[IceHorses] Quote
We patronize them for their incompleteness, for their tragic fate for having taken form so far below ourselves. And therein do we err. For the animal shall not be measured by man. In a world older and more complete than ours, they move finished and complete, gifted with the extension of the senses we have lost or never attained, living by voices we shall never hear. They are not brethren, they are not underlings: they are other nations, caught with ourselves in the net of life and time, fellow prisoners of the splendour and travail of the earth. ~Henry Beston __ Judy http://iceryder.net http://clickryder.com

What are the least of you---, gotta be animals, horses, children, poor people, unattractive people, scum of the earth people. lepers. people who smell bad. My horse Stonewall, he is the most human of all my animals, raised by humans when his mom died. His body and posture will actually contort to one of abject misery and pain, he doesnt just hang his head, he makes his legs take on a weak position as if he is gonna fold in on himself, head hanging, not an oh poor me posture but a posture of i want to die, I want to be already dead', and he does this if I dont notice him two days in a row, if I dont pay attention to him in any way, he starts withering. Ok, I didn't write the quote down exactly, but while watching the Parelli Safe Ride video, Pat said something I liked. He said what he hoped to do with his program is help people find the fascination with whole subject of horse behavior, because when you find the fascination, you lose the frustration. Man, is that ever true... I spent too much time in my early days with horses being frustrated, and I never thought then that I'd find working with young horses and rehabs/rescues/project horses so fascinating. Now, I have almost gotten to the point where I enjoy working with the problem horses as rewarding as riding - maybe more rewarding. Karen Thomas, NC No virus found in this outgoing message. Our Traveller, my husbands horse, i bet if you added up his hours training it would be less than 20 and he has been under saddle almost 4 years. He hadnt been ridden in almost 6 months and my husband insisted on riding him in the two block xmas parade yesterday morning. I honestly thought he'd be killed but he wouldnt hear of riding any other horse. At one point in the parade I looked at Tivar's eyes as he looked at the crowds lining the route, at the thickest part near the grandstands with the radio station announcer blaring. Tivars eye was hard, a look that was almost bitter, like I dont like this, like he has had a bad experience in a crowd situation, maybe a horse show, some arena thing maybe. He was well behaved but his eye told me he was very very hardened and wary, not spooky, almost angry. then i looked at Traveller, altho he WAS a little spooky, and would jump when there was a loud sudden backfiring of the shriners toy cars etc, he would look at the crowd with just open obvious wonderment, just so soft in the eye and curious. He is a horse that has known NO professional formal training and my husband since day one, age 10 months has treated him like a beloved special special child. you cant take the horse out of him, hes green and young and will spook but at his core he is like a baby duck, just going through life like it is a beautiful journey. I wish every horse could know that! Janice -- yipie tie yie yo

[IceHorses] Quote for Today
I don't really know if this is my job, I'm going to run out soon, but I like this, sort of a quote, a poem really: http://www.rayhunt.com/horse.htm Heart I talked to a friend just the other day who's got lots of opinions and plenty to say. We discussed what we both like to see in a horse His requirements and mine were different of course He likes a clean throatlatch and a long skinny neck, and prefers that their hocks are set close to the deck. Short backs and hard feet and clean slopin' shoulder, and a gaskin that looks like it swallered a boulder. He likes a short face and a big ol'soft eye, and says these are the horses he's likely to buy. And when he'd completed his lengthy discourse, on all of the attributes of the quality horse. He asked my opinion, and where do I start? And I said that I .just want horses with heart. I said I want heart above all the other. I don't care if he's Smart Little Lena's full brother. Or just how much money that his grandmother won, or whether he's roan, palomino or dun. But give me a horse with some grit and some try, and some heart and some guts and that's one that I'll buy. And I've found it's the same with a woman or man . the good ones won't quit you when the shit hits the fan by Monte Baker
