dapples are a totally different genetic marker. Dapples exist on
their own, in any color, even black.

I just posted some pics of Gusti and Dagur...they don't have dapples
either. Both are chestnuts...though Gusti has a dun stripe.

That's pretty consistent with what we have too. Loftur has dapples, and

Hi Sylvia, yes, she's pretty.and you might be right, she could be
a dark palomino colour. It might be interesting for those of you out
there with offspring of hers.

She's our little retired Amma...she was 23 in March.

Well, Trish, since Wanda says she has black hairs mixed in, I wonder if you

Yes, there is dark hair mixed in. And the oddest thing is...when she
changes her coat...for the first few weeks she has an oddly 'blackish"
colour to her. Very strange. It's more noticeable when she's getting
her winter coat in, but it's so subtle I'm not sure a camera could
capture it.

I was always told dappling was a sign of good health. Even by jet black
TWH mare dapples in the summer - you just have to stand just right in the
light to see it, tho.

I've heard that too, but I really think there must be more to it than that.
I suspect that they may show better on some horses when they are in good
health, but some horses never seem to show dapples, and some always seem to
show them. My old QH never lost his dapples and he was in bad health for
the last 5 years of his life. Svertla's dapples don't show strongly, but I
could even see a faint trace of them when she was about a "1" or "2" on the
1-10 body condition score. I don't know that for sure, but I seriously
think there's probably a color/pigment aspect to dapples that is also a
factor.

I just remembered we did have a silver dapple chestnut here that had
sooty mane and tail, he had black hairs mixed in, and he showed
dapples in the spring and fall, it was pretty cool. All the local
people here called him a palimino, its a Very popular color here, so
we never corrected anybody.it got too complicated.

I'm answering my own question, sort of. Here's what the Sponenberg book says,
("Horse Color", 1983, by Philip Sponenberg and Bonnie V. Beaver, page 28.)
"Dappling is a network of darker areas imposed over lighter areas, and can be
present on any color. The effect is the result of some fundamental differences
in the hair of various areas of the skin, so dapples can even be seen on black
horses. Dappling is generally most noticeable when the horses change their
hair coats in the spring and fall, but is present throughout the year on silver
dapples and many greys."

I couldn't immediately find a picture of a dappled chestnut in his book
though...maybe they don't occur so often on chestnuts...?

Wanda - does Kria have any black hair mixed in? Smutty (sooty) palominos have
some black hairs mixed in - the Sponenberg books says some can be as dark as
some chestnuts. I think those may be what are called chocolate palominos?

I bring up the smutty thing (maybe I should say sooty, since smutty sounds like
a dig at her morals!) because Tifa appears to have it - she's Kria's
granddaughter. Saga (Kria's daughter) doesn't seem to, not obviously, and I
can't see anything like that in Melnir - I don't have a clue about the
heritability of the sooty effect.

Yes, but you have to first know that the horse is indeed chestnut. A lot of
silver dapple bays have been mistakenly registered as chestnut, so what you
just said isn't enough really to go on.

Wanda, do you see any traces of dark coloring around her lower legs, where the
black points would be on a bay?

The other color that comes to my mind is palomino - Sina shows strong dappling
as do a lot of palominos I know, and palominos are chestnut with cream. Kria
is such a light sorrel - I wonder if she could actually be a dark palomino?
That's another color distinction that can be hard to see.

Can anyone else get any pictures of dappling on a known chestnut horse? A good
many of my horses show dapples, but oddly, none of my chestnuts do. I'd never
thought about that until Wanda brought it up.

Any horse can have dapples.

The silver (dapple) gene doesn't really have anything to do with the
dapples. The silver (dapple) gene changes *black* mane and tail hair to a
silver color. Silver dapple horses just often have dappling.

A chestnut horse does not have any black mane or tail hair for the silver
gene to have an effect on. So a chestnut horse can carry the silver gene but
it will have no effect on their visual color.
