If I do get one (Janice will have to take me to the local stables to look
around; I kinda am drawn to the striped fuzzy ones), mine will be barefoot :-).

What is this with all the bugs, the size of pre-schoolers?

Why do you have to have a pony to ride? Why not a Florida Bug?

oh man, wouldnt THAT be a train wreck! We have these GIANT spiders on
the trail here. We call them banana spiders. They are like five or
six inches in diameter if you want to count legs and all. I just
happen to not be afraid of them. Not phobic at least. I dont want
them running up my neck or anything but they dont bite. But I have
had them run up my horse's neck toward me and just swiped it off with
my hand. If it had been a roach I would have started screeching and
doing the watusi and flailing around like some kinda throes of
something and my horse might misconstrue that in some way and perhaps
bolt.

It was a gorgeous day! This is definitely a beautiful time of year and
the Biltmore is a lovely place to ride.

FWIW, there are several distinct climate zones within the South.
http://tinyurl.com/22ns23 Anneliese is in the Upper South in KY. The
mountains of NC are in the Middle south - probably considered Upper South in
some areas, although at certain elevations, the climate is almost New
England-ish. I'm on the border of the Middle and Lower South, while Janice
is on the border of the Lower and Coastal South. Miami is tropical - a
whole 'nuther ball of wax. Since I met Janice, I've watched her weather
forecasts from time to time, and often, her weather is not dramatically
different from ours, but her terrain and soil is quite different.

A, come on Judy, you braved the Jungles of Hawaii...and let me
tell you about living with bugs in an open air Cabin. Thank god I
have horse paddocks around me, yes, horse paddocks have zero bugs
compared to the jungle that surrounds us..

We have chickens, I love chickens...they eat bugs so I do not have
put up screens around my lanai and ruin my view.

But Hawaii does not have anything that kills you...no snakes or
deadly spiderswe have the dreaded centipide, and on the other
side, small little sorpions...thats about it, of course misquitos,
that goes without saying.

Now Australia they got Bugs and stuff.yuck!

Palmetto bugs (really big flying cockroaches) live in the trees and
in nests in the ground -- I spent my high school years near Miami and
saw lots and lots and of them. But they are all over the south --
I've seen then several times while staying in the Dallas area. They
are creepy, but not particularly noisy.

Or it could have been a land crab (http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/UW013) --
the little ones can climb walls, and their footsteps are definitely
audible.
