[IceHorses] Re:Icehorses sweating?
I live in Colorado with my Icelandic. He has been here for two years now. The first year I had so many problems with him adjusting to the heat. He developed andydrosis over the first summer. His system just shut down and quit sweating. This then caused ulcers than frequent colic. This past year in March I body clipped, put him on One AC, misters in his stall for when temps were over 80. Guess what? He sweats now and had no problems with the heat this summer. This will be the plan for him while we live in dry hot Colorado. My other Icelandic that was born here doesn't seem to show any problems with the heat. - Be a better pen pal. Text or chat with friends inside Yahoo! Mail. See how.
[IceHorses] Re: An Icelandic Horse Community Project
Thanks for the great idea. I am going to have my 4-H kids send their pictures with my iceys for the Holiday cards. They are only 5 years old and will probably love this project. __ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! Mail has the best spam protection around http://mail.yahoo.com
[IceHorses] Re:Anyone using a treed saddle anymore?
I use everything they make. I use my favorite Crates Western saddle for ponying my two year old. I have an English Icelandic saddle I use when I want to ride English and now my favorite is my Treeless Sensation Hybrid saddle that I received a couple months ago. Couldn't ride without any of them. Lucky to have kept all my saddles through the years. - Take the Internet to Go: Yahoo!Go puts the Internet in your pocket: mail, news, photos & more.
[IceHorses] help with ponying
Hello, I have been ponying my 2 yr old Icelandic gelding with my 12 yr gelding around the 2 acre property. I have corrected any problems with racing ahead or playing with me or my saddle and have worked with behavior at a faster pace. My problem is that now I have left the property and gone out around my house and trails. Baby Maverick is just dragging behind me. I have given him encouragement with treats in my lap to keep him up with us and it isn't working. He just walks so slowly. I took him out the next day on just a walk with me and still the same thing. I introduced a crop and got what I needed to keep up. I just don't think I can ride, pony and handle a crop. I know most of you have a lot of experience in this. What should be my next step? [IceHorses] what age to drive a cart
Is there a specific age to wait for to drive your icelandic with a cart? I have started driving my 2 year old with just driving reins. First 5 minutes he wonder what I was doing and after that just went along like he had years of experience. These wonderful horses, they make teaching such a positive experience. I know we wait for around 4 to 5 to ride is it the same in driving with a cart? My goal one day is to put my baby and older icelandic that are a matching pair of chestnuts with blonde manes together and drive a cart. They look so close in looks only difference for now is size and one has mane on left other on right. Oh, what a beauty they will be. Thanks, Rene', Gunnar and baby Maverick - Moody friends. [IceHorses] Re: Liz Graves / CO
I am excited that Liz is coming to Colorado. I signed up about 3 months ago...I belong to the local TW club and heard about it. Gunnar is clipped on meds and seems to be very healthy and ready to go. We are expecting to be in the 80s which will slow him down a little. The vet game me an idea of using rubbing alcohol mixed with water to spray on his chest to help keep him cool. Has anyone tried this yet? Robyn where to you live? I live in Brighton/Thorton area Rene' & Gunnar - Ahhh...imagining that irresistible "new car" smell? Check outnew cars at Yahoo! Autos.
[IceHorses] Update on Gunnar
Hi everyone, Thanks to everyone over the last few months who have given me suggestions with my colic horse Gunnar. He had over 30 colics in 6 months with a diagnosis of ulcers and andyhrosis. It's scary to write this thinking you can jinx it, but Gunnar has been colic free for over a month now. What do I think changed? A couple things. Gunnar came from more of a pasture setting with grass growing...not my 2 acre dirt lot. So what we have done is feed him 4x a day. The last feeding at 9:00 pm. He now has less time without any food available to him...stopping any fasting that was accruing. I also have a hay he doesn't care for very much out all the time. The other thing was a complete clipping. We went from 20 -40 degrees a day to 70. He was clipped and running around spunky. The other thing was a yearling. Maverick (the baby) got Gunnar off his lazy butt and they run around all day long. So know Gunnar is ready to ride and in shape. I don't share much with the group but I do enjoy the emails. Since I have started a 4-H group with the horses I am always happy to see messages regarding any training or ideas working with kids. Thanks for all the support. Rene', Gunnar and Maverick and of course a qtr horse - Dixie who wants to be an icelandic too
[IceHorses] re: what would you say
I loved this topic. Having admired the Icelandic breed for over 5 years and having a very large quarter horse I am so happy to be asked anything!!! I live in Colorado and we really don't see any here and in the show ring "a no show" so question are very welcomed. I do need to read up more on history to give correct answers but do love the questions. What I have head from most is "oh my god how cute!" and "what a gentlemen" "is he for real?" I love it. Can't wait for the winter to leave, have a healthy horse again and show his adorable self off!!! [IceHorses] Ulcers
Gunnar was scoped and found to have ulcers in December. He had a rating of 2 out of 4 being mild. He was on gastroguard for a month and then a maintenance treatment for a month. Guess what, he is now colicing almost every other day. I have an appointment on Thursday to get re -scoped and check out more. Gunnar has pasture available at anytime. No training since owning him and has had no riding since October since colic started more frequent. He has a very mellow life with no threats or stress we can find. One thing is his colic is ALWAYS at 7:00 am. He has food available when ever wanted and three times a day feeding of Timothy grass. Any ideas would help for trying to figure this out. Gunnar is a 11 yr old gelding, with a pasture mate, had andyhrosis (non-sweater) through the summer. Lives in Colorado with freezing winter temps-seems very happy about that. All blood tests seem normal so far. X-ray showed some sand but very little and has been treated for. Colic started 7 months after moving here from Canada. No history of problems Thanks, Rene' - Access over 1 million songs - Yahoo! Music Unlimited.
[IceHorses] how to trailer a yearling?
Hello..I could use all your education and experience in trailering a yearling. I'm thinking positive that my yearling that lives 60 minutes from me will be allowed in my very strict "HOA rules" neighborhood. We are only allowed 2 horses and have over 2 acres with a barn. I meet with the board on Wednesday for approval. If allowed I will be moving him soon. I have a 2 horse slant. My plan is to bring my very steady 11 yr gelding with me to help him along. My question is do I tie the 11 yr old and leave the baby free? Should I leave them both free? I'm not planning on opening up the slant, just keeping it a box stall. Any help would be so appreciated. Re: [IceHorses] EZ Ride Stirrups
I have had the leather ones for over five years. They look great except for my last horse running me through a gate. The leather is a nice redish that matched my western saddle. They saved my knees.
