Great point, Anna.

But there's at least one sense where "right versus wrong" is defined by
forces beyond any of us individuals. How many "Betty's" are there in the
USA? Ten million horses, most owners are adult, even middle-aged-or-older
women...so probably at least a million or two? Certainly way over half a
million...? And when you consider that a good many male riders are
corresponding "Billy's", that's a lot of us Billy's/Betty's. Any way you
look at it, there are a lot of us...many times the entire population of
Iceland.And...who are the biggest group of potential buyers...? Billys
and Bettys. (Look at the demographics of the folks who crowd to see the
Parelli's if you don't believe me...) And who is selling, at least in
Iceland...? A few hundred Icelandic farmers...? In this sense, our
free-market economy dictates who's "right", at least in the sales/marketing
sense!!!

The interviewer with the girl for the PBS Equitrekking show asked what
was the most humorous thing that's happened and she made a comment in
her reply that she didn't know who was more wild and spirited- the
farmers or thier horses. She tells some of the excitement of riding
with the farmers on the horse drive. At the end she makes a statement
that she was astounded that she got through the horse drive and even
more amazed to learn that they do it once a week.

I've never been to Iceland but love reading books by those who have
visited there and realize that they really are very different from
American 'Betty' riders. I think they have as much difficulty
relating to the 'Bettys' as we have relating to these farmers and how
they ride normally for their work.

There are several mentions of Icelandics in that issue - there is a
blurb on the travel channel's trip to Iceland and the VT Icelandic
Horse Farm is featured in an article on riding destinations for gaited
riding. The riding trip to Iceland wasn't the most flattering but the
other times Icelandics came up it was pretty good - no blatant
misinformation like we often see.

I was thinking the same thing! It's very well thought out and sensibly
written.

[IceHorses] Barn sour article

2008-01-02 Thread Karen Thomas
There's an interesting article on dealing with "Barn Sour" horses in the
latest issue of Trail Rider magazine. The article was written by Lynn Palm.
It's worth the cost of the magazine, I think.
