I have a jacket that I rarely use. We purchased a bug zapper and that
appears to look after the black flies after a few days...

Must look into one of those...but what about riding away from the zapper area?

Do you have wet areas that you ride through? They hatch in water.

Virginia,
Take heart! Once the dragonflies and bats (you might
want to put up somebat houses around the edges of the
fields to encourage them and keep them out of the
run-in)come out the black flies will drop back to a
dull roar so that daytime walks will be possible.

Evening is the worst time to go out but late night is
better(they swarm but don't bite). In a week or two
it won't be as bad during the day.

Clean up any places where the bugs can hide(old
leaves, they LOVE cedar trees, brush piles) around
where you like to walk. And you might look into
getting some mosquito dunks for any standing water
(like your pond) to minimize that pest. Its not a
chemical but a mosquito larva inhibitor.

Spring is so wonderful when its too cool for the
bugs...black flies don't bite if it gets below 50
degrees. They prefer dark colors, too, so wear light
colors.

Don't forget to check your horses midline underneath
everyday, cuz black flies prefer them to us!

I use that first Outdoor Research Bug Bucket hat in the garden, but I
don't know if it would fit over a riding helmet.

Thank you--that's good to know.

I didn't know that. I remember reading somewhere that mosquitos like
dark colors too, if I remember correctly.

Thanks for the links.

This afternoon I had to drive my daughter to a birthday party so while
I was out I dropped into Canadian Tire and went to their
fishing/camping section. I found a head net that will go over my
helmet and/or any hat I choose to wear, and it was only $3.99 so I
bought one for hubby too. We'll be fashion statements! Wonder if
I'll scare my horses!

I don't blame you about the chemicals. On yesterday's
ride, the mosquitoes and gnats were so bad, I
sprayed myself 1/2 way thru the ride (I carry a travel
spray of fly spray in my fanny pack) then 15 minutes
later, I applied deet. Then, 15 minutes after that,
my lips were numb! I think I applied too much! I had
so much deet on, my face was white! Luckily, mosquito
season in the desert only last 4-6 weeks!

Yuck! That's not good!

I'm hoping I'll be able to find that netting that I can wear with a
hat or put over my helmet.

Amber Applegate on the gaited endurance list has a wonderful
herbal/Skin-so-Soft concoction. I lose the recipe annually, but she'd
probably post it again if someone would ask.

If anyone has a link, I'm interested, too! I hate
gnats in my ears and they also get in my eyelashes! I
look like a geek as it is when I ride in my outlandish
outfits, I might as well add some netting to the mix!

Is this for horses and people? The stuff that kept
the bees off you last year?

Yes. She uses it for the horses and it did keep the bees off Hunter (and
me) last year at Headwaters. If I remember correctly, there's not a thing
in it that would prevent using it on people. I had it taped to my computer
tower all winter but I guess I tidied up and moved it.
