Re: [IceHorses] Anyone using a treed saddle anymore?
oh i forgot, i also have a flex panel orthoflex stitchdown. actually my favorite "treed" saddle to ride in, and i had the new shorter, more flexible panels put on and had the back ground off to allow for even more flexibility. It is wonderful for jaspar because there is a huge tunnel down the spine for clearance and the panels with their booties mean I dont even have to have a saddle pad across his spine or anything touching his spine in anyway. he seems real happy in this saddle and so does stonewall and fox.but stonewall and fox seem happy in anything except stonewall for some reason doesnt seem to like a dixie midnite saddle pad. dont ask me how i know, i can just sense some hesitance to move out freely at first. I love this saddle for MY comfort and love the way it feels secure and somehow makes me sit more correctly, and I wish it would fit all my horses but I put it on tivar and my gosh it perched up on him like a silly joke! Re: [IceHorses] Anyone using a treed saddle anymore?
at our last board of county commissioners meeting it was 30 degrees out and a man came in and sat next to me wearing bermuda shorts, short sleeved tee short, and crocs. One of the holes in the croc had a lttle plastic panda head in it. ?? He was about fifty years old. as for treed saddles. yes. Here are mine and my comments: 1. Thorowgood wide tree dressage. Works great on Fox but is miserably wretchedly uncomfortable after even an hour on the trail. 2. Antique bona allen custom plantation model. (roy rogers traveled with Trigger cross country by train to have him fitted in Georgia for his custom bona allen saddles. (not to be confused with buena vista model saddles as so many often do, bona allens come in many models, most were custom made and custom fitted horse by horse). I have yet to find a horse this saddle doesnt fit, even Tivar, tho I am no expert in saddlefit and due to his saddlefit issues I never actually rode him in it longer than two laps around a roundpen but I might risk a longer ride in it someday just for experimental purposes) it fits all my other horses, no matter the shape. I spoke with Liz about it and she said the bona allens, like many vintage saddles, work for more horses than modern treed saddles due to somewhere along the line saddlemakers started all using the same pre-fab tree which has little or no flare whereas vintage saddles, custom fitted for each horse, most had "flare". It is very slick and hard but ok for a trail ride if I put a cusion in teh seat, and its a hassle to adjust the stirrups. 3. a cheap mexican show saddle with lots of silver, never been on a horse. I imagine its horrible. 4. a wide tree tucker endurance, my husbands. None of the horses he rides seem to object. I thin anytime you ride in a tucker on any horse it needs to be a wide tree to have enough flare. You can always pad up the rest. 5. I have had many treeless saddles and the one most stable and secure feeling to me was a bob marshall, but I HATED the way i felt like my hips just hung straight down. and it wasnt my imagination, after an hour on teh trail my hips would start aching. My sensation hybrid is the most comfortable/best treeless so far, and I really think I can get over this wobbly feeling I get in it when Teev is cantering around a corner. and since i have never ridden him in any treed saddle, I might even feel that way then too, I dont know. Re: [IceHorses] Anyone using a treed saddle anymore?
I have wondered about the references I've seen lately about "custom" Stubben saddles. Unless something has changed, I don't believe they are really a custom (as in built on the measurements of a given horse). I still have a 35 year old Stunner Siegfried. I love that saddle. I also had a Tristan dressage saddle which I hated. I don't think I even kept it long enought to break it in. The old forward seat jumping saddle is the one I put on all the youngsters. I used to even start horses in that favorite saddle. It actually fits the Icelandics pretty well, but I'd want to have the tree inspected before I actually rode in it. I have a feeling it may not be in very good shape. Nancy

RE: [IceHorses] Anyone using a treed saddle anymore?
>>>They had them custom made, I believe the brand name was Stubben. Stubben doesn't really make custom saddles, do they...? I know they can be custom flocked, but as far as I know, they don't make custom trees. I ask because a Stubben dealer with many years of experience tried to fit Sina years ago, and she told me it would be hard to do. They are very nice saddles, and they DO run wider than some other familiar brands, but all the Stubbens I've ever seen have been pretty "apex" as opposed to "arch." I had a used one briefly, but it didn't really work either. Lovely saddle though. Karen Thomas, NC
RE: [IceHorses] Anyone using a treed saddle anymore?
>>> I am looking for a place/brand to start looking for a new saddle for my gelding. Is anyone using a treed dressage or all purpose saddle on their Icelandic sucessfully and would you be willing to share the brand name with me? I honestly bought or tried probably 40-50 treed saddles during the early years I owned Icelandics, and I had several saddle fitting appointments for my horses. A few would work for a while, but none really worked for Sina. As the horses would change shape, here we'd go again. The Duetts were ok for a few horses, even Sina for a while, but I finally sold that one too. Even with them, if you need larger than a 17-17.5" seat, you'll find that the panels may be too long for many Icelandic backs. I had a saddle-fitting for Sina with Carol Brett of Balance Saddles. She isn't a big fan of treeless saddles (her saddles are treed) but even she told me I'd probably have to use a treeless for her. She was the second saddle-fitter who told me that. I did like the Balance saddles, and they are lovely, lovely saddles. And, they tend to be more "arch" than "apex" in their gullets, and that makes them shaped more appropriately for most Icelandic backs. (Think of "arch" as an upsidedown "U", with "apex" as an upsidedown "V".) But, if I had to look at a treed saddle now, that would be the first brand I'd look at. Karen Thomas, NC
Re: [IceHorses] Anyone using a treed saddle anymore?
Kristen. We have an old Passier dressage saddle that fits our Icelandic very well. She seems to like it and be comfortable in it. It is not particularly comfortable for me, but our grandson loves it and goes for long mountain trail rides in it on his Arab endurance horse. It was purchased used and I have no idea of the seat or tree size, but it was used before on a a 16.2 h warmblood. Tosca is 13.2. Nancy

Okay, let me rephrase my question: I am looking for a place/brand to start looking for a new saddle for my gelding. Is anyone using a treed dressage or all purpose saddle on their Icelandic sucessfully and would you be willing to share the brand name with me? Unfortunately the Sensation treeless did not work for me otherwise I would be headed that route. -Kristen in MI Shape Yahoo! in your own image. [IceHorses] Anyone using a treed saddle anymore?
I have finally decided to sell my Icelandic saddle (I will send details to Judy when I take pictures later this week). The saddle fits Deacon reasonably well, which is why I have kept it for three years; but it is totally wrong for me (too big and I hate knee rolls). I have a Big Horn haflinger western saddle that works for both of us. However, I would prefer to ride English. So...is anyone on the list still riding an Icelandic in a treed English saddle?
