddle, Nancy. If you're talking about a treed saddle, yes,
it's likely a leap to assume that one saddle will fit two horses. But, every
Icelandic on this farm goes well in the Sensation Trail models and the
Sensation Dressage. The Hybrid doesn't work quite so well on Melnir, but seems
great on all the others. Even big old Cary rides his Perfect Skjoni Pony in an
English Trail model. I'm sure there are SOME Icelandics out there somewhere
that might not work well in a Sensation, but they darned sure work well on most
of them. I'd bet there's a good chance that you can find yourself a treeless
saddle that will work for both.

I was thinking of having the Supracor pad I like cut down by a saddle maker
to fit whatever new saddle I eventually buy for the two mares - well I guess
that's a bit of a leap, assuming one saddle would fit both girls.

Endurance riders need to deal with keeping their horses as cool as possible
and having lots of excess pad doesn't help. Since the horse's backs are
checked for pain/discomfort, we also have to have adequate and appropriate
padding. It's a bit of a balancing act.

[IceHorses] Oh my...

There is a BMSS for sale on ebay that says it fits well on the back of an
Icelandic: http://tinyurl.com/37nwem

It is a NINETEEN AND A HALF inch seat! Oh, my... The saddle is sitting
past the loins, all the way to the horse's pelvis.

Personally, I was never satisfied that Sina could comfortably use a BMSS
sized above a 15", and I finally decided that none of mine really should be
ridden in a seat size longer than about a 16-16.5" and that would be one of
the larger horses.

Does someone really think this saddle fits this horse?
