[IceHorses] Canter videos

2008-02-17 Thread Karen Thomas
Someone said that it's hard for Icelandic's to canter, but I don't agree. I
think it's hard sometimes for the very PACEY horses to canter, but most
Icelandics I know seem to canter just fine. Remember however, that none of
my Icelandic's have been trained to pace, nor were they trained from the
get-go for more speed like I kept hearing in the Icelandic evaluation
videos.

Here are some Icelandic's cantering, under saddle and at liberty:

Falki, under saddle: http://youtube.com/watch?v=NerhkPpqv7o and
http://youtube.com/watch?v=OSPUEFKoILg

Isak, Landi, Skjoni and Falki cantering a little faster (still not what I'd
call a gallop) at liberty: http://youtube.com/watch?v=0DbS3xubYYQ

Flekka, one of the AERC's 16 listed Icelandic horses (ha!) canters under
saddle, but her difficulty is more in getting the energy and motivation
going to move on out: http://youtube.com/watch?v=XQ5h5MDMrYE I think her
canter difficulties are a state of mind issue, not a physical one - she's
just in no rush to get anywhere!

I have lots of videos of my horses cantering at liberty, especially the
young ones. Here are a few, showing several gaits, including some canter -
even a couple of flying lead changes:

I'll try to get some more videos of our horses cantering under saddle,
especially Sina and Trausti whose canters are quite different in style - his
with more up action, and hers very flat, but both very comfy and relaxed
to ride.

By three gaited I assume you mean without any lateral gaits? ; )

I've been lucky enough to never yet have met an Icelandic with truly
NO lateral ability (though I've met a fair few with no trot at all).
The ones who have less lateral abiltity have usually had a more
correct (as in 3-beat with suspension) canter. Mostly, I've found the
nice slow canter comes with training and balance (or re-training in
the case of horses who have been taught to rush).

My (! ; )) Skessa finds a slow canter really hard. She has a lot of
pace in her, and to get a 3-beat canter she needs to go quite fast or
she falls into pace.

It seems to be pretty rare for Icelandics to manage a nice slow
collected canter. Ability, or training? The latter, I think, though
some 5gaited horses find it really hard.

I think that pacey horses can have a harder time trying to get the
nice little canter.

If they find a little four-beat rolling gait that suffices for the canter, that
can be really nice.

Do you find that the three-gaited Icelandics have as much problem with a nice
slow canter?

I do find that in general
horses which have pace (won't call them 5gaited horses Karen! ; ))
usually have softer canters than those that don't. The canter is often
4-beat and lacking in suspension, but very nice to sit on - same as
their trot, a lot of the time.

Fjóla is just like that. Her canter sure looks ugly but it's very comfortable.
Can't say much about her trot because it's very difficult to get her to trot
under saddle.

This is one of Nasi and Jaspar cantering together and you can kinda
see how Jaspar's appears more loose and flowing. He is a pacey horse
btw. Has a gorgeous canter to ride.

We should try to compile some videos of the different types of canters.

Thanks!
