[IceHorses] Hot Weather Idea

2008-07-17 Thread saddlehelp
Since it's been so hot lately..and atypically humid I've been finding
my helmut to really increase the hot headfeeling. Last week out, I
accidently dropped a wet wash cloth into my helmut found that by
wetting the helmut liner I stayed cooler longer. I've been spritzing
the liners with cold water from a mister bottle I now keep in the
refrigerator before the ride. It keeps my head cool for nearly the
whole hour and a half ride.

Anybody else have any tips for staying cool during trail rides???

[IceHorses] Tacky Tack Bareback Pad Review

2008-07-13 Thread saddlehelp
Well I just received my new Reinsman Tacky Tack Bareback Pad yesterday
had a chance to try it today.

It is very well made with super grippy ultra suede top a sympanova
type underside. If retro-fitted with billets stirrup hangers
ridden over a Skito Pad this bareback pad could be mistaken for a
flat seated/gaming saddle from a distance. The pad did not move even
with the crappy girth that comes with it. It does have a topline
contour, but not as much of a contour as the new Toklat Hi Whither
Bareback pad. What I did not care for is the center seam on the
riders side. I could feel it through my light weight summer riding
tights. This is going to be the deal breaker for me. The binding
edges esp. over the whither area are also quite stiff, which may
soften up over time. Definitely would need to ride it over a Skito
pad with 3/4 foam for horse comfort until/if the binding edges soften
up. All in all, still a great value for the money. Maybe would work
for someone who is a little less of aprincess the pea type than me.

Still looking for a replacement bareback pad for my much used
converted Toklat bareback pad which is no longer being made. I'm just
so picky about tack fit.

Tom @ Skito is sending me one of his new bareback pads to try my
custom lengthened flap Toklat Hi Whither cut is on the way...keep you
all posted.

I think I'm going to be like the prince in Cinderella when choosing
my next Icey...if my Sensation fits, then that horse may be a keeper!!

[IceHorses] Check out these videos

2008-07-03 Thread saddlehelp
I found some videos mentioned on the Cascade Group
http://www.hestakaup.com/content/view/63/125/
to be interesting. They are videos of a North American
dressage teacher helping Icelandic horses riders as well as other
breeds of horses.

Let's stay positive on the input even if you don't completely agree
with the instructor. BTW, I only had a chance to view 2 of the
videos, but only found a few things I personally did not agree with.
I thought the riders were doing a nice job of integrating the
instruction.

[IceHorses] Perhaps a productive approach

2008-06-28 Thread saddlehelp

Perhaps: You go girl!!!. So happy you've found a sidepull that works for you
you are trying it in a safe environment for you both. I have Iceys in the US
have been using them for quite a few years with great success.

My guys also really like the Sensation treeless saddle are gaiting so
much more freely. There are many other treeless saddles that Iceys
seem to love as well. I can send you links if you would like. We have
also been taking something called Centered Riding over here for a
while find I am more with my horse than ever before. I'd love to
keep in contact with you to see what you've been exploring. E-mail me
anytime!!

Taking an extra few minutes to do this in any video you may see an
openness to change just might plant the seed which could spread in
more positive ways than you can foresee. People do talk about the
thing that work for them...and most of us really do want our horses to
be happy /comfy, but may not know another way of doing that.

Isn't that why most of us belong to lists??

[IceHorses] I Think Lalli Can Read

2007-09-04 Thread saddlehelp
Over the weekend, it was so hot here in Calif. that all we could do
is a very early ride around our neighborhood gravel roads. One of my
neighbors that has lots of fruit trees had put out a table laden with
large baskets filled to the brim with all sorts of fruit. There was a
sign over the table in big letters stating Free fruit, take as much
as you like. My big guy Lalli was not too enthused about our boring
neighborhood ride until he rounded the corner spotted the table
with sign about a block away. He just picked up his head made a
beeline for that table at the fastest, smoothest toelt he could muster
stopping briefly to look at the sign before taking very carefully s
fruit from each basket. I was surprised he was so polite about it as
fruit is a favored treat.

For about 10 years now, both my horses also stop at the red
intersection stop signs looking both ways before crossing any
intersection not just the one I usually go through. I have often
observed with mine that they transfer learning to entirely different
situations, not just the one that they were taught. Iceys are so smart
have such good vision. I'll bet even if one starts to lose a little
sight with age, it is still better than most other breeds.

[IceHorses] A Safety Idea

2007-09-04 Thread saddlehelp
A while back, I started attaching a refective dog tag ID to a ring on
each horse's saddle just in case I ever became parted from my horse
on the trail. I ordered a large reflective heart with each horse's
name, our address, phone on one side my vets name on the other. I
also wear a small waist pack that Snugpax made for me with a front
zippered compartment for small vials of homeopathics Rescue Remedy
with a main compartment for my cell phone treats for my horse +
hoofpick. I also have a smaller ID tag attached onto my waist pack
with all my info emergency contact #'s so if I am knocked out, I can
be easily identified. Since I ride out primarily alone on the trail,
it makes me feel better that both myself/my boys can be ID'd easily in
case of trouble.
