I think if you clip him right away the hair will be grown back enough before it gets really cold to be a problem. I'd just clip a thin strip on each side of the neck along the jugular. Cheryl Sand Creek Icelandics Icelandic Horses & Icelandic Sheepdogs website: www.toltallyice.com
RE: [IceHorses] Partial blanketing?
But winter's here get down in the teens, and he would be cold. I was thinking those Sleezy shoulder guards might help those clipped areas stay warm. While they are not heavy blankets, do you think it would suffice for those cold winter nights on his clipped areas? Do you sew at all, or know anyone who does? I wonder if you could get one of those, and if it's not enough, use it as a pattern to make one out of polar fleece? Just a thought. Are you handy, Susan? I'll bet you could make that. I couldn't of course, but we somehow spawned this daughter who can do anything. Nancy
Re: [IceHorses] Partial blanketing?
How about something like this: http://cgi.ebay.com/Roayl-Blue-Polar-Fleece-Horse-Hood-medium_W0QQitemZ330179742857QQihZ014QQcategoryZ47265QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem It's a polar fleece hood, and would cover the neck and chest area - the areas that would be clipped. Here is the description. I think it is simular to the blanket liner. Description: From the original Weatherbeeta. Great to use after exercise or bath, the High Tech Wicking Fleece draws sweat and moisture away from your horse then the Lightweight Mesh Overlay enhances rapid evaporation- leaving your horse dry and comfortable. Youll be amazed at how fast he cools down and dries after bath or workout! Also- use for blanket or sheet liner to enhance breathablilty. Re: [IceHorses] Partial blanketing?
I know a cool thing Susan! You know here it doesnt get bitter cold so often. But on times when it is a really cool day and we go on a ride and the horse is damp with sweat for the trailer ride home etc--- Jeffers and other places sell a thig called "blanket liner" and it is a thin fleece slip over the head thing thats only like 29 bucks and I swear I have used that thing to death. On bitter cold rainy nights I had fox in a blanket that was too small for him and left a large area exposed cause I had to use his huge coat on big skin and bones Gallant boy, so I would put the blanket liner under it. Also Gallant boy was so thin I would put the blanket liner on him on cool nites when it really wasnt cold enough for a blanket but he was so thin and had old bones. anyway. i really use the heck outa my blanket liner! Only thing is is doesnt come in a wide range of sizes like a blanket. I think only sm med and large. I think an icey would take a small and after a while the neck stretches out but you could cut the bottom with scissors if it hangs too long. Janice-- yipie tie yie yo
Re: [IceHorses] Partial blanketing?
Susan, if you're worried about him being cold, but want to give him a 'vent' just clip a strip on the underside of his neck. If you just clip there you shouldn't need to blanket him at all. Then just throw a cooler on him for an hour or two after your ride. Does he have a place to get out of the wind? We have two equines here that can get a chill if they get too wet and haven't had a chance to dry off like right now, when it's half raining and half snowing. I'll have to go check the little one and the old one shortly. If they are shivering at all they go in the barn for the night. Wanda

--- Raven <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > A sleazy would not keep him warmer...it's just lycra. Why not throw a water resistant light blanket or sheet on him?<< Well, because the blanket would cover the areas mostly that don't need a blanket. I always understood that the fuzzy, fluffy hair is what keeps a horse warm, and if I put a blanket over him, it will "un-fluff" him and actually make him cold, even with a blanket on. Plus, unless I got a neck rug, his neck would still be exposed. I guess I'll just leave him hairy and ride him first and let him stand around in his cooler until he is dry.
